ATSAME70N21A-AN Présentation
A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, memory, and programmable peripherals on a single silicon die. The ATSAME70N21A-AN belongs to the broader category of embedded microcontrollers (sub-class: 32-bit ARM Cortex-M7 MCUs), which sit within embedded processors > semiconductors > integrated circuits. ARM Cortex-M7 cores are specifically designed for deterministic microcontrollers with high computational throughput, DSP extensions, and tight interrupt latency, differentiating them from Cortex-M4 (which lacks the M7's dual-issue pipeline and TCM interfaces) and Cortex-A application processors (which target Linux-capable application processing). The SAM E70 series from Microchip/Atmel targets industrial connectivity, motor control, audio processing, and graphical HMI applications where designers need DSP-class math, fast context switching, and Ethernet/USB connectivity.
Key specifications include a maximum CPU clock of 300 MHz with a double-precision FPU, IEEE 754-compliant single-precision FPU, 16 KB I-cache and 16 KB D-cache, and tightly-coupled memory (TCM) interfaces for low-latency deterministic code execution. The integrated 2 MB dual-bank Flash supports in-application programming, while 384 KB SRAM supports high-bandwidth DSP and graphics frame buffers. Communication peripherals include a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC with 1588 PTP support, USB 2.0 Full-Speed + Hi-Speed with on-chip PHY, CAN-FD, and multiple USART/SPI/TWI/I2S blocks.
The ATSAME70N21A-AN is built on a low-leakage process and operates from a 1.62 V to 3.6 V supply range, with separate VDDIO and VDDCORE rails allowing flexible I/O voltage scaling. Internal 8/16/32-bit timers, a 12-bit ADC up to 1.5 Msps, and a hardware crypto accelerator via the same AES engine are integrated for motor-control and secure-boot use cases. The architecture is supported by the SAME70 Xplained Pro board and Atmel Studio/Microchip Studio, plus the MPLAB Harmony 3 software framework for RTOS, USB stacks, and middleware integration.
Typical applications include industrial motor drives (FOC for PMSM/BLDC), factory automation PLCs, automotive telematics (non-AEC-Q100 variants), medical instrumentation, audio processing via I2S, and graphical HMI displays. The integrated Ethernet MAC with 1588 timestamping also makes it well-suited for industrial IoT gateways and synchronized sensor networks.

Applications typiques
ATSAME70N21A-AN convient pour 6 applications: Industrial PMSM/BLDC Motor Control, Industrial IoT Gateways with 1588 PTP Synchronization, Audio and DSP Processing, Graphical HMI Displays, USB-Connected Test and Measurement, Medical Instrumentation.
Industrial PMSM/BLDC Motor Control
The ATSAME70N21A-AN's Cortex-M7 running at 300 MHz with single-precision FPU executes field-oriented control (FOC) loops on PMSM and BLDC motors at typical PWM frequencies of 12-20 kHz, leaving more than 60% of CPU margin for trajectory planning and current observers. The 384 KB SRAM on the SAME70 absorbs the entire motor-control firmware stack plus encoder buffers and space-vector modulation tables without external memory; the dual-bank 2 MB Flash supports field firmware updates over CAN-FD without halting the drive.
Recommandé
Industrial IoT Gateways with 1588 PTP Synchronization
The SAME70's hardware Ethernet MAC with IEEE 1588 PTPv2 timestamping gives the ATSAME70N21A-AN sub-microsecond time synchronization accuracy for distributed sensor and actuator networks such as EtherCAT, PROFINET, and IEEE 1588-based smart-grid monitoring. The Cortex-M7 at 300 MHz can run a minimal Linux-free TCP/IP stack or RTOS-based OPC-UA publisher natively, while 384 KB SRAM buffers MQTT publish/subscribe queues before they reach a backhaul link.
Recommandé
Audio and DSP Processing
The ATSAME70N21A-AN's Cortex-M7 DSP extensions and SIMD instructions accelerate FFT, FIR/IIR filter, and audio codec processing at sample rates up to 192 kHz, while the integrated I2S peripheral interfaces directly to external audio DACs and ADCs. With 384 KB SRAM the SAME70 can buffer several seconds of audio for voice-trigger detection, active-noise-cancelation paths, or Bluetooth audio render pipelines without an external SDRAM.
Recommandé
Graphical HMI Displays
The ATSAME70N21A-AN drives monochrome and color TFT LCD displays via its EBI interface and 2D graphics accelerator, while 2 MB Flash stores up to 32 MBit of UI assets and international fonts. The 300 MHz CPU renders LVGL/RT-Thread GUI screens at 30-60 fps without external SPI Flash, and the integrated hardware crypto engine on the SAME70 family secures over-the-air firmware updates.
Recommandé
USB-Connected Test and Measurement
The ATSAME70N21A-AN's USB 2.0 Full-Speed + Hi-Speed with on-chip PHY provides a direct host/device interface to PCs without external PHY components. The 300 MHz Cortex-M7 samples sensor data at the ADC's 1.5 Msps ceiling and streams it over USB isochronous endpoints; 384 KB SRAM buffers measurement frames before USB DMA uploads them to the host, supporting oscilloscope-class data acquisition tools.
Recommandé
Medical Instrumentation
The ATSAME70N21A-AN's deterministic Cortex-M7 execution and integrated Ethernet MAC with 1588 PTP make it suitable for connected patient-monitoring devices that need real-time DSP for ECG/EEG/PPG signal chains. With 384 KB SRAM and a hardware AES engine on the SAME70 family, the part supports encrypted EHR transmission over Ethernet while maintaining deterministic sample timing for FDA Class II medical-grade equipment.

Notes de conception
Estimated: At 300 MHz the Cortex-M7 core draws approximately 80-100 mA from VDDCORE (1.2V) under typical DSP load, which mandates a 4-layer PCB with a dedicated core plane. Use a 4.7 uF X5R ceramic plus a 100 nF decoupling cap within 5 mm of every VDDCORE pin (1, 9, 63, 95 per the datasheet pinout). The internal 1.2V LDO requires an input bypass network of 1 uF + 100 nF on VDDIN (pin 1) to suppress switching noise on the LDO output.
Route Ethernet MII/RMII traces with controlled 50-ohm impedance and length-match within 50 mil on the TX/RX differential pairs. Isolate the 50 MHz RMII reference clock on a guard band; the SAME70's integrated 1588 PTP timestamping requires a stable 25 MHz or 50 MHz crystal with +/-50 ppm tolerance (see SAME70 datasheet section Ethernet MAC). Ethernet ground return vias should be placed every 200 mil along the MII traces.
Do not configure PB12-PB13 as GPIO when using CAN0; the CAN pins are alternate functions and require the peripheral multiplexer (PMC_PCER) to be enabled before the CAN module will release the bus. Similarly, do not enable the USB transceiver before configuring PCK2/UPLL settings or the USB HS PHY will mis-enumerate; refer to section Universal Serial Bus in Atmel 11242 for the recommended sequence.
Estimated: At 300 MHz with sustained DSP workload, junction temperature on the 100-LQFP (theta-JA ~28 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board) rises about 28 C per Watt of internal power. Dissipation stays below 1.5 W on the SAME70N21A-AN under typical industrial workloads, so junction stays well within the +85 C industrial limit - no heatsink needed at room temperature but airflow or copper-pour enlargement is recommended above +70 C ambient.
