MPC8272VRMIBA
MPC8272VRMIBA - PowerQUICC II 266MHz MPU | NXP Semiconductors
The NXP MPC8272VRMIBA is a PowerQUICC II family microprocessor built on Power Architecture technology, operating at 266 MHz and delivering 505.4 MIPS of performance. It integrates a 32-bit PowerPC G2_LE core with the CPM (Communications Processor Module) co-processor, an integrated SEC (Security Engine), and on-chip PCI, USB, and UTOPIA interfaces in a 516-pin TEBGA / PBGA package rated 0C to 105C. The part is supplied as 1.5 V core / 3.3 V I/O and fabricated in a 0.13 um CMOS process.
A PowerQUICC II MPU is a system-on-chip networking microprocessor that combines a general-purpose PowerPC core with a dedicated RISC communications engine (CPM). This dual-processor architecture is used in routers, switches, and wireless base stations where the CPM offloads DMA, TDM, ATM, and Ethernet MAC processing from the main core, freeing the CPU for routing, encryption, and control-plane software. PowerQUICC II sits within the broader taxonomy: MPU -> microprocessor -> processor -> integrated circuit -> semiconductor.
Key features include hardware-accelerated encryption via the integrated SEC engine, dual 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MACs through the CPM, a 32-bit/66 MHz PCI interface, USB 1.1 host/slave, UTOPIA-II for ATM/PHY glueless connectivity, and 16 Kbytes of instruction cache plus 16 Kbytes of data cache. The 516-pin PBGA (27 x 27 mm) package exposes the full external memory bus for SDRAM, Flash, and peripheral expansion.
The MPC8272 uses a 60x bus to external memory and a separate CPM local bus. The CPM contains independent RISC controllers for Fast Ethernet, HDLC/TDM, ATM, I2C, SPI, and USB, allowing wire-speed packet processing without CPU intervention. The integrated SEC engine performs DES, 3DES, AES, SHA-1, and MD5 in hardware, eliminating software-encryption bottlenecks in VPN and IPsec gateways.
Typical applications include small-to-medium enterprise routers, DSLAM line cards, industrial Ethernet gateways, wireless base station controllers, and IPsec/VPN acceleration. The 0C to 105C operating range supports industrial networking equipment deployed in uncontrolled environments.
When designing with the MPC8272VRMIBA, allocate generous power and ground planes around the 516-ball BGA to manage core current transients, follow the DDR/SDRAM routing rules in the hardware specification, and use a JTAG-controlled BDM/BDI debugger for low-level bring-up. This part is in NXP's EOL/end-of-life pipeline per the NXP product page, so design wins should be qualified against current lifecycle status and last-time-buy windows before committing to new production.
