AD9268XCPZ-125 Visão geral

The Analog Devices AD9268XCPZ-125 is a dual-channel, 16-bit, 125 MSPS analog-to-digital converter (ADC) housed in a 64-lead LFCSP-VQ (9x9 mm) package. It features a pipelined architecture, an SNR of 78.2 dBFS at 70 MHz input and 125 MSPS sampling, an SFDR of 88 dBc, and a total power dissipation of 750 mW. The device operates from a 1.8 V analog supply and a 1.8 V to 3.3 V digital supply.

An analog-to-digital converter is a mixed-signal integrated circuit that samples continuous-time analog signals and produces discrete-time digital codes at a rate determined by its sampling clock. Within the broader integrated circuit taxonomy, an ADC sits at the intersection of data acquisition ICs, signal chain components, and mixed-signal processing. The AD9268 belongs to the high-speed pipelined ADC subclass, which uses cascaded gain stages with per-stage digital error correction to achieve high sample rates while maintaining 14-to-16-bit resolution. Pipelined ADCs are the workhorse of communications, software-defined radio, medical imaging, and radar systems, where gigabit-class sample throughput is required.

Key features of the AD9268 include an internal sample-and-hold with very wide input bandwidth, an optional internal reference voltage buffer, programmable input range via the DCS pin, and pin compatibility with the 14-bit AD9258 and the lower-speed AD9251, AD9231, and AD9204 families. The differential analog inputs accept single-ended or differential drive, simplifying front-end filter design. The LVDS-compatible output data interface uses DDR clocking to halve the required output data rate per pin.

The dual ADC architecture supports I/Q sampling in direct-conversion receivers, multi-antenna diversity systems, and medical beamforming front ends. Both channels share a common sampling clock, ensuring deterministic phase alignment between the two channels - critical for coherent signal processing. The pipelined core contributes a fixed latency of approximately 14 clock cycles, which must be accounted for in synchronous system designs.

Typical applications include diversity radio receivers in cellular base stations, software-defined radio platforms, medical ultrasound imaging, portable instrumentation, and multi-channel data acquisition cards. The wide analog input bandwidth allows direct IF sampling without preceding mixer stages, simplifying the overall receiver chain.

When laying out the AD9268XCPZ-125, designers should provide a solid ground plane beneath the exposed pad, route the LVDS output pairs with controlled 100-ohm differential impedance, and decouple each supply pin with a 0.1 microfarad ceramic capacitor placed as close as possible to the package. The exposed pad must be soldered to the PCB ground for both thermal dissipation and electrical reference.

Notas de projeto

Provide a continuous low-impedance ground plane on the layer directly beneath the AD9268XCPZ-125. Route each AVDD1.8 supply pin through its own 0.1 microfarad ceramic decoupling capacitor placed within 2 mm of the pin, with a 10 microfarad bulk capacitor at the supply entry point. Keep digital output traces (DCO, FCO, DxA/B) away from analog inputs and the sampling clock traces to prevent digital noise coupling into the analog front end.

The exposed thermal pad (EPAD) on pin 64 must be soldered to a filled, grounded copper pad on the PCB. Use at least 8 thermal vias arranged on a 1 mm pitch beneath the EPAD to conduct heat into inner ground planes. Per the AD9268 datasheet, this is required for both electrical reference and thermal dissipation - omitting the EPAD solder connection can degrade SNR by 1 to 2 dB and reduce the junction-to-ambient thermal margin.

Drive the differential sampling clock CLK+/CLK- from a low-jitter source such as the AD9516 or AD9517 clock generator. The datasheet specifies the clock input requires a differential amplitude of approximately 1.5 V peak-to-peak centered on a common-mode voltage supplied by the ADC. Maintain 100 ohm differential impedance on the clock trace pair, and route the pair symmetrically with length matching to within 0.5 mm to preserve 50% duty cycle at the ADC clock input.

Estimated: total power at 125 MSPS is 750 mW from the 1.8 V analog rail plus the digital supply current. A linear regulator with at least 20% headroom over the 750 mW figure is recommended to avoid dropout during transients. If switching regulators are used in the system, place them on a separate PCB region to prevent switching noise from coupling into the analog front end.
