EPF8452ATC100-4 Présentation
A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a class of programmable logic device (PLD) that combines the high gate density of gate arrays with the design flexibility of in-circuit reprogrammability. Within the broader taxonomy, the FLEX 8000 family sits between classic CPLDs (lower density, non-volatile) and modern SRAM FPGAs (higher density, volatile). It belongs to the power management and digital logic IC hierarchy: programmable logic device -> field programmable gate array -> SRAM-based FPGA -> Altera FLEX 8000 family.
Key features include MultiVolt I/O support for 3.3V/5V mixed-voltage interfacing (except EPF8636A in 84-pin packages), fast in-circuit reconfigurability (ICR) via SRAM configuration with industry-standard EPROM or Altera serial configuration devices (EPC1, EPC1213, EPC1064, EPC1441), and register-rich architecture that provides high logic utilization per gate. The TQFP-100 surface-mount package supports automated assembly.
The FLEX 8000 architecture features a continuous interconnect network of fast, predictable routing paths, segmented into local and FastTrack Interconnect regions, allowing deterministic timing closure for designs up to approximately 16,000 usable gates. Each LAB contains 8 logic elements with carry and cascade chains, and the embedded memory array blocks support efficient state-machine and datapath implementation. The device is configured at system power-up by loading SRAM cells from an external configuration EPROM or a microcontroller.
Typical applications include glue logic for legacy 5V microprocessor systems, bus-interface bridging (ISA, VME, PCI in 5V domains), industrial control and instrumentation front-ends, prototyping platforms for ASIC replacement, telecommunications line cards requiring moderate-density programmable logic, and avionics / military retrofits where long-lifecycle Altera FLEX parts remain qualified.
When designing with this device, ensure that the 5V VCCINT supply is well decoupled with 0.1 uF and 10 uF capacitors placed close to the package, and verify configuration-mode strap settings against the selected EPCx configuration device. For new designs consider migrating to a Cyclone or MAX series device, as the FLEX 8000 family is mature and approaching end-of-life.

Applications typiques
EPF8452ATC100-4 convient pour 6 applications: Legacy 5V Microprocessor Glue Logic, ISA / VME / PCI 5V Bus Bridge, Industrial Control Front-End, ASIC Replacement Prototyping Platform, Telecommunications Line Card Logic, Test & Measurement Front-End.
Legacy 5V Microprocessor Glue Logic
The EPF8452ATC100-4's 5V VCCINT and MultiVolt 3.3V/5V I/O make it ideal for legacy 5V Intel 386/486, 68k, VME and industrial CPU systems. With 4,000 usable gates, 336 logic elements and 42 LABs, the device absorbs address-decoding, wait-state generation and chip-select glue between a 5V CPU and 5V peripherals. The 68 user I/Os comfortably cover 16- and 32-bit address/data multiplexed buses plus control signals, removing several discrete 74LS/74F packages from the BOM and improving long-term reliability.
Recommandé
ISA / VME / PCI 5V Bus Bridge
For 5V ISA, VME and early PCI bus systems the EPF8452ATC100-4 provides bus-bridge state machines, parity logic and wait-state generators in a single 100-TQFP device. The 5V-tolerant I/O directly interfaces with 5V bus transceivers without level shifters, and the 4K usable gates are sufficient for dual-bus protocol translation. The 68 I/Os comfortably support 16-bit data plus address and control signals, and the SRAM-based architecture permits in-field firmware updates via reconfiguration from a fresh EPC image.
Recommandé
Industrial Control Front-End
Industrial PLC and process-control front-ends use the EPF8452ATC100-4 for encoder decoding, PWM generation, opto-isolated input conditioning and stepper-motor pulse trains. The device's 5V I/O directly drives 5V opto-couplers and 24V-driver stages through external transistors, while the 4K usable gates absorb multiple 74LS logic functions into one package. Commercial 0 to 70 C operation covers most indoor control cabinets, and the 100-TQFP surface-mount package supports automated assembly for volume production.
Recommandé
ASIC Replacement Prototyping Platform
The EPF8452ATC100-4 is widely used as an ASIC-emulation vehicle during pre-silicon validation, allowing engineers to drop in RTL designs and iterate at hardware speed before committing to a gate-array or cell-based ASIC. With 4K usable gates, 336 logic elements and 68 user I/Os the device emulates small to medium custom ASICs used in printer controllers, scanner front-ends and embedded peripherals. The SRAM-based in-circuit reconfigurability lets designers swap bitstreams in seconds, dramatically shortening prototype-to-production time.
Recommandé
Telecommunications Line Card Logic
Telecommunications line cards built on legacy 5V platforms use the EPF8452ATC100-4 for TDM time-slot switching, HDLC framing, alarm monitoring and framer-interface glue logic. The 68 user I/Os are sufficient for 8-bit TDM buses plus HDB3/B8ZS coding control, and the 4K usable gates absorb protocol-state machines that previously required a small ASIC. The 100-TQFP package has well-defined thermal behavior under continuous 5V operation, and the SRAM configuration supports remote firmware updates via in-system programming.
Recommandé
Test & Measurement Front-End
Bench-top test equipment and ATE pin-electronics use the EPF8452ATC100-4 to generate stimulus patterns, decode response signatures and arbitrate handshakes between the host controller and the DUT interface. The 5V MultiVolt I/O directly drives comparator and driver stages, while 4K usable gates implement pattern sequencers and result comparators. JTAG boundary-scan support simplifies board bring-up and in-system test, and 100-TQFP package availability eases assembly for medium-volume T&M product runs.

Notes de conception
The EPF8452ATC100-4 requires a clean 5V VCCINT supply and a separately decoupled VCCIO rail (3.3V or 5V). Place a 10 uF tantalum plus a 0.1 uF ceramic on each VCCINT pin and a 1 uF ceramic plus 0.1 uF on VCCIO. Estimated Icc core current at 25 MHz toggling across all 68 I/Os is approximately 60-80 mA; verify with the FLEX 8000 power estimator spreadsheet from Altera. Keep analog and digital grounds separated by a single star-point under the device to reduce ground bounce during simultaneous switching.
Route configuration pins (DCLK, DATA, nCONFIG, nSTATUS, CONF_DONE) as short traces to the EPCx configuration device and include 4.7 kohm pull-ups on nCONFIG and nSTATUS. Place the configuration EPROM within 50 mm of the FPGA to avoid signal-integrity issues. JTAG chain (TCK/TMS/TDO/TDI) should be routed with 4.7 kohm pull-ups on TCK/TMS/TDI and series 33 ohm damping resistors near the FPGA when multiple JTAG devices are chained. Use a continuous ground plane beneath the TQFP-100 footprint.
Do not confuse the EPF8452ATC100-4 (100-TQFP, 4K gates, -4 speed) with the EPF8452ALC84-4 (84-PLCC, same die but fewer user I/Os) or with larger FLEX 8000 dies like EPF8282 or EPF8636A - each has a different pinout. The MultiVolt I/O feature only supports 3.3V or 5.0V VCCIO, not 2.5V or 1.8V. Configuration must complete within the EPCx device's POR timeout; otherwise the device enters user mode with random state and may briefly drive illegal logic levels on output pins.
