ATSAME70N20A-AN Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (SRAM), and a rich set of peripherals such as timers, ADCs, communication interfaces, and GPIO into one package. The Cortex-M7 architecture sits at the top of the ARM Cortex-M family hierarchy (Cortex-M0 -> M3 -> M4 -> M7) and is the highest-performance tier targeting deterministic real-time DSP and floating-point workloads. The ATSAME70N20A-AN therefore spans the use cases previously reserved for separate DSP or external-FPGA coprocessors while remaining a microcontroller-class device with deterministic interrupt response.
Key features include a 16-bit stereo interface, high-speed USB Host/Device with on-chip HS PHY, two CAN-FD controllers, Ethernet MAC with 1588 PTP support, an image sensor interface, an 8/12-bit Parallel Capture, and a 12-bit 2 MSPS ADC. Cryptographic accelerators (AES-256, SHA, TRNG) and secure-boot with on-chip OTP fuse make the part suitable for connected industrial and IoT security deployments. The integrated High-Speed USB PHY eliminates external transceivers, reducing BOM and PCB area for USB-equipped designs.
The device supports 1.8 V, 2.5 V, and 3.3 V I/O domains, simplifying connection to mixed-voltage sensors, FPGAs, and external memory. A 16-channel Event System, 24-bit timers, and a Quad-SPI interface with XIP (execute-in-place) enable deterministic real-time response and easy expansion of code storage beyond the on-chip 1 MB Flash. Operating temperature spans -40 C to +105 C for industrial environments.
Typical applications include industrial motor control (FOC and PFC), graphical HMI, audio DSP, automotive body and gateway ECUs, smart-energy metering, and connected IoT edge nodes with Ethernet or USB connectivity. The combination of 300 MHz Cortex-M7, FPU, and DSP extensions delivers DSP-class signal-processing throughput on a single MCU.
When designing with this device, plan for an LQFP-100 footprint with a central thermal pad, route the 16-bit data bus and SDRAM signals with controlled impedance, and place decoupling capacitors within 2 mm of every supply pin. Refer to the SAME70 family datasheet for SDRAM timing and the recommended USB and Ethernet magnetics layout.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at 300 MHz with all peripherals active, core current is approximately 150 mA from VDDCORE plus 30 mA distributed across VDDIO banks. Use a 3.3 V LDO with at least 500 mA headroom and place 100 nF + 4.7 uF decoupling within 2 mm of every VDDIO/VDDCORE pin. Add a ferrite bead between analog and digital VDDIO if the 12-bit ADC is in use.
Route the 16-bit EBI bus to external SDRAM with controlled impedance (50 ohm single-ended) and length-match within 50 mils. Keep SDRAM traces short, use 22 ohm series damping, and place a ground guard ring around the clock pair to maintain signal integrity at 100 MHz SDRAM clock. The QSPI traces to boot flash should also be length-matched within 10 mil.
The LQFP-100 thermal pad is not present, so thermal dissipation relies entirely on the lead frame. For high ambient temperature (>85 C) designs running sustained Cortex-M7 at 300 MHz, ensure PCB copper area of at least 4 square inches around the device. Failure to disable unused peripherals in software increases VDDIO draw by up to 30 mA.
USB 2.0 High-Speed requires 90 ohm differential impedance on the DP/DN pair. Route DP/DN with continuous reference plane on layer 2, no splits or via stubs, and place the ESD protection diode within 3 mm of the connector. Per USB-IF compliance, keep the total DP/DN length under 50 mm for the on-chip HS PHY.
