BTS5215LAUMA1 Présentation
A smart high-side switch is a type of power distribution IC that sits between the supply rail and the load, controlling current flow with an integrated MOSFET, gate drive, and protection logic. Unlike a discrete MOSFET with external protection circuitry, a smart high-side switch embeds overcurrent, overtemperature, overvoltage, and short-circuit protection directly on-chip, while also providing load-current feedback to the MCU. The BTS5215L family belongs to the classic PROFET 24 V line of intelligent power switches.
Key features include very low standby current, CMOS-compatible input logic, improved EMC behavior, fast demagnetization of inductive loads, stable operation under undervoltage conditions, and a wide operating voltage range. The two-channel design with independent status feedback enables the BTS5215LAUMA1 to drive two resistive or inductive loads (relays, solenoids, lamps) from a single IC, replacing two discrete MOSFETs and their protection networks with one footprint.
Typical applications include industrial PLC digital outputs, 24 V industrial automation I/O modules, body electronics modules, HVAC actuator drivers, and process-control valve drivers. The device targets harsh 24 V industrial environments where reverse polarity, jump-start, and load-dump transients are common.
When designing with this device, place input and output capacitors close to the IC pins and ensure the diagnostic status pin is properly pulled up; the BTS5215L provides open-drain diagnostic feedback that must be level-shifted for 5 V MCUs. The PG-DSO-12-9 package has a thermal pad that should be soldered to a sufficient copper pour to dissipate the worst-case load current heat without exceeding the junction temperature limit.

Applications typiques
BTS5215LAUMA1 convient pour 6 applications: Industrial PLC Digital Outputs, 24V Industrial Relay and Solenoid Drivers, Body Electronics Module (Automotive 24V), HVAC Actuator and Damper Drivers, Process Control Valve Drivers, Industrial Lighting and LED Driver Control.
Industrial PLC Digital Outputs
The BTS5215LAUMA1 drives 24 V industrial digital outputs on PLC modules where two independent load channels are needed per IC. Each 3.7 A channel switches solenoids, relays, or indicator lamps directly from the PLC backplane, while the integrated status feedback pin reports open-load and short-circuit faults back to the PLC MCU for diagnostics. The 8-36 V operating range covers standard 24 V industrial bus tolerances, and the fast demagnetization of inductive loads handles solenoid back-EMF without external freewheeling diodes in most cases.
Recommandé
24V Industrial Relay and Solenoid Drivers
Industrial relay coils and hydraulic solenoid valves draw 0.5-2 A typical and generate significant inductive kickback when de-energized. The BTS5215LAUMA1's 90 mΩ on-resistance per channel and 3.7 A rating handle most 24 V industrial coils with margin, while the integrated fast demagnetization circuit clamps the inductive voltage spike without requiring external freewheeling diodes. The dual-channel PG-DSO-12-9 package replaces two discrete MOSFETs plus their gate drivers and protection components, shrinking the PCB footprint for valve manifold controller boards.
Recommandé
Body Electronics Module (Automotive 24V)
Commercial vehicles and heavy trucks use 24 V body electronics modules for lighting, mirror adjustment, and HVAC damper control. The BTS5215LAUMA1 operates across 8-36 V, tolerating jump-start transients up to 36 V, while the integrated protection covers load-dump and reverse-polarity scenarios with appropriate external blocking. Each channel drives a 24 V lamp cluster or motor with 3.7 A capacity, and the status feedback enables the body control module to detect bulb-out and short-circuit faults for OBD-II compliance.
Recommandé
HVAC Actuator and Damper Drivers
Building automation HVAC systems use 24 V actuators to drive zone dampers, valve positions, and air-handling louvers. The BTS5215LAUMA1's dual-channel architecture fits two actuator outputs per IC, with 3.7 A per channel supporting larger damper motors used in commercial air handlers. The CMOS-compatible ground-referenced input interfaces directly to 3.3 V or 5 V HVAC controller MCUs without level shifting, and the status feedback pin reports actuator stall or open-circuit faults for predictive maintenance.
Recommandé
Process Control Valve Drivers
Process control systems in chemical, water treatment, and oil-and-gas plants use 24 V solenoid valves for flow control. The BTS5215LAUMA1's PG-DSO-12-9 dual-channel design fits two valve drivers per IC, with 3.7 A per channel covering most pilot-operated solenoid valves. The industrial 8-36 V operating range tolerates plant bus voltage variations, and the integrated protection prevents field-wiring faults (short to ground, short to supply) from damaging the controller board - a critical reliability feature for unattended process installations.
Recommandé
Industrial Lighting and LED Driver Control
Industrial 24 V LED machine-vision lights, status towers, and panel illumination benefit from the BTS5215LAUMA1's PWM-capable input switching up to several hundred Hz. Each channel drives an LED string or stack light segment at up to 3.7 A, and the dual-channel package supports bi-color or RGB indicator towers from a single IC. The integrated status feedback detects LED open-circuit failures, enabling predictive maintenance on production-line indicator panels before downstream operators miss critical status signals.

- Wide 8-36 V operating range tolerates 24 V industrial transients natively (vs VND5050J-E)
Notes de conception
At 3.7 A continuous per channel with 24 V supply and resistive load, each channel dissipates approximately 1.23 W (3.7 A × 3.7 A × 90 mΩ). With both channels active, total dissipation approaches 2.5 W. The PG-DSO-12-9 thermal pad MUST be soldered to at least 1 square inch (6 cm²) of 2 oz copper pour on the PCB to keep junction temperature below 150°C. Estimated: using Infineon-published θJA values for PG-DSO-12-9 on standard JEDEC 2s2p test board, expect θJA around 50-60 K/W.
Place a 100 nF ceramic decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the VBB pin (pin 4) to suppress supply transients from load-dump and jump-start events. Add a bulk electrolytic (≥10 µF) within 1 cm of the package for sustained inrush current from capacitive loads. The exposed thermal pad (pin 12 / TAB) should use multiple thermal vias (≥9 vias, 0.3 mm drill) to the internal ground plane for heat spreading.
The ST1/ST2 status pins are open-drain outputs requiring external pull-up resistors (typically 10 kΩ to MCU VCC). Do not leave the status pins floating - the absence of a pull-up prevents fault detection. Also note that the IN1/IN2 inputs are CMOS-compatible and ground-referenced, NOT 24 V level - driving them directly from a 24 V PLC output will damage the IC; use a level translator or voltage divider.
The BTS5215LAUMA1 features improved EMC behavior per the Infineon datasheet, but switching inductive loads at high di/dt still requires attention to loop area minimization. Keep the OUTx-to-load loop area as small as possible, and route the load return wire back to the GND pin of the BTS5215L rather than the chassis ground to avoid common-mode EMI coupling. For PWM dimming of LED loads, limit the switching frequency to ≤1 kHz to keep EMC within CISPR 11 industrial limits.
