ATMEGA88V-10MI 概要

The Microchip Technology (Atmel) ATMEGA88V-10MI is a low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB of In-System Programmable Flash, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, and 23 general-purpose I/O lines, clocked at up to 10MHz and housed in a 32-pad VQFN (5x5 mm) exposed-pad package with industrial -40C to +85C temperature range.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals such as timers, ADCs, and serial interfaces on one die. In the power-management hierarchy of embedded systems, the MCU is the master controller that supervises sensors, actuators, and communication links, making it the central component of virtually every embedded design.

Key features include the AVR advanced RISC architecture with 131 mostly single-cycle instructions delivering up to 1 MIPS per MHz (10 MIPS at 10MHz), operation from 1.8V to 5.5V for battery-friendly designs, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, a byte-oriented Two-Wire Interface (I2C-compatible), a serial USART, and SPI. DebugWIRE on-chip debugging simplifies development with only a single-pin interface.

The ATmega88V uses a Harvard-architecture pipeline with 32 general-purpose working registers directly connected to the ALU, allowing two independent register accesses in one instruction cycle. Read-while-write Flash supports self-programming for bootloaders. Three flexible timer/counters (two 8-bit, one 16-bit) with compare and PWM modes drive motor control, lighting, and timing tasks.

Typical applications include battery-powered sensors and metering, industrial control and automation nodes, HVAC and appliance control, and consumer electronics such as remote controls and lighting. The wide 1.8-5.5V supply range and low active/Power-Down current fit energy-constrained designs.

Design consideration: place 100nF decoupling capacitors close to both VCC/GND pad pairs on the QFN exposed pad, and solder the exposed die pad to ground for thermal and signal integrity.

This page adds distributor pricing tiers, same-footprint drop-in alternatives, pinout detail, and practical design notes not consolidated in the manufacturer datasheet.

主な用途

ATMEGA88V-10MI の用途: 6 件s: Battery-Powered Sensors and Metering, Industrial Control and Automation Nodes, HVAC and Appliance Control, Consumer Remote Controls and Keyless Entry, LED Lighting and Dimmers, Prototype and Educational Embedded Systems.

🧩

Battery-Powered Sensors and Metering

The ATMEGA88V-10MI fits battery-powered sensor nodes because it operates down to 1.8V, letting designs extract the last energy from discharging cells, and its picoPower AVR core provides microamp-level Power-Down sleep current. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC digitizes analog sensors such as temperature, pressure, and light without an external converter, while the 512B EEPROM stores calibration constants that survive battery replacement. A typical topology runs the MCU in ADC-noise-reduction mode between periodic measurements, waking on Timer2 or pin-change interrupts, then transmitting results over the TWI or USART interface. At 3V and 1MHz the throughput of roughly 1 MIPS is sufficient for most metering firmware. Trade-off: the 10MHz ceiling limits heavy DSP work, so complex algorithms should use lookup tables or reduced sample rates.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation Nodes

The ATMEGA88V-10MI serves industrial control nodes with its -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade and 23 I/O lines for driving relays, reading limit switches, and interfacing HMI elements. The 16-bit Timer/Counter1 with input-capture and PWM outputs handles motor speed control and precise event timing, while the USART connects to RS-485 transceivers for multi-drop field buses and the TWI manages I/O expanders and sensors. The 8KB Flash accommodates protocol stacks and state machines typical of Modbus-RTU slave firmware, and DebugWIRE permits in-system firmware updates during commissioning. The exposed-pad QFN provides low ground inductance important in electrically noisy cabinets. Design consideration: use optocouplers or isolated transceivers on field-facing lines, and add TVS protection because the QFN pins lack the surge robustness of larger packages.

🔧

HVAC and Appliance Control

Home appliance and HVAC controllers benefit from the ATMEGA88V-10MI's combination of PWM generation, ADC monitoring, and robust industrial temperature range. Timer/Counter1 and two 8-bit timers generate multi-channel PWM for blower motor drives, heater triac phase control, and status LED dimming, while the 10-bit ADC reads NTC thermistors, user potentiometers, and supply-voltage feedback. The 512B EEPROM retains last-user settings and fault logs across power cycles. Operating from a transformer-derived 5V rail within the 1.8-5.5V range removes the need for a precision regulator, and the internal watchdog plus brown-out detector (enabled via fuse) provide the safety supervision expected in heater-controlled appliances. The 32-VQFN 5x5mm footprint keeps controller PCB area small for compact product enclosures.

📱

Consumer Remote Controls and Keyless Entry

Infrared remote controls and keyless-entry receivers are classic ATmega88 applications: the cost-sensitive design needs just enough Flash for IR encoding tables and a low sleep current for years of battery life. The ATMEGA88V-10MI runs from two AAA cells (3V, well within 1.8-5.5V), wakes from Power-Down on a key-press pin-change interrupt, and modulates the IR LED via Timer PWM at 36-40kHz carriers. The 1KB SRAM comfortably holds lookup tables and protocol buffers for NEC/RC-5 formats, and read-while-write Flash allows in-field firmware upgrades through a bootloader. For receivers, the USART or pin-change interrupts decode incoming IR streams. The V-speed grade is ideal here because 10MHz far exceeds the timing resolution needed, while the low-voltage core maximizes battery endurance.

💡

LED Lighting and Dimmers

The ATMEGA88V-10MI drives LED lighting controllers using its three timers to generate high-frequency PWM for flicker-free dimming and color mixing of RGB fixtures. The 10-bit ADC reads dimmer potentiometers, ambient-light sensors, or linearizes LED temperature via NTC monitoring, while the TWI interface connects to LED driver expanders or DMX-style front ends. Operating at 1.8-5.5V allows direct powering from 3.3V or 5V system rails without an LDO in cost-optimized lamps. The 8KB Flash holds gamma-correction tables and communication firmware for DALI-like protocols, and the EEPROM stores factory color-calibration data per fixture. Design tip: keep the ADC reference (pin 20) decoupled with 100nF and route high-dV/dt LED switch nodes away from the QFN to preserve ADC accuracy during PWM switching.

🖥️

Prototype and Educational Embedded Systems

The ATmega88 family is a staple of embedded-systems education and rapid prototyping, and the ATMEGA88V-10MI in the 32-VQFN is well suited to compact professional prototype boards. The AVR instruction set with 32 working registers is straightforward for teaching RISC concepts, Arduino-compatible bootloaders run in the 8KB Flash, and the DebugWIRE interface gives students full source-level debugging over a single wire with Atmel-ICE. The ISP Flash programming allows unlimited re-flashing in lab environments, and the 1.8-5.5V tolerance protects the chip from typical bench supply mistakes at low voltages. For QFN soldering education, the exposed-pad 5x5mm package teaches proper land-pattern and via-fanout design. Later migration to ATmega168/328 QFN parts is trivial because pinouts and toolchains remain unchanged.

What is the operating voltage range of ATMEGA88V-10MI?
The ATMEGA88V-10MI operates from a supply voltage of 1.8V to 5.5V across its full industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. According to the Atmel/Microchip ATmega48V/88V/168V datasheet, this wide range suits both single-cell LiSOCl2 coin cells (3V) and 5V logic systems, unlike the standard ATmega88 speed-grade parts which require higher minimum voltage at elevated clock rates.

What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA88V-10MI?
The best drop-in replacement for the ATMEGA88V-10MI is the ATMEGA88PV-10MUR, which uses the identical 32-VQFN (5x5mm) footprint, the same 10MHz/1.8-5.5V ratings, and the same 8KB Flash/1KB SRAM/512B EEPROM memory configuration - the P variant adds a calibrated internal RC oscillator for more accurate clocking. The ATMEGA88-20MU is another same-footprint option if your board can tolerate a 20MHz-rated core running at 10MHz.
What is the difference between ATMEGA88V-10MI and ATMEGA88V-10MU?
The ATMEGA88V-10MI is the industrial-temperature variant (-40C to +85C) of the 32-VQFN ATmega88V, while the ATMEGA88V-10MU is qualified to -40C to +105C for extended-temperature industrial and automotive-adjacent environments. Both share the same 32-VQFN footprint, 10MHz rating, 1.8-5.5V operation, and memory configuration, so they are pin-to-pin interchangeable when the extended temperature range is not required.
ATMEGA88V-10MI vs ATMEGA88V-10AUR - which should I choose?
Choose the ATMEGA88V-10MI when you need the compact 32-VQFN (5x5mm) exposed-pad package for space-constrained boards; choose the ATMEGA88V-10AUR when your PCB uses a 32-pin TQFP (7x7mm) footprint, which is easier to hand-solder and inspect. Both have identical 10MHz, 1.8-5.5V, 8KB Flash specifications and the same firmware compatibility - the difference is purely package/footprint, so they are NOT interchangeable on the same PCB.
When should I choose ATMEGA88V-10MI over ATMEGA88-20MU?
Choose the ATMEGA88V-10MI when lowest power consumption matters: the V-variant core is optimized for low-voltage operation down to 1.8V, ideal for battery products running at 3V or below. Choose the ATMEGA88-20MU when you need up to 20MHz performance or margin for future clock upgrades. Both share the same 32-VQFN footprint and pinout, so a PCB designed for either part can accept both with firmware-level consideration only.
Is the ATMEGA88V-10MI suitable for battery-powered applications?
Yes, the ATMEGA88V-10MI is specifically suited to battery-powered designs. The V-speed grade operates down to 1.8V (useful as a battery discharges), and the AVR picoPower architecture provides Power-Down mode current in the microamp range plus idle and ADC-noise-reduction sleep modes. With a 10MHz cap you trade peak throughput for lower switching losses - a good fit for meters, remote sensors, and portable instruments running on 3V coin cells or two AA cells.
Where can I download the ATMEGA88V-10MI datasheet PDF?
You can download the ATMEGA88V-10MI datasheet PDF from the official Microchip/Atmel product page (microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega88) or from aggregator sites such as alldatasheet.com, which hosts the 378-page '8-bit Microcontroller with 8K Bytes In-System Programmable Flash' document covering the ATmega48V/88V/168V family. Prefer the manufacturer's official document as the authoritative source for register descriptions and electrical characteristics.

The ATMEGA88V-10MI pinout is documented in the manufacturer datasheet under the 32-pin MLF/VQFN package pin configuration. Pin 1 is PD3, with VCC on pins 4 and 6, GND on pins 3, 5 and 21, the ADC reference (AREF) on pin 20, AVCC on pin 18, and the active-low RESET (PC6) on pin 29. The exposed die pad on the bottom connects to GND for thermal relief. The pinout diagram on this page shows all 32 pads.
Is the ATMEGA88V-10MI RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes, the ATMEGA88V-10MI is RoHS compliant and lead-free; it is supplied in a matte-tin finished VQFN package. Microchip's product status pages mark the ATmega88V series as RoHS-compliant and REACH-relevant. For exact material-declaration documents (halogen status, conflict minerals), download the certificate from the Microchip environment compliance portal for this specific ordering code, as finishes can differ between package variants.
What are the key specifications of ATMEGA88V-10MI that engineers should know?
The ATMEGA88V-10MI is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB ISP Flash (4K x 16), 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, 23 I/O lines, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, USART, SPI, and TWI (I2C) interfaces, two 8-bit and one 16-bit timer with PWM, DebugWIRE on-chip debug, 10MHz maximum clock (about 10 MIPS), 1.8V to 5.5V operation, -40C to +85C industrial range, in a 32-VQFN 5x5mm exposed-pad package. This single paragraph answers the most common qualification questions.
Is ATMEGA88V-10MI the same as ATMEGA88PV-10MUR?
No, they are not identical, but they are drop-in compatible. The ATMEGA88PV-10MUR is the P-variant of the same ATmega88V device: same 8KB Flash, 1KB SRAM, 512B EEPROM, 10MHz, 1.8-5.5V, and the same 32-VQFN 5x5mm footprint. The P version adds a factory-calibrated internal RC oscillator with tighter accuracy and phase-locked PLL features, allowing crystalless designs. Existing firmware runs unchanged; you may optionally exploit the better internal clock accuracy.
What is the best Microchip equivalent for ATMEGA88V-10MI from the ATmega88PA family?
The best Microchip same-family equivalent is the ATMEGA88PA-CCUR (or ATMEGA88PA-MU in the 32-VQFN), the picoPower refresh of the ATmega88V line. The PA variant retains the 8KB Flash/1KB SRAM/512B EEPROM, 23 I/O, and AVR core while improving power consumption, adding more accurate internal oscillators, and extending temperature capability. Note the CC package suffix denotes a smaller 4x4mm QFN on some ordering codes - confirm the exact package before layout reuse; only the MU/QFN-32 5x5 versions are footprint-identical.
How do I program and debug the ATMEGA88V-10MI?
You can program the ATMEGA88V-10MI via three methods: (1) In-System Programming using the SPI pins (MOSI/MISO/SCK) with tools such as the Microchip AVR ISP mkII or Atmel-ICE; (2) self-programming through a bootloader using the read-while-write Flash capability; (3) parallel HV programming for factory recovery. Debugging uses the DebugWIRE single-pin on-chip debug system on the RESET pin, compatible with Atmel-ICE - only a one-wire connection is needed, freeing board resources.

選定ガイド

Choose the ATMEGA88V-10MI when your design needs the smallest viable footprint with industrial temperature rating, wide 1.8-5.5V operation for battery systems, and moderate 10MHz performance. Choose the ATMEGA88PV-10MUR instead if you want to eliminate the crystal using its calibrated internal oscillator - it is pin-identical. Choose ATMEGA88-20MU when you need up to 20MHz headroom and can accept a higher minimum supply voltage. Choose the ATMEGA88V-10AUR when hand-assembly or easier inspection of a TQFP-32 (7x7mm) is more valuable than area savings. For larger firmware, the same-footprint ATMEGA168V-10MU doubles Flash and EEPROM without board changes. Avoid this family entirely under AEC-Q100 automotive requirements - the MI suffix is industrial grade only.

設計ノート

The 32-VQFN (5x5mm) exposed pad must be soldered to a ground island with an array of 3x3 thermal vias to the ground plane; the exposed pad is the primary GND connection and also removes die heat. Decouple both VCC pads (pins 4, 6) with 100nF ceramics placed within 2mm, decouple AVCC (pin 18) via a 10uH ferrite or 100-ohm resistor from VCC with a separate 100nF, and decouple AREF (pin 20) with 100nF only - never place a capacitor directly on RESET for DebugWIRE compatibility unless the fuse disables it.

In battery designs, enable the brown-out detector via fuse at a threshold below your minimum battery voltage (e.g., 1.8V BOD for a 3V cell) and use Power-Down mode with Timer2 asynchronous clocking for periodic wake. Estimated: at 3V and 1MHz active clock the core draws roughly 0.5-1mA; in Power-Down the current drops to the microamp range per the datasheet. Keep the clock prescaler active so the CPU can run at 1MHz between ADC bursts, cutting average consumption dramatically versus running 10MHz continuously.

Three recurring mistakes with this part: (1) leaving RESET floating - tie pin 29 to VCC through a 10k resistor unless DebugWIRE is used, since a floating RESET causes spurious resets; (2) forgetting the 16-bit register read order on Timer/Counter1 - always read LOW byte first per the datasheet; (3) assuming the MI suffix is automotive - it is industrial temperature (-40C to +85C), not AEC-Q100 qualified, so do not deploy it under automotive dashboards without your own qualification.

For SPI (PB3-PB5) and TWI (PC4/PC5) runs longer than about 10cm, add series 22-33 ohm resistors on SCK and SDA/SCL to soften edges and reduce ringing, and keep the crystal (if used) within 5mm of pins 7-8 with 12-22pF load capacitors depending on crystal specification. Route ADC sensor lines away from PWM outputs and add an RC anti-alias filter (e.g., 1k + 100nF, 1.6kHz corner) ahead of ADC0-ADC5 for noisy inputs.
