TPS610981DSER Présentation
A boost converter is a DC-DC step-up topology within the broader voltage regulator family of power management ICs. It raises a lower input voltage to a higher regulated output using an inductor and synchronous switching elements. The TPS61098x family integrates this boost converter with either an LDO or a load switch, providing two output rails from one IC - a key differentiator for space-constrained battery designs.
Key features include ultra-low quiescent current of typically 300 nA, extending battery life in standby for years-long deployments. The synchronous boost delivers up to 300 mA at 3.3V from a 1.8V input with efficiency up to 95%, while the integrated LDO supplies a clean, low-noise rail for analog or RF circuitry. True load disconnect during shutdown prevents battery drain, and integrated overcurrent and overtemperature protection ensure robust operation.
Architecturally, the device uses pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) at light loads to minimize quiescent current, transitioning to PWM at heavier loads for low ripple and stable regulation. The LDO is powered from the boost output, generating a second rail with no additional magnetics. Typical applications include wireless sensor nodes, hearing aids, portable medical devices, and IoT endpoints where the 3.3V rail powers microcontrollers and RF transceivers while the LDO rail feeds analog sensors or audio codecs.
For design, select the recommended 2.2 uH inductor and place input/output capacitors close to the pins to minimize ripple and preserve the ultra-low standby current advantage.

Applications typiques
TPS610981DSER convient pour 6 applications: Wireless IoT Sensor Nodes, Hearing Aids and Wearables, Portable Medical Devices, Single-Cell Li-Ion Battery Systems, Energy Harvesting and Remote Monitoring, Portable Audio Devices.
Wireless IoT Sensor Nodes
Battery-powered IoT nodes spend most of their life in sleep, making the TPS610981's 300 nA quiescent current decisive for multi-year operation from a single coin cell or alkaline cell. The synchronous boost raises the decaying cell voltage to a stable 3.3V rail for the MCU and radio, while the integrated LDO supplies a low-noise rail for the RF transceiver or analog front end, all in a 1.5x1.5mm footprint that fits coin-cell-sized PCBs.
Recommandé
Hearing Aids and Wearables
Hearing aids and wearables demand extreme miniaturization and long battery life; the TPS610981 addresses both with its 6-WSON 1.5x1.5mm package and 300 nA standby current. Running from a single zinc-air or Li-Ion cell, the boost delivers 3.3V for the audio DSP while the integrated LDO powers low-noise analog sections such as microphone bias or codec supplies, eliminating a second regulator IC and saving board area and cost.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Devices
Portable medical monitors and diagnostic devices require clean, stable rails for analog measurement circuits even as the battery discharges. The TPS610981's boost stage maintains a firm 3.3V rail for the MCU and display, while the integrated LDO provides a low-ripple supply for sensors and signal conditioning. True load disconnect prevents battery drain in storage, and integrated overcurrent and overtemperature protection support robust, safe operation in patient-adjacent products.
Recommandé
Single-Cell Li-Ion Battery Systems
A single Li-Ion cell swings from 4.2V down toward 3V or lower, yet many 3.3V peripherals need regulation across this whole range. The TPS610981's low-input synchronous boost continues delivering a solid 3.3V rail as the cell discharges, with up to 95% efficiency at load. The integrated LDO adds a second regulated rail for analog circuitry, and the 300 nA quiescent draw minimizes standby losses between charging cycles in portable products.
Recommandé
Energy Harvesting and Remote Monitoring
Remote monitoring endpoints powered by small primary cells or harvested energy benefit from the TPS610981's ability to start and regulate from very low input voltages. The PFM control scheme keeps conversion losses negligible at microamp average loads, so a small cell can sustain a radio-plus-sensor node for years. The 3.3V boost rail runs the MCU and RF link, while the LDO rail powers the analog sensor, all within a footprint small enough for compact remote units.
Recommandé
Portable Audio Devices
In compact audio products such as recorders and portable codecs, power-supply noise directly affects the audio signal path. The TPS610981's integrated LDO filters the boost output, providing a low-noise rail for the audio codec or microphone amplifier, while the 3.3V boost rail powers the digital section from a single cell. This two-rail, one-IC approach reduces component count and keeps analog and digital supplies separated for better noise performance.

Notes de conception
In the 1.5x1.5mm WSON-6 layout, place the 2.2 uH inductor within 1 mm of the SW pin and keep the SW node copper area minimal to limit EMI. Place input ceramic capacitor directly at VIN/GND and the output capacitor at VOUT/GND with short, wide traces. Use multiple vias to the ground plane under the device thermal pad for low-impedance return and heat dissipation.
The 300 nA quiescent current benefit is lost if leaky external components are used: select ceramic capacitors with low leakage and a resistor divider-free fixed-output configuration where possible. In shutdown, true load disconnect prevents the output from back-feeding the battery, but downstream leakage paths in the load circuit can still drain the cell - audit the full BOM for standby consumption.
Do not substitute a different pinout boost converter (e.g., TPS61299, TLV61225) without PCB rework - TI explicitly marks these as same-function, different pinout. Also verify the LDO output current budget: the LDO is powered from the boost output, so total load current must stay within the converter's capability; oversizing the LDO rail load can collapse the boost rail at low battery voltage.
