ATMEGA329P-20ANR Présentation
An 8-bit AVR microcontroller (AVR MCU) is a RISC-based Harvard-architecture CMOS device optimised for deterministic single-cycle instruction execution. The ATMEGA329P belongs to the megaAVR family and sits inside the broader 8-bit microcontroller -> microcontroller IC -> integrated circuit hierarchy. The picoPower technology used in this family allows active and sleep current to drop dramatically, making the part suitable for line-powered or battery-backed industrial designs that must wake on interrupt.
Key features include 32 KB Flash with read-while-write capability, 1 KB EEPROM with 100k erase/write endurance, 2 KB SRAM, JTAG debug interface, two 8-bit timer/counters, one 16-bit timer/counter, 8-channel 10-bit ADC, programmable USART, master/slave SPI, TWI (I2C-compatible), internal calibrated RC oscillator, and six software-selectable power-saving modes. The part operates from 1.8 V to 5.5 V across -40 C to +105 C industrial temperature.
The architecture combines an advanced RISC core (131 instructions, most single-cycle) with a non-volatile memory subsystem and event system peripherals. The 64-pin TQFP provides enough I/O for human-machine interfaces, LCD control and parallel bus peripherals, while the 32 KB Flash is sufficient for USB HID class stacks, Modbus RTU slaves and graphical LCD drivers.
Typical applications include industrial control panels, white goods and HVAC user interfaces, metering and sensor front-ends, battery-powered data loggers, USB HID peripherals and small graphics LCD controllers. The wide 1.8-5.5 V supply range allows direct connection to a single Li-ion cell or a regulated 3.3 V / 5 V rail.
When designing with this device, allocate the ICSP/SPD signals on dedicated PCB test points so production programmers can reach the chip without removing surrounding passives. Decouple VCC with a 100 nF ceramic close to each power pin and add a bulk 10 uF at the supply input.

Applications typiques
ATMEGA329P-20ANR convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Control Panels, White Goods and HVAC User Interfaces, Battery-Powered Data Loggers, USB HID Peripherals, Smart Metering Front-Ends, Small Graphics LCD Controllers.
Industrial Control Panels
The ATMEGA329P-20ANR fits industrial control panels thanks to its 54 GPIO, 8-channel 10-bit ADC and 32 KB Flash. The MCU directly drives keypads, LED indicators, relays and segmented displays while sampling analog signals such as temperature, pressure or 4-20 mA sensors. Its 20 MHz clock gives enough headroom for Modbus RTU slaves and PID loops, and the -40 C to +105 C temperature rating supports factory-floor enclosures. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA329-16AU for lower-speed designs, ATMEGA329A-MUR for non-picoPower variants.
Recommandé
White Goods and HVAC User Interfaces
In washing machines, dishwashers, refrigerators and HVAC thermostats, the ATMEGA329P-20ANR handles user I/O, sensor scanning and small graphic LCD or TFT panels. Its 2 KB SRAM holds touch/keypad buffers, 1 KB EEPROM stores user preferences, and the USART links to a wireless module or main controller. picoPower sleep modes let the appliance idle under 1 uA when idle, critical for ENERGY STAR ratings. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA328P-MU for Bluetooth/Wi-Fi gateway co-MCUs, ATMEGA328PB-AU for richer peripheral set.
Recommandé
Battery-Powered Data Loggers
The ATMEGA329P-20ANR excels in portable data loggers where low-power sleep, 1 KB EEPROM, and 20 MHz CPU bursts matter. The MCU wakes on RTC or external interrupt, samples sensors via the ADC, compresses data into RAM, then writes batches into EEPROM or external SPI Flash before returning to sleep. With picoPower idle modes, typical quiescent draw is under 1 uA, allowing years of operation from a single CR2032 cell. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA325A-MU for 16 KB Flash cost-down variant, ATMEGA325P-20MU for industrial temperature grade.
Recommandé
USB HID Peripherals
Using the on-chip USART and external USB-serial bridges, the ATMEGA329P-20ANR implements USB HID devices such as barcode scanners, custom keypads, or test instruments. 32 KB Flash holds USB stacks (LUFA/Atmel USB) and application logic, 2 KB SRAM supports HID reports, and JTAG simplifies firmware development. The wide 1.8-5.5 V supply enables single Li-ion or USB-bus powered designs. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA328PB-MU for native USB variant, ATMEGA328P-PU for DIP-package development board.
Recommandé
Smart Metering Front-Ends
In electricity, gas or water meter designs, the ATMEGA329P-20ANR samples current/voltage sensors through its 10-bit ADC, performs RMS and power calculations, drives the metrology front-end, and exposes data via USART/SPI/TWI to a wireless modem. The 32 KB Flash holds DLMS/COSEM or Modbus stacks, the 1 KB EEPROM stores calibration coefficients, and the 105 C temperature rating suits outdoor meter enclosures. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA329-16AUR for low-cost meter variants, ATMEGA325P-20AUR for smaller-code meter firmware.
Recommandé
Small Graphics LCD Controllers
With 32 KB Flash and 2 KB SRAM, the ATMEGA329P-20ANR can drive small graphical LCDs (128x64 monochrome or 320x240 colour via external controller) and render icons, fonts and animations. The 54 GPIO are sufficient to interface parallel LCDs, SPI/TWI for smaller OLED/TFT displays, and ADC channels for resistive touch sensing. Its 20 MHz core handles refresh, font lookup and UI state without DMA. Recommended companion MPNs: ATMEGA3290V-8AUR for high-voltage LCD drivers, ATMEGA3290PA-AU for picoPower LCD controllers.

Notes de conception
Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each ATMEGA329P-20ANR VCC pin (pins 1, 6, 63) and one to AVCC (pin 16), plus a single 10 uF bulk capacitor at the supply entry point. This arrangement meets the AVR's transient-current demands when the CPU wakes from sleep and peripherals start simultaneously, and keeps digital switching noise from corrupting ADC readings on AVCC.
Route the JTAG signals (TDI, TDO, TMS, TCK on pins 59-62) with short, parallel traces kept clear of switching lines and routed with a continuous ground reference. Keep the crystal traces (XTAL1/2) short and symmetric, surrounded by a ground pour and isolated from noisy signals like PWM outputs or relay drivers. Use a 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane to minimise EMI and ensure JTAG debug stability.
Do not leave the RESET pin (pin 5) floating. Tie it to VCC through a 10 kohm pull-up and add a 100 nF capacitor to ground for noise filtering. Leaving RESET floating makes the MCU vulnerable to spurious resets from capacitive coupling. Also remember to disable the JTAG fuse if you repurpose pins 59-62 as GPIO, since enabling JTAG takes over those pins even when no debugger is attached.
The ATMEGA329P-20ANR is rated up to +105 C junction temperature. In enclosed industrial enclosures with limited airflow, estimate: Pdiss = VCC x ICC_active, where ICC_active is approximately 10 mA at 20 MHz with all peripherals on. From VCC=5 V this yields 50 mW per device, well within the TQFP-64 theta_JA of around 50 C/W, giving a junction rise of only 2.5 C above ambient. No heatsink is required.
