ATMEGA8535-16PC 개요

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA8535-16PC is a low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8 KB In-System Programmable Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 512 B SRAM, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, delivered in a 40-pin PDIP package rated for 16 MHz operation and up to 16 MIPS throughput at 4.5 V to 5.5 V.

An 8-bit microcontroller is a single-chip computer that integrates a processor core, program memory, data memory, and peripherals such as timers, serial interfaces, and analog-to-digital converters. Within the power-management hierarchy of embedded systems, the MCU sits at the top as the system controller: it supervises power sequencing, sensor acquisition, and communication, making AVR-class MCUs a staple of industrial control, instrumentation, and education platforms.

Key features of the ATMEGA8535-16PC include the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 130 powerful instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle; 32 general-purpose working registers fully connected to the ALU; and three flexible Timer/Counters with compare modes and PWM outputs. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC, a byte-oriented Two-wire Serial Interface (TWI/I2C), a programmable serial USART, and an SPI interface round out the peripheral set, enabling compact single-chip designs with both analog sensing and multi-protocol communication.

Technically, the device is fully static, allowing operation down to DC clock rates for ultra-low-power designs, and includes internal and external interrupt sources, a programmable watchdog timer with an internal oscillator, and In-System Programming (ISP) via the SPI port for field updates without removing the chip. Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, and Standby sleep modes let designers trade responsiveness against current consumption.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, motor control and PWM actuation, sensor-based instrumentation using the 10-bit ADC, and hobby or educational embedded platforms supported by the MightyCore Arduino hardware package. The through-hole 40-DIP package makes the part ideal for prototyping on breadboards and for legacy equipment service.

A key design consideration is the 4.5 V to 5.5 V operating window: unlike its 2.7 V-capable ATmega8535L siblings, the -16PC speed grade requires a 5 V supply to reach 16 MHz, so level shifting is needed for 3.3 V peripherals.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, pinout data, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, giving engineers a complete selection resource.

🏭

Industrial Automation Controllers

The ATMEGA8535-16PC fits industrial control nodes that need deterministic digital sequencing plus local analog feedback. Its three Timer/Counters with compare modes generate PWM outputs for actuator and motor drive at up to 16 MIPS, while 32 I/O lines interface relays, limit switches, and optocoupler-isolated signals. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC reads potentiometers, pressure transducers, and 4-20 mA signals via external conditioning, letting one chip supervise an entire station. In-System Programming via SPI allows firmware updates without desoldering, minimizing production-line downtime, and the watchdog timer with internal oscillator provides autonomous recovery from field faults.

🔬

Sensor-Based Instrumentation

Multi-sensor instruments benefit directly from the ATMEGA8535-16PC peripheral integration. The 8-channel 10-bit ADC on PORTA digitizes up to eight analog sensors such as thermistors, humidity elements, and strain gauges at up to 15 kSPS, and the dedicated ADC Noise Reduction sleep mode suppresses digital switching noise during conversions for better effective resolution. TWI (I2C) and SPI interfaces add external EEPROMs, displays, and digital sensors without consuming the analog channels. With 512 B EEPROM for calibration constants and 512 B SRAM for buffers, a complete data-acquisition node fits in one 40-DIP device, and results transmit over the built-in USART to a PC or PLC.

🔧

Motor Control and PWM Actuation

The ATMEGA8535-16PC drives DC and stepper motors using its 16-bit Timer/Counter1 with two compare channels (OC1A/OC1B) for phase-correct or fast PWM, plus 8-bit Timer/Counter2 (OC2) for a third actuator channel. Closed-loop control is enabled by sampling encoder-derived feedback or analog current-sense signals on the 10-bit ADC, with the 16-bit input capture unit measuring pulse timing precisely. Running at 16 MHz provides 62.5 ns PWM resolution, and 5 V logic directly interfaces common gate-driver ICs. The through-hole DIP package also eases prototyping of motor-driver daughterboards in educational robotics and small machinery retrofits.

🧩

Educational and Hobby Embedded Platforms

The ATMEGA8535-16PC is a favorite teaching processor because the 40-pin DIP plugs into breadboards and zero-insertion-force sockets, tolerating repeated rework, and is supported by the MightyCore Arduino hardware package on GitHub alongside ATmega16, ATmega32, and ATmega8515. Students can program it via USBasp ISP without bootloaders, then graduate to SPI bootloaders for serial updates. The full peripheral mix - USART, SPI, TWI, PWM timers, and an 8-channel ADC - maps directly onto classic lab exercises: blinking GPIO, serial terminals, LCD interfacing, and analog sensor projects, all at low unit cost around $3 to $4 as of 2026-09-19.

🖥️

Legacy Equipment Repair and Retrofit

Service organizations maintaining 1990s and 2000s-era industrial machines frequently encounter ATmega8535-based controller boards. The ATMEGA8535-16PC and its drop-in sibling ATMEGA8535-16PU remain in active production, so failed chips can be replaced without board redesign. Because the chip is ISP-programmable, replacement devices can be flashed with recovered firmware hex files directly in the socket, restoring function in minutes. Where original silicon is unavailable, the pin-compatible ATMEGA16 or ATMEGA32 covers expanded rebuilds. The commercial 0C to +70C rating suits indoor equipment; choose the industrial -16PI variant for outdoor cabinets or refrigeration environments.

🌐

Communication and Data Loggers

The ATMEGA8535-16PC builds compact serial loggers using its hardware USART for RS-232/RS-485 links (with an external transceiver) and TWI/SPI for SD-card or EEPROM storage. The 512 B SRAM buffers telemetry frames, while EEPROM retains configuration across power cycles. Applications include weather stations sampling the 8 ADC channels, utility sub-metering with pulse-counting on external interrupt pins, and Modbus RTU slave nodes where the 16 MIPS throughput comfortably handles framing and CRC at 115200 baud. Sleep modes extend battery life in remote installations, with Power-down current low enough for year-long battery operation of intermittently sampling loggers.

What is the ATMEGA8535-16PC microcontroller?
The ATMEGA8535-16PC is a low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller from Microchip Technology with 8 KB In-System Programmable Flash, 512 B EEPROM, 512 B SRAM, 32 I/O lines, three timers, USART, SPI, TWI, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC. According to the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet, it delivers up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz and operates from 4.5 V to 5.5 V in a 40-pin PDIP package.
What is the operating voltage range of ATMEGA8535-16PC?
The ATMEGA8535-16PC operates from 4.5 V to 5.5 V. The '-16' speed grade requires a 5 V supply to achieve its 16 MHz maximum clock rate; the '-8' grade parts (ATmega8535L family) run at 8 MHz down to 2.7 V. According to the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet, running the -16PC below 4.5 V is outside specification and may reduce reliability and ADC accuracy.
What is the difference between ATMEGA8535-16PC and ATMEGA8535-16PU?
There is no functional difference between ATMEGA8535-16PC and ATMEGA8535-16PU; both are 40-pin PDIP, 16 MHz, 5 V commercial-grade parts with identical silicon. The 'PU' suffix denotes the lead-free (RoHS/Pb-free) molded package version while 'PC' is the older leaded suffix. DigiKey currently stocks ATMEGA8535-16PU (1,439 units at $3.78 as of 2026-09-19), making the PU the recommended drop-in replacement for new PC socket designs.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA8535-16PC?
The best drop-in replacement is ATMEGA8535-16PU, which is the same die in the same 40-pin PDIP footprint with identical pinout and only a lead-free plating difference. Other same-footprint Microchip options include the industrial-grade ATMEGA8535-16PI, and the pin-compatible ATMEGA16-16PU or ATMEGA32-16PU, which offer larger 16 KB and 32 KB Flash respectively. All solder into the same DIP-40 land pattern; only the program memory size and minor peripheral differences change.
Is ATMEGA16 a pin-compatible alternative to ATMEGA8535?
Yes, the ATmega16-16PU is largely pin-compatible with the ATmega8535 in 40-pin PDIP, with the same VCC/GND, XTAL, RESET, and port pin locations. According to Microchip datasheets, both share USART, SPI, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC on PORTA, but the ATmega16 provides 16 KB Flash (2x) versus 8 KB, and minor TWI pin function details differ on PORTC. Firmware must be recompiled, but no PCB change is needed.
Does ATMEGA8535-16PC have an ADC?
Yes, the ATMEGA8535-16PC integrates an 8-channel 10-bit successive-approximation ADC accessible on PORTA (PA0 to PA7), with an internal bandgap reference option and an external AREF pin. According to the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet, the ADC supports up to 15 kSPS at full 10-bit resolution in free-running mode and an ADC Noise Reduction sleep mode for improved conversion accuracy.
How much program memory does the ATMEGA8535 have?
The ATmega8535 provides 8 KB of In-System Programmable Flash with Read-While-Write capability, organized as 4K x 16, plus 512 B of EEPROM and 512 B of SRAM for data. According to the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet, the Flash endurance is rated for at least 10,000 write/erase cycles, sufficient for most firmware iterations and field updates via the SPI-based self-programming bootloader.
Can ATMEGA8535-16PC be programmed with Arduino?
Yes. The MightyCore Arduino hardware package (GitHub, MCUdude/MightyCore) explicitly supports the ATmega8535 alongside ATmega16 and ATmega32. You program the chip through an ISP programmer such as USBasp connected to the SPI pins, or via a bootloader burned into Flash. Because the 40-DIP is breadboard friendly, the ATMEGA8535-16PC is popular for education and prototyping.
What is the price of ATMEGA8535-16PC?
As of 2026-09-19, the closely matched ATMEGA8535-16PU (lead-free version) is listed by DigiKey at $3.78 unit price with in stock, and quantity discounts apply at 10 to 1000 pieces. The older ATMEGA8535-16PC suffix typically trades at similar or slightly higher prices through broker channels because it is the non-Pb legacy marking. Compare XAIPART tier pricing above for exact unit economics.
Where to buy ATMEGA8535-16PC online?
The ATMEGA8535-16PC can be purchased from Octopart-listed distributors (5 distributors listed), DigiKey (which stocks the equivalent ATMEGA8535-16PU), Microchip USA, and various broker platforms such as Onzuu and Partstack. As of 2026-09-19, DigiKey shows in-stock inventory of the PU variant, so for fastest delivery many buyers order the ATMEGA8535-16PU drop-in equivalent instead of hunting the legacy PC suffix.
What is the lead time and stock status of ATMEGA8535-16PC?
Exact ATMEGA8535-16PC lead time varies by distributor because the PC (leaded) suffix is a legacy marking; most volume supply has shifted to the ATMEGA8535-16PU. As of 2026-09-19, DigiKey reports ATMEGA8535-16PU in stock (1,439 units), meaning immediate shipment for the drop-in equivalent. For the exact PC suffix, expect broker sourcing with 2 to 8 week lead times; use the PU part to avoid delays.
ATMEGA8535 vs ATMEGA8515 - which should I choose?
Choose the ATMEGA8535-16PC when your application needs analog input: it has an 8-channel 10-bit ADC plus an analog comparator. Choose the ATMEGA8515 when cost matters and only digital peripherals are needed, since it drops the ADC but adds a second UART-capable USART configuration and identical TWI/SPI. Both are pin-compatible in 40-pin PDIP with the same 8 KB Flash and 16 MHz performance, so migration requires only firmware and an analog input review.
When should I choose ATMEGA8535-16PC over ATMEGA32-16PU?
Choose the ATMEGA8535-16PC when your design fits in 8 KB Flash and you want the lowest-cost 5 V DIP option with a 10-bit ADC. Choose the ATMEGA32-16PU when firmware growth risk exists, because it doubles the Flash to 32 KB and the SRAM to 2 KB while remaining pin-compatible in the same 40-pin PDIP. If your compiled code is under 7 KB today, the 8535 is economical; near 8 KB, pick the ATmega32 for headroom.
Is there a cross-brand (non-Microchip) equivalent for ATMEGA8535-16PC?
No true pin-to-pin cross-brand drop-in equivalent exists in a 40-pin PDIP for the ATmega8535's exact AVR pinout and peripheral map. Microchip's PIC16 series (for example the 40-pin PIC16C76/PIC16F876A) offers similar peripherals including ADC, USART, and SPI in DIP-40, but its pinout differs, requiring PCB or socket wiring changes and full firmware rewrite in PIC assembly or C. Cross-brand migration is therefore a redesign, not a drop-in swap.
Where can I download the ATMEGA8535-16PC datasheet PDF and pinout?
The official ATmega8535 complete datasheet PDF is available from Microchip at ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/2502S.pdf, and the product summary page is microchip.com/en-us/product/ATmega8535. The 40-pin PDIP pinout is in the datasheet package section: pin 10 is VCC, pin 11 GND, pin 9 RESET, pins 12/13 are XTAL2/XTAL1, and pins 33 to 40 are ADC inputs PA0 to PA7. Third-party mirrors such as AllDataSheet also host the PDF.
Is ATMEGA8535-16PC RoHS compliant?
No, the ATMEGA8535-16PC suffix indicates the older tin-lead (non-RoHS) package finish, so it is generally not RoHS-compliant for new EU-market designs. The ATMEGA8535-16PU is the RoHS-compliant, lead-free, halogen-free version with identical die and pinout. For lead-free assembly and compliance-driven products, order the PU suffix; the PC suffix remains relevant mainly for legacy repair and exemption-covered industrial uses.

엔지니어링 참조 데이터: ATMEGA8535-16PC — 비교, 설계 지침 및 규정 준수 정보.

선택 가이드

Choose the ATMEGA8535-16PC when you need a 5 V, 16 MHz 8-bit MCU with an 8-channel 10-bit ADC in a breadboard-friendly 40-pin DIP and your firmware fits in 8 KB Flash with 512 B SRAM. Order the ATMEGA8535-16PU instead if RoHS compliance or immediate stock matters - it is the identical die, lead-free, in stock at DigiKey. Choose ATMEGA8535-16PI for industrial -40C to +85C environments. If your application has no analog inputs, the ATMEGA8515-16PC lowers cost in the same footprint. When compiled code approaches 8 KB or buffers exceed 512 B SRAM, step up to the pin-compatible ATMEGA16-16PU or ATMEGA32-16PU for 2x or 4x memory without PCB changes. No cross-brand 40-DIP offers a true pin-to-pin AVR drop-in; PIC16-family parts in DIP-40 require redesign, so treat those as new-design candidates rather than replacements.

설계 노트

The -16PC speed grade requires 4.5 V to 5.5 V, so design the 5 V rail with at least 100 mA headroom per MCU including I/O sink currents. Decouple VCC (pin 10) with a 100 nF ceramic placed within 10 mm of the pin, and add a 10 uF bulk capacitor at the board entry. Filter AVCC (pin 30) from VCC through a 10 uH inductor or 100 ohm resistor plus 100 nF to ground - Microchip's datasheet shows this RC/LC filter as the standard ADC supply connection and it directly improves ADC noise performance.

Keep the crystal (XTAL1/XTAL2, pins 13/12) as close to the MCU as possible with 22 pF load capacitors (value depends on crystal CL - verify per crystal datasheet) and a ground guard ring for reliable 16 MHz start-up. For ADC accuracy, route analog traces on PORTA away from XTAL, PWM outputs OC1A/OC1B, and the USART lines; the ADC Noise Reduction sleep mode halts the core during conversion and can add 1 to 2 effective bits when combined with careful layout.

Never hold RESET (pin 9) floating - add a 10 kohm pull-up and optionally a 100 nF to ground for power-on-reset extension when VCC ramps slowly. PORTC pins PC2-PC7 are shared with JTAG; JTAG is enabled by default in fresh parts and will take over these six I/O pins - disable it via the JTD bit in MCUCSR (written twice per datasheet) or unprogram the JTAGEN fuse if you need full 32 I/O. Also remember the PC suffix is leaded: for RoHS-required builds order the ATMEGA8535-16PU instead.

For breadboard prototyping, note the 40-DIP 0.600 inch row spacing does not fit standard solderless breadboards - use two jumper-wire adapters or a DIP-40 carrier board. For production through-hole boards, specify an IPC-7251-compliant DIP-40 land pattern with 0.9 mm plated holes and provide ISP header access to PB5/PB6/PB7/RESET/GND/VCC so field firmware updates are possible without desoldering the device.

The PC suffix denotes the legacy leaded (non-Pb) PDIP finish, so it is not RoHS compliant for new EU-market designs; the ATMEGA8535-16PU is the RoHS-compliant, lead-free drop-in. AEC-Q100 is not applicable to this commercial-grade AVR product.
