PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR Overview
What is a 32-bit microcontroller? A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer containing a CPU core, program memory (Flash), working memory (RAM), and a range of on-chip peripherals such as timers, communication interfaces, and analog blocks. The PIC32MX4xx series sits in the PIC32 family (microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> MIPS M4K architecture -> PIC32MX family), offering higher performance than 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 parts while keeping the PIC ecosystem, MPLAB X toolchain, and Harmony firmware library compatibility.
Key features of the PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR include a 32-bit MIPS M4K core running at 80 MHz (80 MIPS), 128 KB Flash program memory, 32 KB SRAM data memory, an integrated USB 2.0 full-speed On-The-Go (OTG) controller, a 10-bit ADC, and a DMA engine. The device supports 53 digital I/O pins across five I/O ports in the 64-pin VQFN package and operates from 2.5V to 3.6V supply. Code protection is supported via Microchip's standard flash protection bits, and the chip is rated for industrial -40C to +85C operation.
Architecturally the PIC32MX440F128H combines a five-stage pipelined M4K core with Harvard-style Flash/SRAM buses, a hardware multiplier/divider, a 10-bit 1 Msps successive-approximate converter with multiple input muxes, dual I2C, dual SPI, dual UART, and an integrated USB-OTG PHY. Peripheral pin select (PPS) on select pins and configurable interrupt priorities make firmware partitioning easier, while DMA offloads repetitive data movement from the core for ADC and USB traffic.
Typical applications include USB peripherals and Human Interface Devices (HID), industrial sensor interfaces, motor control front-ends, low-cost graphical user interfaces, and consumer products that benefit from USB connectivity without an external bridge. The 80 MHz headroom and DMA simplify streaming protocols, and the 10-bit ADC is sufficient for many industrial sensing tasks.
When designing with this MCU, plan the 64-pin VQFN land pattern with a thermal pad that must be soldered to a ground copper pour for both electrical and thermal performance. Decouple VDD/VDDCORE/USB rails per Microchip's PIC32MX4xx reference design, and reserve a 12 MHz primary crystal plus the 48 MHz USB clock domain per the datasheet. Source-impedance matching on USB DP/DM is required for USB-OTG compliance.

Typical Applications
PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR is suitable for 6 applications: USB Human Interface Device (HID) Peripherals, Industrial Sensor Interface Boards, Low-Cost Graphical User Interfaces, Consumer Electronics with USB Connectivity, Motor Control Front-End Controllers, Data Logging Edge Devices.
USB Human Interface Device (HID) Peripherals
The PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR's integrated USB 2.0 Full-Speed On-The-Go controller and 80 MHz MIPS M4K core make it ideal for USB HID peripherals such as keyboards, mice, game controllers, and custom input devices. The 32 KB SRAM is sufficient for HID report buffers and small protocol stacks, and Microchip's MPLAB Harmony USB stack provides a certified HID class driver. The USB DP/DM pins must be routed with 90 ohm differential impedance and length-matched, while VBUS sensing uses the dedicated USB_VBUS pin. Operating at 80 MHz at 3.3 V gives plenty of headroom for HID polling at 1 kHz plus debouncing, capacitive scanning, or LED matrix driving without timing concerns.

Industrial Sensor Interface Boards
The PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR fits industrial sensor interface boards because it combines a 10-bit ADC, DMA for moving ADC samples without CPU intervention, and 53 I/O pins for multiple sensor channels. Industrial sensors such as 4-20 mA loops, thermocouples (with external ADC or amplifier), and digital load cells interface through the I/O and I2C/SPI buses. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature range allows deployment in factory floors and outdoor enclosures. The 80 MHz CPU cycles plus hardware multiplier accelerates filtering, linearization, and Modbus RTU framing in firmware.
Recommended
Low-Cost Graphical User Interfaces
The PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR is well matched to low-cost graphical user interfaces driving small TFT or OLED displays over SPI or parallel 8080 interfaces. At 80 MHz and 128 KB Flash, the MCU can run Microchip's gfx library with multiple widgets, buttons, and animations while still leaving room for the USB stack or a motor control loop. The 32 KB SRAM holds small frame buffers and display lists. The DMA engine can refresh displays without CPU intervention, and the 53 I/O pins drive the data bus plus touch interface. For TFT up to 320x240 the chip delivers smooth transitions.

Motor Control Front-End Controllers
The PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR serves as a sensor-interface or command front-end for motor control systems. Its 10-bit ADC and DMA simplify current/voltage sensing for BLDC or stepper control loops, while its timers can output PWM signals for power-stage control. At 80 MHz the firmware loop runs fast enough to handle field-oriented control (FOC) schemes with software floating point, or to drive the host protocol (CAN, UART, USB) that commands a separate power inverter. The 53 I/O pins accommodate multiple encoder and Hall-sensor inputs plus serial control links.
Recommended
Data Logging Edge Devices
The PIC32MX440F128HT-80I/MR handles data-logging edge devices such as environmental monitors, asset trackers, and predictive-maintenance sensors. The 128 KB Flash supports small file systems, and the DMA moves ADC samples and sensor data into SRAM buffers without CPU overhead. USB-OTG enables quick file transfer to a host PC. The -40C to +85C temperature range supports outdoor and industrial deployments. Connect SPI FRAM or SD cards via SPI for storage expansion. The 80 MHz CPU plus hardware multiply accelerates logging protocols and timestamp management.

Design Notes
The 64-pin VQFN (9x9 mm) package has a center exposed thermal pad that MUST be soldered to a ground copper pour for both electrical reference and thermal dissipation. Use a 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm pitch via array under the EP, with vias stitched to the inner ground layer. Failing to solder the EP can cause thermal runaway at 80 MHz operation.
Place 100 nF decoupling capacitors as close as possible to every VDD/VSS pin pair. Add a bulk 4.7 uF to 10 uF ceramic on each VDD rail and a separate 1 uF for the 1.8V VCAP pin (voltage regulator output). For USB operation add a 10 uF bulk capacitor near the USB VDD pin (USBVDD).
Configure the oscillator with the correct primary oscillator configuration bits. The 80 MHz operation requires an 8 MHz primary crystal with the PLL configured to multiply by 10. Without correct FPLLIDIV and FPLLMULT settings the core will not run at full speed. Refer to the PIC32MX4xx Oscillator Configuration Diagram in the datasheet before locking the configuration bits.
Route the USB DP (RF2) and DM (RF3) signals as a 90 ohm differential pair with length matching within 150 mil. Keep the pair over a continuous ground plane and avoid routing near clock traces or switching nodes. The USB specification is highly sensitive to impedance discontinuities.
