TPS71501DCKR Présentation
What is an LDO (Low-Dropout) linear regulator? An LDO is a type of voltage regulator that maintains a stable output voltage even when the input voltage is only marginally above the desired output. Within the broader taxonomy, an LDO is a linear regulator, which is a subclass of voltage regulators, sitting under power management ICs in the semiconductor hierarchy. Wide-input LDOs such as the TPS71501 differ from standard LDOs by tolerating much higher VIN, making them suited for industrial 24 V rails, battery stacks up to ~20 V, and post-bridge-rectifier supplies.
Key features of the TPS71501DCKR include 3.2 uA quiescent current for battery-friendly standby, 415 mV typical dropout at 50 mA, internal current limit, and thermal shutdown protection. The SC-70-5 footprint occupies roughly 2.0 mm x 1.25 mm of board area, enabling dense designs in portable equipment. The device does not require an enable pin in the basic TPS71501 family, simplifying MCU-attached power trees.
The TPS71501 uses a PMOS-pass architecture with a precision bandgap reference. The combination of low IQ and wide VIN lets it sit directly on a high-voltage battery or bus while still drawing negligible standby current, and the absence of a minimum-load requirement (true no-load stability) avoids the dummy-resistor tricks needed by some competing parts.
Typical applications include always-on microcontroller rails in battery-powered IoT nodes, industrial 24 V sensor conditioning, post-bridge auxiliary supplies, and low-current analog references. The wide input range is especially valuable where the upstream source is a rectified mains-isolated rail.
When designing with the TPS71501, place input and output capacitors close to the IC, keep the FB resistor divider traces short, and verify worst-case dropout at minimum VIN and maximum load. For higher-current rails (>200 mA), select a different TI LDO.
This page combines manufacturer specifications, distributor stock and pricing, drop-in alternatives in the same SC-70-5 footprint, and practical design notes not consolidated in the TPS715 datasheet.

Applications typiques
TPS71501DCKR convient pour 6 applications: Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node, Industrial 24 V Sensor Conditioning, Post-Bridge Auxiliary Supply, Microcontroller Auxiliary Rail, Portable Medical Wearable, Smart Home Sensor Hub.
Battery-Powered IoT Sensor Node
The TPS71501DCKR is well matched to always-on IoT sensor nodes because its 3.2 uA quiescent current keeps standby drain on multi-year battery deployments to negligible levels, while the 2.5-24 V input range accepts 2-3 alkaline, 2-3 NiMH, single-cell Li-ion, or even modest rectified-24 V industrial rails without a pre-regulator. Its 50 mA output is sufficient to feed a low-power MCU such as MSP430 or STM32L0 plus a low-duty-cycle sensor front-end. Place a 1 uF X7R ceramic at VOUT and a 0.47 uF minimum at VIN; the no-load stability means no dummy-resistor is required. Compared with a switching pre-regulator, the TPS71501 adds no switching noise and avoids inductor EMI, critical for radio-equipped nodes. The SC-70-5 footprint keeps the analog section under 6 mm^2, preserving room for the radio and antenna.
Recommandé
Industrial 24 V Sensor Conditioning
In industrial 24 V systems, the TPS71501DCKR operates directly from the bus without a pre-regulator, thanks to its 24 V absolute-maximum input tolerance. The LDO post-regulates to a clean 3.3 V or 5 V rail for analog signal-chain ICs such as op-amps, ADCs, and 4-20 mA loop drivers. With 415 mV dropout at 50 mA, the regulator stays in regulation even when the 24 V bus sags under load transients. Add a TVS diode such as SMAJ33CA on VIN for surge protection per IEC 61000-4-5. Reverse-polarity protection via a P-FET in series with VIN prevents field-wiring damage. The wide operating temperature of -40C to +125C covers outdoor and factory-floor enclosures. Use a 1% resistor divider on FB for tight output tolerance.
Recommandé
Post-Bridge Auxiliary Supply
Following a bridge rectifier fed from a 12-0-12 or 15-0-15 transformer secondary, the TPS71501DCKR can drop the rectified 15-20 V DC to a regulated 3.3 V or 5 V logic rail. The 24 V input rating comfortably absorbs rectified 18 VAC peaks and standard transient events, eliminating the need for a switching pre-converter in cost-sensitive appliances. Internal thermal shutdown protects the SC-70-5 package when continuous 50 mA load is combined with high ambient temperature; derate to 25-30 mA above 85C ambient, or use a 50 mm^2 copper pour as a heatsink. The low 3.2 uA IQ also means standby losses on unplugged mains-isolated appliances remain negligible, easing Energy Star compliance.
Recommandé
Microcontroller Auxiliary Rail
Many low-power MCUs require a quiet 1.8 V or 3.3 V analog AVCC rail separate from the noisy digital VDD. The TPS71501DCKR is ideal for this auxiliary rail because its lack of switching noise and 415 mV dropout maintain regulation at high MCU digital load steps. With 50 mA available, it can power MCU-internal ADCs, op-amps, and reference buffers without competing for current. Place the TPS71501 on the analog ground island with separate ferrite-bead isolation from the digital ground. A 0.47 uF X5R ceramic at VOUT plus a 1 nF 100 MHz noise-bypass cap suppresses high-frequency ripple from digital switching on the same board.
Recommandé
Portable Medical Wearable
Wearable medical devices such as pulse-oximeter patches, continuous glucose monitors, and Bluetooth thermometers benefit from the TPS71501DCKR's 3.2 uA IQ and 2.5-24 V input range when fed by a small Li-ion or coin-cell stack with USB or wireless charging. The 50 mA output powers a low-power BLE SoC plus a precision analog front-end. The SC-70-5 footprint suits the under-10 mm^2 PCB area typical of patches. Because the TPS715 does not require an enable pin, designers use the BLE SoC's GPIO to gate the load via a downstream load switch, keeping the LDO always on but minimizing total quiescent. Note: this part is not AEC-Q100; for automotive-grade applications, use TPS71501MDCKREP instead.
Recommandé
Smart Home Sensor Hub
Smart-home sensor hubs, including Zigbee/Z-Wave/Wi-Fi door/window sensors and PIR motion detectors, run on coin cells or 2x AAA cells that can sag to 2.0 V at end-of-life. The TPS71501DCKR's 2.5 V minimum input and 415 mV dropout allow operation down to ~2.9 V on VOUT when supplying a 2.5 V MCU rail, extending usable battery life by 15-30% over competing LDOs with higher minimum VIN. The SC-70-5 package fits inside the cramped battery compartment of door/window sensors. Low quiescent current (3.2 uA) means the regulator itself consumes < 0.1% of the typical 50 mAh coin-cell capacity per year, leaving nearly all energy for radio transmissions. A 1 uF ceramic on VOUT is sufficient for stability.

Notes de conception
Place a 1 uF X5R/X7R ceramic input capacitor as close as possible to the IN pin (within 2-3 mm) and a 0.47-1 uF X5R ceramic on VOUT within 1-2 mm of the OUT pin. The TPS71501DCKR is stable with any capacitor >= 0.47 uF including low-ESR ceramics, but long traces add parasitic inductance that can cause instability at high load steps. A small ground pour directly under the SC-70-5 package reduces thermal resistance and improves dropout behavior under sustained load.
Estimated: at VIN = 12 V, VOUT = 3.3 V, IOUT = 50 mA, power dissipation is approximately (12 - 3.3) x 0.05 = 0.435 W. With the SC-70-5 theta_JA of roughly 250 C/W on a 1 oz 2-layer board, junction temperature rise above ambient is about 109 C, exceeding the 125 C absolute max at 25 C ambient. Either reduce VIN to 6-9 V, lower load to 25-30 mA, or add a copper-pour heatsink of >= 100 mm^2 on the SC-70-5 thermal pad (pin 4 NC) to bring theta_JA below 150 C/W.
Do not exceed 24 V on VIN (absolute maximum). Reverse-polarity events on the input can destroy the IC; add a series Schottky diode (e.g., B5819W) or P-FET reverse-protection block on VIN for field-wiring applications. On the adjustable TPS71501, the FB pin is high-impedance; route the resistor divider traces as short as possible and keep them away from switching nodes to avoid noise coupling into the regulation loop. The NC pin (pin 4) is sometimes internally bonded to the die substrate - do not connect it to anything other than a floating copper island for thermal relief.
