EP610ILI-12 Présentation
Classic EPLDs (Erasable Programmable Logic Devices) are non-volatile programmable logic ICs that use EPROM/EEPROM cells to store the fuse map. They sit below modern CPLDs and FPGAs in the programmable logic hierarchy (PAL/GAL < Classic EPLD < MAX CPLD < FPGAs), and are intended for glue-logic, address decoding, state-machine and bus-arbiter functions where deterministic 12 ns timing and zero-config boot are required.
Key features of the EP610ILI-12 include 300 usable gates, 16 macro cells, 4 dedicated inputs, a programmable security bit for proprietary design protection, 100% generically tested TTL-compatible I/O, and in-system 100% test coverage. The 12 ns speed grade (the "-12" suffix) places it in the mid-tier of the EP610 family, which spans from -10 to -25 speed grades. The "I" indicates the industrial temperature grade and "L" denotes low-power CMOS operation.
Typical applications include TTL glue-logic replacement, address decoding for 8/16-bit microprocessors, state-machine controllers, bus arbitration, and legacy 5 V industrial control designs. Because the EP610 family is mature and now positioned as a legacy part, EP610ILI-12 is frequently specified for maintenance of existing equipment rather than new greenfield designs.
When designing with this device, program it with a Classic EPLD programmer or compatible third-party tool (e.g. Altera MAX+PLUS II legacy flow). Note that Altera's PLCC package follows JEDEC MO-047 outlines and the JEDEC EEPROM cell retention spec applies for the user-programmable fuse map.

Applications typiques
EP610ILI-12 convient pour 6 applications: TTL Glue-Logic Replacement, Address Decoding for 8/16-bit Microprocessors, State Machine Controllers, Bus Arbitration and Control, Legacy Industrial Control Replacement, Peripheral Chip-Select Generation.
TTL Glue-Logic Replacement
The EP610ILI-12 integrates multiple 7400-series TTL gates into a single 300-gate EPLD, reducing PCB area, BOM count and power consumption. Its 12 ns propagation delay matches standard 74LS logic timing, making it a drop-in upgrade for designs that have accumulated discrete glue logic. The 5 V TTL-compatible I/O removes the need for level shifting in legacy systems. Programmable security bit protects proprietary decoding patterns from reverse engineering.
Recommandé
Address Decoding for 8/16-bit Microprocessors
EP610ILI-12's 16 macro cells and 4 dedicated inputs make it well-suited for address decoding in 8-bit (8085, Z80) and 16-bit (8086, 68000) microprocessor systems. Each macro cell can implement a product term that decodes a unique address or chip-select pattern, with 12 ns tpd easily meeting wait-state-less memory and peripheral access. The 5 V Vcc is compatible with legacy CPU buses without level translation.
Recommandé
State Machine Controllers
With 16 macro cells and registered output capability, EP610ILI-12 can implement state machines with up to 16 states - covering most industrial sequencing, traffic-light, vending-machine and protocol-handshake designs. The 12 ns tpd enables deterministic state transitions up to ~83 MHz, and the programmable security bit protects proprietary FSM logic. The EPROM cell retains state definitions across power cycles without external configuration memory.
Recommandé
Bus Arbitration and Control
EP610ILI-12 supports multi-master bus arbitration in ISA, VME and proprietary backplane systems using its combinational macro cells for priority encoding and registered outputs for grant-latch logic. The 12 ns propagation delay is well within typical bus-access timing budgets. Industrial temperature grade (-40C to +85C) allows deployment in factory-floor and outdoor enclosures.
Recommandé
Legacy Industrial Control Replacement
EP610ILI-12 is widely used to replace failed or obsolete PAL/GAL devices in 1980s-1990s industrial control equipment where board rework is not feasible. The PLCC-28 socketed package allows field replacement without desoldering. The industrial temperature range and CMOS low-power operation suit 24/7 factory environments. Long-term availability from the legacy distribution channel supports maintenance of installed base through 2030+.
Recommandé
Peripheral Chip-Select Generation
The EP610ILI-12 generates clean, glitch-free chip-select signals for parallel peripherals (UARTs, FIFOs, SRAM, Flash) without external latch-and-decode trees. With 4 dedicated inputs and 16 macro cells, designers can implement up to 8 decoded chip selects with full address-strobe qualification. The 5 V TTL outputs drive peripheral enable pins directly, eliminating series resistors in most cases.

Notes de conception
When replacing a PAL/GAL with EP610ILI-12, do not assume the JEDEC fuse map is portable - the Classic EPLD architecture uses a different macro cell structure than PAL/GAL. You must recompile the design in MAX+PLUS II AHDL or schematic entry. Also note that the EP610 requires a 12.5 V Vpp during programming - this is supplied by the programmer, not the application board, so no on-board programming-voltage regulator is needed.
The EP610ILI-12 in PLCC-28 has a theta_JA of approximately 50 C/W. At typical CMOS standby currents under 5 mA and Icc active around 100 mA, self-heating is negligible (<0.5 W). No heatsink is required for normal operation. Forced-air cooling is unnecessary even in sealed industrial enclosures, but ensure ambient temperature stays within the -40C to +85C industrial limit.
Place a 0.1 uF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to the EP610ILI-12 Vcc pin (pin 28), with a 10 uF bulk tantalum or ceramic on the same 5 V rail. For socketed designs, use a quality PLCC-28 socket with retention clips to survive field replacement. Keep programming pin (if exposed in-circuit) traces short and away from switching signals to avoid accidental erase.
