ADUM1400CRWZ-RL Overview
A digital isolator is a semiconductor device that transfers data across an isolation barrier while blocking DC and low-frequency ground potential differences. The ADUM1400 belongs to the broader category of signal isolation ICs, sitting between optocouplers (legacy LED + photodiode technology) and newer transformer- or capacitive-coupled CMOS isolators. iCoupler technology combines high-speed CMOS logic with monolithic air-core transformers on a single silicon die, eliminating the LED aging and current-drive concerns of optocouplers.
Key features include 90 Mbps guaranteed data rate (NRZ), 2.5 ns typical propagation delay, 2 ns pulse-width distortion, and 25 kV/us CMTI which prevents data corruption during switching transients on the ground reference. The part operates from 2.7 V to 5.5 V on both sides independently, supporting level translation between mixed-voltage domains. The CR grade specifies a 0-25 Mbps maximum guaranteed data rate at 5 V (CW grade 90 Mbps) with low dynamic current consumption of 1.0 mA per channel at 0-2 Mbps.
Architecturally the ADUM1400 integrates four independent isolation channels with on-chip transformers and CMOS refresh circuitry on both sides of the barrier. Refresh cycles reconstruct the input logic state at the output every 1 us or less, ensuring deterministic output state during long input low-impedance intervals without an external clock.
Typical applications include industrial fieldbus isolation (RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C), microcontroller servo-loop feedback isolation, motor-drive gate-driver signal isolation, and isolated SPI or GPIO interfaces for medical, solar inverter and PLC systems.
When designing with this device, place 0.1 uF bypass capacitors on both VDD1 and VDD2 pins within 2 mm of the IC, and route the high-speed signals with 50 ohm controlled impedance. The exposed lead frame pad is electrically floating and must not be connected.

Typical Applications
ADUM1400CRWZ-RL is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial RS-485 / RS-232 Isolation, Isolated SPI / GPIO for Motor Control, Isolated CAN Transceiver Interface, Solar Inverter / Power Conversion Feedback, Medical Equipment Patient-Isolation Interface, PLC Digital Input Module Isolation.
Industrial RS-485 / RS-232 Isolation
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL provides galvanic isolation for RS-485 transceiver signal lines in industrial networks, where 2500 Vrms isolation is needed between field wiring and the host MCU. Its 90 Mbps data rate far exceeds the 10 Mbps required by RS-485/RS-232, leaving margin for any rise-time-limited signal chain. Place between the bus transceiver (e.g., ADM3485) and the MCU UART pins; the dual 2.7-5.5 V supplies allow level shifting between 3.3 V MCU and 5 V transceiver logic. The 25 kV/us CMTI ensures clean data even when the bus experiences fast ESD-driven transients on the field side.
Recommended
Isolated SPI / GPIO for Motor Control
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL isolates SPI communication lines between an MCU and a high-voltage gate driver board, where the low-voltage control section must remain protected from high-side switching transients. With four forward channels it cleanly handles SPI MOSI, MISO, SCLK, and a dedicated CS line. The 25 kV/us CMTI is critical because motor phase nodes can slew at >10 kV/s during commutation. The 90 Mbps data rate supports high-speed SPI up to 50 MHz without distortion; the 16-SOIC wide-body footprint gives the required 8 mm creepage for reinforced insulation per IEC 60747-17.
Recommended
Isolated CAN Transceiver Interface
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL isolates a CAN bus transceiver (TXD, RXD, and auxiliary signals) from the host MCU, supporting up to 2.5 kVrms of galvanic isolation required by IEC 61131-2 for industrial automation. With 90 Mbps of bandwidth it vastly exceeds the 1 Mbps CAN-FD requirement, leaving timing margin. The four channels allow TXD, RXD, plus two additional signals like CAN_STBY or an interrupt line to cross the barrier. Dual independent supplies enable level shifting between the 5 V transceiver and a 3.3 V MCU.
Recommended
Solar Inverter / Power Conversion Feedback
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL provides primary-to-secondary isolation for PWM feedback, fault signals, and enable lines in solar inverter and telecom power supply designs. The 2500 Vrms isolation meets the reinforced-insulation requirement for grid-tie inverters. The four channels cleanly handle PWM, sync, and two fault-flag lines. The 25 kV/us CMTI is essential where the high-side IGBT/SiC switches at >50 kHz with >5 kV/us dV/dt - the isolator must not corrupt data during these transitions.
Recommended
Medical Equipment Patient-Isolation Interface
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL provides 2500 Vrms patient-isolation barriers in IEC 60601-1 medical equipment such as patient monitors, infusion pumps, and diagnostic imaging interfaces. With four channels it isolates SPI, I2C, or general-purpose GPIO between the patient-connected analog section and the operator-interface digital section. The 2.7-5.5 V dual supplies allow the patient side to operate from isolated 3.3 V while the operator side uses 5 V logic; the wide-body 16-SOIC footprint provides the required creepage and clearance for two MOPP protection.
Recommended
PLC Digital Input Module Isolation
The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL is widely deployed in PLC digital-input modules to isolate 24 V field wiring from the backplane logic. With 4/0 directionality, four field-input channels cross the barrier in a single IC, enabling 8 or 16 channels per module when stacked. The 25 kV/us CMTI tolerates the dV/dt from field-side relays switching under inductive loads. The 2.7-5.5 V input-side supply accepts 3.3 V or 5 V field-side pull-ups, simplifying the BOM. The 16-SOIC wide-body footprint gives 8 mm of creepage per IEC 61131-2.

Key Differentiators
- iCoupler transformer technology - no LED aging (vs Traditional optocouplers (e.g., 6N137))
- 25 kV/us CMTI vs typical 10 kV/us for optocouplers (vs Optocoupler-based isolators)
- 4 channels in one IC vs 4 separate optocouplers (vs Discrete optocoupler solutions)
Design Notes
Place 0.1 uF low-ESR ceramic bypass capacitors within 2 mm of both VDD1 (pin 1) and VDD2 (pin 16). Add a 1 uF bulk capacitor on each supply within 5 mm of the IC to handle the dynamic current transients at high data rates. The ADUM1400CRWZ-RL draws up to 31 mA per channel at 100 Mbps - the supply trace must be at least 0.25 mm wide to avoid IR drop. Tie both GND1 pins (6 and 15) to a low-impedance ground plane; do not skip pin 15 because it carries the high-side return path.
The exposed lead-frame pad on the bottom of the 16-SOIC wide-body is electrically floating and must NOT be soldered to the ground plane or any signal trace. Use a keep-out area of at least 1 mm on all sides of the pad to maintain the 8 mm creepage distance specified for reinforced isolation. Maintain 8 mm clearance between VDD1/GND1 and VDD2/GND2 on the same surface to satisfy IEC 60747-17 basic insulation; for reinforced insulation, double the spacing to 16 mm or use a slot in the PCB.
Route the input and output logic signals as 50 ohm controlled-impedance traces if they exceed 25 mm. Avoid routing signal traces directly under the isolator to minimize coupling across the isolation barrier. Use a ground-fill keep-out zone of at least 0.5 mm around the device body to control stray capacitance that could degrade CMTI performance. Match trace lengths within a packet (e.g., SPI SCLK and MOSI) to within 5 mm to minimize pulse-width distortion at high data rates.
Do not connect both sides of the isolation barrier to the same ground - the entire purpose of the isolator is to break the ground loop. Note that the CR grade is rated to 25 Mbps, not 90 Mbps - if your design runs above 25 Mbps, choose the CW grade (ADUM1400CW). The CR/AR/BR/CW speed-grade marking on the package top determines the actual data rate; do not assume based on the part number suffix alone. Do not insert more than 2 pF of capacitance across any signal pair, as this could degrade the CMTI margin.
