PIC32MZ2048EFG144-E/PH Présentation
A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated computing system on a single chip combining a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (SRAM), peripherals, and I/O. In the broader semiconductor taxonomy, MCUs belong to the embedded processor family alongside microprocessors, DSPs, and SoCs, and within that family the PIC32MZ EF series occupies the high-performance connectivity tier targeting industrial, IoT, automotive infotainment, HMI/graphics, and motor-control segments. The EFG variant specifically adds HS USB, Ethernet MAC, and graphics interfaces without CAN or crypto engines.
Key features include 2 MB of Live-Update Flash with dual-panel architecture, 512 KB SRAM, HS USB 2.0 Host/Device/OTG, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC with MII/RMII interfaces, up to 12-bit 18 MSPS ADC, multiple UART/SPI/I2C peripherals, a parallel master port (PMP) for graphics, and an integrated FPU enabling fast single- and double-precision IEEE 754 math. The device supports a wide operating voltage range (2.3V to 3.6V core, 3.0V to 3.6V analog) suitable for battery-backed industrial designs.
Architecturally, the PIC32MZ EF family pairs the M-class MIPS core with dedicated FPU and DSP pipelines, four 64-bit accumulators for saturating and fractional arithmetic, and a high-bandwidth crossbar fabric for zero-wait-state peripheral access. Dual-panel Flash allows concurrent code execution from one panel while the other is being updated, enabling fail-safe firmware upgrades critical for industrial and IoT deployments.
Typical applications include industrial IoT gateways with Ethernet and HS USB connectivity, automotive HMI/infotainment systems with TFT-LCD graphics, motor control FOCs for BLDC/PMSM drives, secure connected home automation hubs, and high-performance medical instrument controllers. Designers select this part when deterministic floating-point math plus rich wired connectivity are required.
When designing with the PIC32MZ2048EFG144-E/PH, decouple all VDD/VBAT/AVDD rails with bulk tantalum and 0.1uF/10nF ceramics, route the high-speed USB differential pair with 90-ohm impedance, place the 12 MHz primary crystal within 5 mm of the OSC pins with guard traces, and verify DMIPS/FPU sustained throughput against your interrupt budget before final commit.
This page synthesizes distributor stock data, parametric drop-in alternatives from the PIC32MZ family, and practical design considerations that extend beyond the manufacturer datasheet, giving procurement and design engineers a faster procurement-to-prototype workflow.

Notes de conception
Decouple every VDD/VBAT/AVDD pin with a 100nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin, plus a bulk 4.7uF-10uF tantalum or ceramic capacitor near the MCU's main VDD cluster. Per Microchip's PIC32MZ EF Hardware Design Checklist, AVDD should additionally have a ferrite bead or 10-ohm resistor isolation from VDD if analog noise is a concern. The USB VBUS pin must have a 10k pull-down if unused, and the VBAT pin (RTC backup) needs its own 3V battery or supercap rail. Estimated total decoupling budget for 144-TQFP: ~30 capacitors.
The PIC32MZ2048EFG144-E/PH at 200 MHz with all peripherals active can dissipate 1.0-1.5W. The 144-TQFP package has a theta_JA around 38 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board, yielding ~50-60C junction temperature rise above ambient at full load. Estimated: at 85C ambient, Tj reaches ~135-145C - near the +125C automotive rating. For continuous full-CPU workloads in hot environments, add thermal vias under the exposed die pad (if available on the PH variant) or reduce CPU utilization. Derate peripheral clock speeds when system temperature exceeds 100C.
Route the USB D+/D- differential pair with 90-ohm differential impedance, matched length to within 150 mil, and a continuous ground reference plane beneath. Keep the 12 MHz primary crystal within 5 mm of OSC1/OSC2 with a guard trace tied to ground; long traces add parasitic capacitance and pull the oscillator off-frequency. The Ethernet MII/RMII traces to the external PHY should be length-matched within 50 mil and routed as 50-ohm single-ended impedances with ground stitching vias every 200 mil. The JTAG/TRCLK/PRD0-3 trace lines should not cross noisy power planes.
Do not assume the PIC32MZ EF shares pinout with the older PIC32MX series - it does not, despite both being 144-TQFP. The PIC32MZ EF uses different pin assignments for USB, Ethernet, and PMP. Do not enable the crypto engine on EFM/EFH variants without provisioning your firmware's key storage, or the device will fault on first access. Do not exceed 50 MHz on the 12-bit ADC or accuracy degrades beyond 10 ENOB - even though the spec sheet says 18 MSPS, that is sampling rate, not conversion throughput.
Place decoupling capacitors on the same layer as the MCU, directly between each VDD/VSS pair, with vias placed symmetrically to minimize loop inductance. Reserve a continuous ground pour under the entire IC with stitching vias every 200 mil around the periphery. Keep the analog ground (AVSS) and digital ground (VSS) planes separated and joined at a single point near the MCU to avoid ground loops that inject ADC noise.
