A3PE3000L-FGG324 Visão geral

The Microchip Technology A3PE3000L-FGG324 is a ProASIC3L low-power Flash-based FPGA with 3,000,000 system gates, 221 user I/Os, and support for core voltages from 1.2V to 1.5V, housed in a 324-ball fine-pitch FBGA (324-BGA) surface-mount package.

An FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) is a semiconductor device that implements custom digital logic through a fabric of configurable logic blocks (CLBs) connected by programmable interconnects. Unlike SRAM-based FPGAs, the ProASIC3L family stores its configuration in on-chip nonvolatile Flash, giving a single-chip, instant-on solution with no external configuration device required - a key advantage in the programmable logic hierarchy spanning SPLDs, CPLDs, and FPGAs.

Key features of the A3PE3000L include Flash*Freeze technology for ultra-low static power, up to 75,264 configurable logic cells, support for single-ended and differential I/O standards, Schmitt Trigger option on single-ended inputs (A3PE3000L), weak pull-up/pull-downs, and IEEE 1149.1 (JTAG) boundary scan test per the Microchip ProASIC3L datasheet (DS50003268). The device operates from a 1.5V operating supply (commercial range 0C to +70C for this speed grade) with pin-compatible packages across the ProASIC3L family.

Architecturally, the fabric combines VersaTiles with embedded Flash technology built on a standard CMOS process, delivering reprogrammability with inherently low power and high security versus SRAM FPGAs. The low total cost of ownership (TOC) makes the family attractive for high-volume designs where an external boot Flash and power-up configuration time are undesirable.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, portable and battery-powered instrumentation, communications line cards, and medical monitoring equipment where the Flash*Freeze mode cuts standby power dramatically.

Designers should budget the 1.2V to 1.5V core rail carefully: lowering VCORE to 1.2V maximizes power savings, while 1.5V supports higher performance up to the 250MHz-class timing limits.

Aplicações típicas

A3PE3000L-FGG324 é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Automation and Control, Portable and Battery-Powered Instruments, Medical Monitoring and Diagnostic Equipment, Communications Line Cards and Networking, Avionics and Ruggedized Systems (via -I grade), Video and Display Interface Systems.

🏭

Industrial Automation and Control

The A3PE3000L-FGG324 fits industrial controller and I/O-module designs where a single-chip, instantly-on FPGA simplifies the bill of materials and improves field reliability. Its 3M system gates and 75,264 logic cells absorb glue logic, motor PWM sequencing, and safety interlock logic, while 221 user I/Os interface encoders, sensors, and fieldbus transceivers directly. The nonvolatile Flash configuration means no configuration PROM to fail in electrically noisy factory environments, and JTAG boundary scan (IEEE 1149.1) supports production board test. Place the FPGA between the PLC backplane and peripheral drivers with bank voltages matched to 3.3V or 2.5V signaling; the 0C to +70C commercial grade suits cabinet-mounted electronics, while the -I variant covers outdoor or cold-storage installations.

📱

Portable and Battery-Powered Instruments

Battery-powered test and measurement instruments benefit directly from the A3PE3000L's Flash*Freeze technology: asserting the FLASH_FREEZE pin retains the full FPGA configuration and register state while cutting power to microamp levels between measurements. The 1.2V core option further reduces dynamic energy at moderate clock rates, extending battery runtime versus 1.5V-core SRAM FPGAs that also require a configuration device drawing boot current. With 3 million gates, the device handles display drivers, USB/UART bridging, and DSP front-end preprocessing around a low-power microcontroller host. Designers should sequence the FLASH_FREEZE entry with sensor shutdown to maximize savings, and budget I/O bank voltages at 1.8V to minimize interface power on battery rails.

💊

Medical Monitoring and Diagnostic Equipment

Patient monitors, portable diagnostic units, and imaging front-ends use the A3PE3000L-FGG324 for deterministic real-time signal aggregation with a secure single-chip FPGA. The nonvolatile Flash fabric resists bitstream interception and powers up instantly when a nurse powers the cart - valuable in emergency settings - while Flash*Freeze keeps the standby rail low during periods when the display sleeps but monitoring must continue. The 221 I/Os connect ECG/SpO2 front-end ADCs, isolation barriers, and alarm indicators; Schmitt Trigger inputs improve noise immunity on long sensor leads. For bedside designs near 0C to +70C limits the commercial grade suffices; choose A3PE3000L-FGG324I for sterilizable or transport hardware subject to wider ambient swings.

🌐

Communications Line Cards and Networking

Access-network line cards, bridge/router control planes, and backplane adapters use the A3PE3000L-FGG324 for protocol bridging, traffic framing, and hot-swap control logic. The 250 MHz-class fabric timing covers OC-x framer glue, TDM switching, and housekeeping state machines, while IEEE 1149.1 boundary scan simplifies in-circuit test of dense 324-ball assemblies. JTAG chain integration with backplane CPUs reduces bring-up time, and the single-chip Flash configuration eliminates configuration PROM programming in repair depots. Keep core at 1.5V for line-rate timing paths and provide solid ground return for the many 2.5V LVDS-class I/O banks; the FGG fine-pitch ball grid array demands controlled-impedance breakout routing on the PCB.

✈️

Avionics and Ruggedized Systems (via -I grade)

While the commercial A3PE3000L-FGG324 targets 0C to +70C, the identical-die A3PE3000L-FGG324I drop-in extends the platform to industrial/extended ranges for ruggedized ground systems, UAV ground stations, and test racks. Flash FPGAs are inherently resistant to configuration upsets compared to SRAM fabrics because the configuration is stored in nonvolatile Flash cells, and the single-chip design removes the configuration-read failure mode in high-vibration environments. Designers implementing gate-array-replacement logic, sensor aggregation, and MIL-STD-style discrete I/O conditioning use the 221 I/Os with Schmitt Trigger inputs for contact debouncing. Always de-rate timing with the Microchip timing models for the selected speed grade and temperature corner.

📺

Video and Display Interface Systems

Industrial displays, projection controllers, and video-over-LAN encoders employ the A3PE3000L-FGG324 for scan conversion, frame-buffer addressing, and panel timing generation. The 3M-gate fabric implements multiple video pipelines with FIFO depth from on-chip resources, while 221 I/Os drive panel LVDS pairs, backlight PWM, and touch-controller interfaces from independently banked voltages. Instant-on Flash configuration lets the FPGA be ready before the video source completes enumeration, eliminating missed first-frame artifacts seen with SRAM FPGAs that boot from external devices. Buffer incoming video in external SDRAM/LPDDR; keep 1.5V core for pixel-clock timing closure, and reserve Flash*Freeze for standby between source activity windows.

What is the Microchip A3PE3000L-FGG324?
The A3PE3000L-FGG324 is a ProASIC3L Flash-based FPGA from Microchip Technology (formerly Microsemi/Actel) with 3,000,000 system gates, 221 user I/Os, and a 1.2V to 1.5V core voltage range in a 324-ball FBGA package. According to the Microchip ProASIC3L datasheet (DS50003268), it integrates nonvolatile Flash configuration memory, so it powers up instantly without an external configuration device. DigiKey lists it under FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Array) IC category.
What are the key specifications of A3PE3000L-FGG324 that engineers should know?
The A3PE3000L-FGG324 offers 3,000,000 system gates, 75,264 logic cells, 221 user I/Os, a 1.2V to 1.5V core supply, and maximum operation up to 250 MHz-class timing, all in a 324-ball fine-pitch FBGA. It supports IEEE 1149.1 JTAG boundary scan, Schmitt Trigger single-ended inputs, and weak pull-up/down options. According to the Microchip datasheet DS50003268, its defining feature is Flash*Freeze technology, which drastically reduces static power while retaining FPGA state.
What is the difference between A3PE3000L-FGG324 and A3PE3000L-FGG324I?
The only fundamental difference is the temperature grade: the A3PE3000L-FGG324 is the commercial grade (0C to +70C), while the A3PE3000L-FGG324I is the industrial grade (-40C to +100C/-40C to +85C range per Microchip ordering information). Both share the same die, 324-ball FGG package, pinout, and logic capacity, so the -I variant is a drop-in substitute. Use the industrial part for environments outside 0C to +70C or where extended temperature qualification is required.
What is the difference between A3PE3000L-FGG324 and A3PE3000-FGG324?
The A3PE3000L is the low-power 'L' variant with a 1.2V-capable core and Flash*Freeze technology, while the A3PE3000 (ProASIC3E) is the standard performance family member with a 1.5V core and no Flash*Freeze mode. Both provide 3 million system gates in the same 324-ball FGG footprint with 221 I/Os. Choose the L version for battery-powered or thermally constrained designs; choose the standard part where maximum performance matters and core power is not critical.
Where can I buy A3PE3000L-FGG324 and what does it cost?
The A3PE3000L-FGG324 is available from major distributors including DigiKey (which states 'buy now, ships today') and via Octopart price comparison across 6 distributors. As of 2026-09-02, XAIPART lists tier pricing from $118.50 at quantity 1 down to approximately $86.15 at quantity 1000. Because FPGAs of this density have volatile market pricing, always request a current quote for volume orders before committing a bill of materials.
Is A3PE3000L-FGG324 in stock and what is the lead time?
Stock status varies by distributor: DigiKey's listing indicates the part ships today, and Octopart reports availability across 6 distributors as of the 2026-09-02 data pull. However, Flash-based FPGAs in the 3M-gate class are subject to allocation cycles, so lead times for volume orders can extend well beyond distributor stock. For production quantities beyond a few hundred pieces, confirm lead time directly with the distributor or an authorized Microchip channel before scheduling builds.
What is the best drop-in replacement for A3PE3000L-FGG324?
The best drop-in replacement is A3PE3000L-FGG324I, the industrial-temperature version on the same die and 324-ball FGG package - it is pin-to-pin and functionally identical with wider temperature rating. A3PE3000L-1FGG324I (speed grade -1, industrial) is also drop-in if the -1 timing meets your design. Within the same footprint, A3PE3000L-1FGG324 variants compile the identical fabric. No cross-brand pin-compatible FPGA in a 324-ball FGG package was identified in cross-reference searches.
Is A3PE3000L-FGG324 suitable for battery-powered portable applications?
Yes - the ProASIC3L family was designed specifically for low-power portable use. The device supports a reduced 1.2V core voltage and Microchip's Flash*Freeze technology, which freezes I/O state and stops most dynamic power while retaining the full FPGA configuration and register contents. Combined with its single-chip nonvolatile Flash configuration (no boot current for an external configuration device), the A3PE3000L-FGG324 is well suited to battery instruments, portable medical devices, and other duty-cycled systems.
Where can I download the A3PE3000L-FGG324 datasheet PDF?
The authoritative document is the Microchip 'ProASIC 3L Low Power Flash FPGAs with Flash*Freeze Technology' datasheet, document DS50003268, downloadable from ww1.microchip.com; Octopart also hosts the datasheet PDF for A3PE3000L-FGG324. The full family datasheet is approximately 212 pages and covers DC/AC characteristics, I/O standards, Flash*Freeze operation, and package mechanical drawings including the 324-ball FGG ball map used for this part.
How do I use Flash*Freeze mode on the A3PE3000L?
Flash*Freeze mode is entered by asserting the FLASH_FREEZE pin while the device is configured; per the Microchip ProASIC3L datasheet, the FPGA retains its state and I/O values while drawing only microamp-level static current. Clocks are gated, and the core fabric is isolated, but I/Os can remain active or be frozen depending on configuration. Exiting the mode returns the device to full-speed operation essentially instantly, making it ideal for duty-cycled systems that alternate between active processing and long standby intervals.
What design software do I need for the A3PE3000L-FGG324?
Microchip (formerly Microsemi) designs this family with Libero SoC design suite, which handles synthesis, place-and-route, timing analysis, and Flash programming file generation for ProASIC3L devices. The design flow targets the 3M-gate A3PE3000L fabric and outputs programming data for the on-chip Flash, including security options. Because the configuration memory is on-chip nonvolatile Flash, no external programming PROM is needed - the bitstream is programmed directly via JTAG or at programming houses for volume production.
What is the Microchip (cross-brand from Actel era) equivalent for A3PE3000L-FGG324?
A3PE3000L-FGG324 is already manufactured by Microchip Technology, which acquired Actel/Microsemi, so the Microchip part number IS the current equivalent of the legacy Actel A3PE3000L-FGG324. Cross-reference searches found no pin-compatible FPGA from Xilinx/AMD, Intel/Altera, Lattice, or Gowin in the same 324-ball fine-pitch BGA with Flash fabric - migrating families would require a new footprint, power redesign, and HDL recompilation, so it is not a drop-in exercise.
What operating voltage does the A3PE3000L-FGG324 require?
The A3PE3000L-FGG324 requires three supply domains: a core voltage adjustable between 1.2V and 1.5V (1.5V is the nominal operating supply for this speed grade), plus I/O bank voltages supporting standard levels such as 3.3V, 2.5V, 1.8V, and 1.5V per the I/O standard selected. The commercial-grade device operates from 0C to +70C. A clean, well-decoupled core rail is important; dropping to 1.2V reduces power but lowers maximum achievable frequency.
Can I choose A3PE3000L-FGG324 over a Xilinx Spartan FPGA for a low-power design?
Choose the A3PE3000L-FGG324 when instant-on, single-chip configuration, design security, and standby power are decisive: its on-chip Flash eliminates the external configuration device required by SRAM FPGAs, and Flash*Freeze cuts standby current dramatically. Choose an SRAM FPGA when you need very high I/O counts, high-speed transceivers, or the lowest cost per logic cell. The trade-off is that ProASIC3L logic density per dollar is lower and the fabric speed ceiling (250 MHz-class) is below high-end SRAM families.
Is the A3PE3000L-FGG324 RoHS compliant and lead-free?
The RoHS and lead-free status of this exact ordering code was not captured in the retrieved distributor data and should be verified on the Microchip product page or the DigiKey compliance documents before export-controlled procurement. As a general rule, modern Microchip ProASIC3L FGG packages in standard ordering codes are RoHS-compliant and lead-free, but the -F suffix conventions vary by family generation. Always pull the current Material Declaration from Microchip's compliance portal for the authoritative answer.
Does A3PE3000L-FGG324 require a heatsink?
Generally no. Flash FPGAs in the ProASIC3L family are specifically optimized for low static and dynamic power, and the 324-ball FBGA's ball array provides reasonable thermal spreading into the PCB. At the reduced 1.2V core with moderate toggle rates, junction temperature rise is typically small. However, for dense designs near the 250 MHz-class limits at 1.5V core, run Microchip's power estimation tools with your actual utilization and verify theta-JA against the package mechanical data in DS50003268.

Dados de referência de engenharia para A3PE3000L-FGG324 — comparação, orientação de projeto e informações de conformidade.

Guia de seleção

Choose the A3PE3000L-FGG324 for instant-on, secure, single-chip logic at 3M-gate density when your ambient stays within 0C to +70C and standby power matters - its Flash*Freeze mode and 1.2V core option have no equivalent on the ProASIC3E parts sharing the same FGG324 footprint. Select A3PE3000L-FGG324I for identical silicon with industrial temperature coverage, the safest sourcing hedge on this footprint. Pick A3PE3000L-1FGG324I when your timing closure passes at the slower -1 grade, typically cutting cost and improving availability. Choose A3PE3000-FGG324I or A3PE3000-2FGG324 only if you need ProASIC3E maximum performance and can accept a fixed 1.5V core without Flash*Freeze. All five parts share the 324-ball FGG package, so PCB layout is reusable across the family; only power-tree and timing corners change. No cross-brand pin-compatible alternative exists - plan a recompile and new footprint for any FPGA family migration.

Notas de projeto

Plan three supply rails: VCORE (1.2V or 1.5V), VJTAG (2.5V), and per-bank I/O voltages (3.3V/2.5V/1.8V/1.5V). Selecting VCORE = 1.2V maximizes battery life via Flash*Freeze pairing, but reduces achievable fabric frequency - verify timing closure at the 1.2V corner in Libero before committing. Estimated: a 3M-gate design at 30% utilization and 50 MHz average toggle can cut dynamic core power roughly in half by dropping from 1.5V to 1.2V (power scales with V-squared). Sequence VCORE before or with I/O banks per the Microchip power-up specification in DS50003268.

The 324-ball fine-pitch FGG package requires via-in-pad or dogbone breakout with 0.2 mm laser vias on 0.8 mm ball pitch; plan at least two signal layers for fanout before routing the 221 user I/Os. Place 100 nF ceramic decoupling within 2 mm of ball-side power/ground pairs, one per bank, plus bulk 10 uF per rail. Follow the ball map in the DS50003268 package mechanical drawing - pin A1 must align with the PCB silk dot and the package chamfer to avoid a mirrored assembly.

Do not treat FG324 and FGG324 as interchangeable footprints without checking the mechanical drawing: the fine-pitch FGG ball pitch differs from the standard FG ball pitch, so a land pattern change is required. Also remember Flash*Freeze requires correct configuration of the FLASH_FREEZE I/O in Libero; asserting it while clocks are running unconstrained can violate I/O timing. Finally, the commercial-grade part is rated 0C to +70C - using it below 0C is out of spec; specify A3PE3000L-FGG324I instead.

For differential I/O standards on banked pins, route matched-length pairs with 3W spacing from single-ended signals and reference an unbroken ground plane. Schmitt Trigger inputs (available on A3PE3000L single-ended inputs) should be enabled for slow edges from optocouplers or mechanical contacts to prevent metastability. Simulate JTAG chain loading if more than four devices share TDI/TDO - the 2.5V VJTAG domain drives the full chain current.
