PIC32MZ2048EFH100-250I/GJX Présentation

The Microchip PIC32MZ2048EFH100-250I/GJX is a 32-bit MIPS MCU from the PIC32MZ EF family running at up to 252 MHz (415 DMIPS) with 2 MB Flash and 512 KB SRAM, packaged in a 100-pin TFBGA (7x7 mm). It integrates a hardware Floating Point Unit (FPU), IEEE 754-compliant single- and double-precision math, a DSP-enhanced core with four 64-bit accumulators and single-cycle MAC, plus High-Speed USB, Ethernet MAC, CAN, SQI, and 12-bit ADC.

A 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) is an integrated processor core, program memory, data memory, and a rich set of peripherals on a single silicon die. The PIC32MZ EF family extends the 32-bit MCU taxonomy to high-performance connected nodes - 32-bit MCU -> embedded microcontroller -> SoC -> semiconductor - targeting designs that demand deterministic real-time control alongside wired connectivity and graphics HMI throughput.

Key features include dual-panel Live-Update Flash for in-field firmware swap without downtime, dedicated crypto accelerators for AES/DES/SHA, a 200 MHz peripheral bus with independent DMA, and a graphics-friendly PMP/EPMP interface. The 100-pin TFBGA footprint delivers high pin density for space-constrained industrial and IoT gateways while exposing the full peripheral set.

Architecture-wise, the device pairs the MIPS Warrior M-class core with a tightly-coupled FPU and dedicated DSP instructions, enabling sensor-fusion and audio-processing workloads to run on bare metal without an RTOS. The dual Flash banks, configurable ECC, and a hardware random number generator (RNG) accelerate IEC 62443-aligned firmware deployment.

Typical applications include industrial IoT gateways, automotive HMI graphics, Ethernet-attached motor controllers, audio processing front-ends, and high-speed USB device/host peripherals. The combination of FPU throughput and 2 MB Flash makes the part suitable for protocols such as Modbus TCP, EtherCAT slave stacks, and lightweight TLS firmware where deterministic ISR latency and connected peripherals coexist.

A primary design consideration is power-supply decoupling on the 100-pin BGA: place 100 nF X7R bypass caps directly under each VDD/VSS pair on the opposite PCB layer and keep trace lengths under 5 mm to the bond-wire balls. Also budget the Live-Update Flash swap window (~250 ms typical for the full 2 MB bank) when designing brown-out recovery and watchdog sequencing.

Notes de conception

Estimated: The PIC32MZ2048EFH100-250I/GJX draws up to 350 mA active at 252 MHz from a 3.3 V rail, so a low-noise LDO such as the Microchip MCP1755S or a switching regulator with 1% tolerance is recommended upstream. Place a 10 uF bulk capacitor within 25 mm of the TFBGA's main VDD/VSS pair and add 100 nF X7R bypass caps directly under each adjacent power pin pair on the opposite PCB layer. Use a star-ground topology so that the 100 nF return paths do not share traces with high-current digital returns.

The 100-pin TFBGA (7x7 mm) requires microvia fan-out and a 4- or 6-layer PCB stack-up. Inner power planes should provide a continuous VDD reference for all power balls, with cut-outs only around analog-sensitive ADC pins (AVDD/AVSS). Avoid routing high-speed traces (USB DP/DM, Ethernet MII/RMII) over plane splits to prevent return-path discontinuity. The BGA land pattern must comply with IPC-7351 nominal-density rules; 0.4 mm ball pitch gives roughly 0.2 mm trace-and-space budget on the outer layer.

Pin multiplexing is a common pitfall on PIC32MZ EF parts: Hi-Speed USB, Ethernet RMII, and the 12-bit ADC reference inputs all compete for the same analog-capable balls. Configure PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) early in firmware and avoid reassigning pins at runtime. The dual-panel Flash Live-Update feature requires both VDDCORE and VDDPLL rails to settle within 5 ms during bank swap, so designers should hold the BOR threshold above the brown-out trip window until the swap completes. Always verify the 25 MHz primary crystal load capacitance against the on-chip gm and place the load caps within 3 mm of the XIN/XOUT balls.

Do not enable the Live-Update bank-swap without a watchdog window of at least 250 ms to cover the worst-case 2 MB erase-and-program time. Engineers upgrading from PIC32MX parts often forget to initialize the PIC32MZ's EBI/EPMP timing registers, leading to display flicker on graphics HMI panels. When migrating from the /PT TQFP variant, the BGA ball-out is not a 1:1 map to TQFP pin numbers, so the schematic symbols must be regenerated. Finally, always enable the ECC bits on the Flash configuration words; otherwise the dual-bank Live-Update does not protect against soft errors.
