TPS65217CRSLT Overview

The Texas Instruments TPS65217CRSLT is a single-chip Power Management IC (PMIC) that integrates three step-down DC/DC converters, four low-dropout (LDO) regulators, a linear Li-ion/Li-polymer battery charger, a dual-input power path (USB/AC), and a white LED boost driver in a 48-pin VQFN (6x6 mm) package. It is specifically designed to power the AM335x ARM Cortex-A8 application processor in portable and 5-V line-powered systems, and operates from an input range of 4.3 V to 5.8 V with 2.25 MHz switching frequency.

A PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is a highly integrated device that consolidates multiple voltage rails, charging, sequencing, and supervisory functions into a single silicon die. In the system hierarchy, it sits between the input power source (battery or wall adapter) and the application processor, replacing what would otherwise be 5-10 discrete regulators. PMICs are essential in space-constrained portable designs such as tablets, handhelds, and embedded modules where board area, BOM count, and power-sequencing reliability are critical design constraints.

The TPS65217CRSLT supports 2-A output current on the linear charger power path with a 700-mA maximum charge current, 20-V tolerant USB and AC inputs, and an 1800-mA current limit option on the USB input. Thermal regulation, dynamic power-path management, and integrated power-good signaling simplify host-side firmware. The high-frequency 2.25-MHz switching converters enable the use of small 1-uH inductors and 0402/0603 ceramic capacitors, reducing total PCB footprint.

Architecturally, the device combines hysteretic and PWM buck controllers for high efficiency across load, low-Iq LDOs for always-on rails, and a current-mode linear charger with JEITA-style thermal regulation. The integrated boost converter drives white LEDs for display backlighting with software-controllable brightness. According to the TI datasheet PDF, the TPS65217x family is shipped in a 48-pin leadless 6-mm x 6-mm VQFN package with 0.4-mm pitch, and is qualified for industrial temperature ranges.

Typical applications include AM335x-based Sitara processor boards (BeagleBone Black, industrial HMI panels), portable medical data-acquisition tablets, handheld barcode scanners, e-readers, and ruggedized 5-V point-of-sale terminals. The wide 4.3-5.8-V input range makes it directly compatible with USB 2.0/3.0 VBUS rails, single-cell Li-ion batteries, and 5-V regulated adapters without additional front-end conditioning.

When designing with the TPS65217CRSLT, place the input bulk capacitors as close as possible to the PVIN and PGND pins to minimize parasitic inductance. Use a 4-layer PCB with a dedicated ground plane for best thermal performance at 2-A charging current. Refer to the TI TPS65217EVM evaluation module schematic for reference layout, recommended inductor selection, and proper power-good pull-up configuration.

Selection Guide

Choose the TPS65217CRSLT when designing a new AM335x-based board in prototype or low-volume production runs (under 1000 units), where 250-piece reel packaging (T suffix) is preferred over the 3000-piece R-reel alternative. For high-volume manufacturing above 3000 pieces, choose the TPS65217CRSLR instead - identical silicon, only the reel quantity differs. If the part is out of stock at distributors, both TPS65217DRSLT (revision D) and TPS652170RSLT (revision 0) are fully compatible drop-in alternatives in the same VQFN-48 footprint. For legacy designs that already use revision A, TPS65217ARSLT is also compatible but not recommended for new designs due to its older timing characteristics.

  • Revision C silicon vs older revision A (vs TPS65217ARSLT (revision A))

Design Notes

At 2-A continuous charge current from a 5-V USB source into a 3.7-V Li-ion cell, the TPS65217CRSLT dissipates up to 2.6 W as heat in the linear charger. The 48-pin VQFN package with exposed thermal pad has a typical theta_JA of approximately 28 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC board. Use at least 1 square inch of top-layer copper tied to PGND to keep the junction temperature rise below 50 C above ambient. For high-ambient (>60 C) enclosures, derate charge current via ISET1/ISET2 resistors.

Place input bulk capacitors (10 uF X5R minimum) within 3 mm of the PVIN and PGND pins to minimize parasitic inductance that couples switching noise into the analog rails. Route the LX1/LX2/LX3 switch-node traces short and narrow (under 5 mm), and shield each switch node with a grounded copper pour on the layer below. Per the TI TPS65217EVM reference design, use a 4-layer stack-up with layer 2 as a solid ground plane to provide the best EMI and thermal performance.

Tie the AGND and PGND pins to a single-point ground connection at the exposed thermal pad to avoid ground loops between the analog control circuits and the high-current switching returns. Do not route analog signal traces (I2C, ISET, PGOOD, nRESET) parallel to the LX switch nodes for more than 5 mm without a ground shield - coupling can inject noise into the host I2C bus and cause intermittent communication failures during load transients.

Do not exceed the 20-V USB/AC adapter transient rating by hot-plugging inductive adapters without external TVS protection. The internal clamps will dissipate the surge but may exceed absolute maximum ratings on rapid transients above 24 V. Add a USBLC6-2SC6 or equivalent TVS array at the connector if the system is used with automotive or industrial 12-24 V sources. Also verify that the THERM pin thermistor network uses a 10-kohm NTC (beta = 3950) per TI reference schematic - incorrect NTC beta values disable JEITA-style thermal protection.
