Typical Applications
ISO7721BDWR is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Fieldbus Communication, Isolated SPI/UART Interface, Motor Control, Power Converters, Medical Equipment, Automotive Electronics.
Industrial Fieldbus Communication
The ISO7721BDWR provides galvanic isolation for CAN, RS232, and RS485 buses, ensuring reliable data transmission in noisy industrial environments. Its 100 Mbps data rate and 85 kV/Β΅s CMTI allow it to handle high-speed communication while rejecting common-mode transients. The reinforced 5000 Vrms isolation protects sensitive controllers from voltage spikes and ground loops, making it ideal for PLCs, motor drives, and factory automation systems.
Recommended
Isolated SPI/UART Interface
The ISO7721BDWR can be used to isolate SPI or UART signals between microcontrollers and peripheral devices, such as ADCs, DACs, or sensors. Its dual-channel configuration with one forward and one reverse channel is ideal for bidirectional communication. The high data rate supports fast SPI clocks, while the reinforced isolation ensures safety in high-voltage applications like motor control or power converters.
Recommended
Motor Control
In motor control systems, the ISO7721BDWR isolates the control signals from the high-voltage power stage. Its high CMTI (85 kV/Β΅s) ensures reliable operation in the presence of fast-switching transients from IGBTs or MOSFETs. The reinforced isolation rating of 5000 Vrms provides safety insulation, protecting the low-voltage control circuitry from potential faults. The wide temperature range (-55Β°C to +125Β°C) makes it suitable for industrial motor drives.
Recommended
Power Converters
The ISO7721BDWR is used in power converters to isolate feedback signals and control signals across the isolation barrier. Its high data rate and robust EMC performance ensure accurate signal transmission in switching power supplies. The reinforced isolation rating meets safety requirements for mains-connected applications. The device's low power consumption and wide supply voltage range make it suitable for both AC-DC and DC-DC converters.
Recommended
Medical Equipment
In medical equipment, patient safety is paramount, and the ISO7721BDWR provides reinforced isolation to protect patients and operators from electric shock. Its 5000 Vrms isolation rating meets stringent safety standards. The high CMTI ensures reliable operation in environments with electromagnetic interference. The device is suitable for applications such as patient monitoring, diagnostic equipment, and medical imaging systems.
Recommended
Automotive Electronics
The ISO7721BDWR can be used in automotive electronics for isolating communication interfaces like CAN and RS485. Its wide temperature range and high CMTI make it suitable for under-hood applications. However, for AEC-Q100 qualified parts, consider the ISO7721QDRQ1 variant. The device is used in battery management systems, motor controllers, and infotainment systems.

Key Differentiators
- Reinforced isolation rating of 5000 Vrms (vs ISO7721DWVR)
- High CMTI of 85 kV/Β΅s (vs ADUM2281CRIZ)
- Fail-safe low output (vs ISO7721FBDWR)
Design Notes
For optimal EMC performance, place decoupling capacitors (0.1 Β΅F and 10 Β΅F) close to the VCC1 and VCC2 pins. Ensure a solid ground plane on both sides of the isolation barrier. Maintain proper creepage and clearance distances (at least 8 mm for 5000 Vrms) between the input and output sides to meet safety standards.
Keep the isolation barrier clear of any copper traces or components to avoid reducing the isolation rating. Route high-voltage traces away from the low-voltage side. Use a slot in the PCB under the isolator to increase creepage distance if needed.
Do not exceed the absolute maximum supply voltage of 6 V on VCC1 or VCC2. Ensure the input signals do not exceed the supply voltage. When using the enable pins, note that disabling the outputs may cause the fail-safe state to be asserted. Refer to the datasheet for proper enable timing.
Compliance Information
