THVD1552DGS Overview
Background: an RS-485 transceiver is a physical-layer interface IC that translates a low-voltage differential logic signal on a UART or SPI controller side to the rugged, balanced differential bus levels defined by the TIA/EIA-485A standard. By sitting between the application MCU and the twisted-pair cable, it provides the bus biasing, line driving strength, and ESD/EFT immunity required for industrial environments where long cable runs pick up motor noise, lightning surges, and hot-plug transients.
Key features include a 4.5 V to 5.5 V single-supply operating range, ±30-kV HBM bus-pin ESD (human-body model), ±18-kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge, ±25-kV IEC 61000-4-2 air-gap discharge, and integrated IEC 61000-4-4 EFT immunity that removes the need for external TVS protection on the bus. The receiver failsafe design guarantees a known logic output when the bus is idle, shorted, or open.
Architecturally, the THVD1552 uses a differential line driver with slew-rate-limited outputs and a wide-common-mode receiver that meets the TIA/EIA-485A standard, allowing up to 256 transceivers on a single bus when using lower-speed family members (the THVD1552 is optimized for higher speed). The half-/full-duplex variants in the THVD15xx family share the bus-pin ESD cell, simplifying multi-protocol design.
Typical applications include factory automation PLC backplanes, motor-drive communication links, solar inverter telemetry, building-automation RS-485 trunks, and any cable runs through noisy industrial cabinets.
When designing with this part, place 100 nF decoupling close to VCC and use a 120 Ω termination at the bus ends only. Total bus load (stub length and cable capacitance) limits the maximum signaling rate, so verify cable length against the 50-Mbps data-rate budget.

Typical Applications
THVD1552DGS is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial PLC RS-485 Backbone, Motor Drive Communication Link, Solar Inverter Telemetry, Building-Automation RS-485 Trunks, Factory Floor Sensor Hubs, Outdoor Lighting and Utility Cabinets.
Industrial PLC RS-485 Backbone
The THVD1552DGS provides the differential bus drive and ±18-kV IEC ESD immunity required for RS-485 trunks running between PLCs and remote I/O blocks. Its 50-Mbps signaling rate supports deterministic backplane traffic while integrated ±30-kV HBM bus-pin ESD eliminates the need for external TVS diodes near field terminals. The 10-pin VSSOP (DGS) footprint saves board area versus SOIC-8 competitors, and the −40 °C to +125 °C operating range handles unconditioned cabinet temperatures. Place a 100 nF VCC bypass within 2 mm of pin 8 and add a 120 Ω termination at each cable end to maintain signal integrity across multi-drop wiring.
Recommended
Motor Drive Communication Link
Variable-frequency drives and servo amplifiers use the THVD1552DGS to relay control and feedback telemetry over RS-485 to a centralized motion controller. The transceiver's ±18-kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact, ±25-kV air-gap, and integrated IEC 61000-4-4 EFT immunity allow the bus to survive the high dV/dt transients produced by IGBT switching. Its 50-Mbps rate tracks real-time torque, position, and fault data with negligible latency. Tie the DE and RE pins together for full-duplex point-to-point cabling between drive and controller, and use shielded twisted-pair with grounded shield at the drive end for maximum EMI rejection.
Recommended
Solar Inverter Telemetry
Solar string inverters and combiner boxes stream telemetry (DC string voltage, current, temperature, fault flags) to monitoring gateways via RS-485, where the THVD1552DGS meets the rugged outdoor transient environment. Its ±18-kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD and IEC 61000-4-4 EFT immunity protect the bus from near-direct lightning coupling on long rooftop cable runs. The 10-pin VSSOP (DGS) form factor fits inside the inverter junction-box cover, and the industrial −40 °C to +125 °C operating range tolerates attic and desert installations. Use a low-frequency slew-rate-limited variant (e.g., THVD1452) for cable runs beyond 100 m.
Recommended
Building-Automation RS-485 Trunks
BACnet MS/TP, Modbus RTU, and other building-automation protocols run on multi-drop RS-485 trunks served by the THVD1552DGS at every HVAC, lighting, and access-control node. The transceiver's receiver fail-safe (idle/short/open bus detection) ensures deterministic logic levels when many nodes are powered down, preventing bus contention. Integrated ±18-kV IEC ESD lets installers terminate field wiring directly to the PCB without external TVS arrays, reducing cost per node. The VSSOP-10 package fits inside slim wall-mount enclosures behind electrical outlets.
Recommended
Factory Floor Sensor Hubs
Distributed sensor hubs (pressure, flow, level, vibration) stream data via RS-485 to a programmable logic controller using the THVD1552DGS as the physical-layer interface. The device's wide common-mode range and ESD immunity tolerate long shielded-cable runs through electrically noisy cabinets. Its 50-Mbps rate accommodates vibration-spectrum streaming and high-speed analog transient capture. Combine with a digital isolator for galvanic isolation between the sensor-side field ground and the controller logic ground, which is critical in substations or outdoor cabinets where ground-potential differences exceed 50 V.
Recommended
Outdoor Lighting and Utility Cabinets
Stadium, highway, and streetlight controllers use the THVD1552DGS to relay dimming schedules and fault telemetry over RS-485 to a central management system. The transceiver's extended −40 °C to +125 °C operating range handles road-cabinet temperature extremes, and integrated IEC ESD/EFT immunity protects against induced surges from nearby utility switching. The 50-Mbps rate is overkill for typical 9.6-kbps lighting traffic but future-proofs the design for video-edge-analytic nodes sharing the same trunk.

Key Differentiators
- Integrated ±18-kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact ESD eliminates external TVS BOM (vs MAX3485)
- 50-Mbps signaling rate is 5–10× faster than competing 10-Mbps RS-485 transceivers (vs SN65HVD72)
- Industrial −40 °C to +125 °C operating range in same 10-pin VSSOP (vs MAX3485ESA)
Design Notes
Place a 100 nF X7R decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of the VCC pin (pin 8 on DGS). The line driver draws short current spikes during bus transitions; a longer loop inductance from the cap to VCC will inject common-mode noise onto the bus. For multi-node boards, add a 10 µF bulk cap on the same 5-V rail as close to the transceiver's supply pin as practical. Route DI, DE, RE, and RO away from the bus traces and avoid routing them parallel to A/Y or B/Z for more than 5 mm to minimize capacitive coupling from the bus onto the logic side.
Do not leave the DE and RE enable pins floating. If unused, tie DE directly to GND and RE directly to VCC (or pull DE high and RE low only when the bus is active). Floating enables can cause the device to half-power the bus at indeterminate times and draw unnecessary quiescent current. Also, do not exceed 50 Mbps on long cables - the THVD1552's rise-time budget allows signaling at 50 Mbps over 10–20 m of twisted pair, but for runs beyond 100 m, drop to the THVD1452DGS (1 Mbps slew-rate-limited) to avoid ringing and EMI.
Use a 120 Ω ±1% termination resistor at each end of the RS-485 cable (only at the two farthest nodes - intermediate nodes must be left unterminated to avoid loading). The characteristic impedance of twisted pair (100 Ω typical) requires a parallel 120 Ω resistor at each end to match; alternatively use two 60 Ω resistors in series at each end. Keep bus stubs under 100 mm. Place the THVD1552DGS within 30 mm of the bus connector to minimize common-mode impedance and avoid ESD coupling through the connector leads.
Although the THVD1552DGS integrates ±18-kV IEC ESD and IEC 61000-4-4 EFT immunity, high-energy surge events at the cable entry require a separate TVS protection array (e.g., SMAJ-type) plus an SMBJ-grade common-mode choke. The integrated ESD cell handles routine static, but a direct or near-direct lightning strike will exceed the device rating. For surge-prone outdoor runs, place a bidirectional TVS rated for 12 V working and 400 W peak pulse between A and B before the transceiver's bus pins.
