TMP117 概要
A digital temperature sensor is an IC that measures its own die temperature and outputs the value over a serial bus such as I2C or SMBus. Within the semiconductor hierarchy, the TMP117 belongs to the local digital temperature sensor family under temperature sensor ICs. Compared with analog solutions (thermistors, RTDs), it eliminates signal conditioning, ADCs, and calibration while improving linearity and system accuracy.
Key features include a 1.8V to 5.5V supply range (operating from 1.7V per TI datasheet SBOS961), 3.5uA typical operating current for battery-powered designs, and a 48-bit onboard EEPROM storing configuration and temperature offset calibration. Programmable high/low limit registers drive an ALERT interrupt pin, enabling autonomous over-temperature monitoring without host polling.
Technically, the TMP117 uses a bandgap-based sensing element digitized by a precision ADC. It is factory-calibrated and NIST-traceable, and supports four I2C/SMBus addresses (0x48 to 0x4B) via the ADD0 pin, so up to four devices can share one bus. Low 3.5uA consumption minimizes self-heating error, which is often the dominant accuracy limit in tiny WSON and WCSP packages. Accuracy is ±0.15°C across the extended -40°C to 125°C range.
Typical applications include medical patient thermometers, wearable health monitors, cold-chain data loggers, HVAC systems, and precision instrumentation RTD replacement. Its ±0.1°C uncalibrated accuracy outperforms most competitive digital sensors such as the DS18B20 or HDC1080.
Design tip: place the sensor thermally close to the measured source; per TI layout guidance, keep the decoupling capacitor within 5mm and I2C pull-up resistors at least 10mm away to minimize self-heating and noise. Prices as of 2026-08-30.

主な用途
TMP117 の用途: 6 件s: Medical Patient Thermometers, Wearable Health Monitors, Cold-Chain Data Loggers, RTD Replacement in Precision Instrumentation, HVAC and Building Automation, Battery Management and Power Supply Monitoring.
Medical Patient Thermometers
The TMP117 was explicitly designed to meet ASTM E1112 and ISO 80601 requirements for electronic patient thermometers. Its ±0.1°C accuracy from -20°C to +50°C with no field calibration and NIST-traceable factory calibration satisfy clinical accuracy demands directly. The TMP117M variant guarantees ±0.1°C over the 0°C to 50°C patient range. Its 3.5uA consumption extends battery life in handheld thermometers, and the EEPROM offset register supports per-device calibration for clinical audits.
おすすめ
Wearable Health Monitors
Wearables need skin-temperature accuracy with minimal self-heating and ultra-low power. The TMP117's 3.5uA typical current and 1.8V-5.5V operation fit small lithium-cell designs, while the 1.49x0.95mm WCSP-6 (YBGR) package minimizes thermal mass for fast skin-temperature response. The ALERT pin allows autonomous threshold interrupts without waking the host MCU continuously. Compared with thermistor solutions, the digital output eliminates ADC noise and calibration drift in humid, thermally noisy body-worn environments.
おすすめ
Cold-Chain Data Loggers
Cold-chain monitoring demands verified accuracy across shipping temperature extremes. The TMP117 measures -55°C to +150°C with ±0.15°C from -40°C to +125°C, covering freezer-to-ambient excursions without degradation. The 48-bit EEPROM stores logger configuration and calibration offsets locally, and the factory NIST-traceable calibration removes per-unit field calibration cost. Its 3.5uA consumption supports months-long battery logging, and I2C multi-addressing lets one logger MCU monitor up to four thermal points.
おすすめ
RTD Replacement in Precision Instrumentation
For non-medical precision sensing, the TMP117 replaces PT100/PT1000 platinum RTDs as a single-chip digital solution. A classic RTD chain requires an excitation current source, instrumentation amplifier, precision ADC, and ratiometric calibration; the TMP117 achieves ±0.1°C accuracy with only I2C wiring, cutting BOM cost and board area. Its digital output is immune to lead-wire resistance errors that plague 2-wire and 3-wire RTD installations, and long-term stability benefits from the EEPROM offset-compensation register.
おすすめ
HVAC and Building Automation
HVAC thermostats and zone controllers benefit from the TMP117's ±0.1°C room-temperature accuracy, which directly improves comfort-band control and energy efficiency. Four selectable I2C addresses (0x48-0x4B) allow multiple sensors on a single two-wire bus run, simplifying multi-zone boards. The programmable ALERT thresholds enable autonomous over-temperature protection of equipment (fans, dampers) without continuous host polling, and the 5.5V maximum supply tolerates common 5V logic rails in building controllers.
おすすめ
Battery Management and Power Supply Monitoring
Battery packs and power supplies need temperature monitoring for charging safety and derating. The TMP117 monitors -55°C to +150°C, covering lithium-cell charge/discharge windows and hot-spot tracking near power stages. Its 1.8V-5.5V supply and 3.5uA draw integrate easily into battery-monitor front ends, while the ALERT pin provides hardware-level over-temperature interrupt to the pack controller independent of firmware polling. The digital I2C output avoids ADC channel loading in multi-cell gauging architectures.

設計ノート
Per TI layout guidance (datasheet SBOS961 and TI E2E forum), place the decoupling capacitor within 5mm of the VDD pin and keep I2C pull-up resistors at least 10mm away from the sensor. Pull-up traces carry current that self-heats the tiny 2x2mm package; even milliwatts can bias readings above the ±0.1°C target.
Self-heating is the dominant accuracy limit. The 3.5uA operating current produces negligible dissipation, but the ALERT pin sinking external loads or long copper traces to the thermal source will bias measurements. Thermally isolate the sensor from hot components and, for skin measurements, choose the WCSP-6 (YBGR) variant for lower thermal mass and faster response.
Do not omit the EEPROM configuration write in firmware: reset defaults may not match your averaging/alert settings. Use 1% or better I2C pull-ups sized for bus capacitance at 400kHz. When substituting TMP118 for TMP117 to cut cost, verify register map and EEPROM behavior differences first - some offset-calibration workflows are not identical.
