MAX132CNG Visão geral
An integrating ADC (also called a dual-slope or multi-slope converter) is a type of data converter which performs analog-to-digital conversion by integrating the input signal over a fixed time window, then de-integrating against a reference voltage. ADCs sit in the broader data converter family inside the data acquisition (DAQ) signal chain: sensor -> signal conditioning -> ADC -> digital processing, where they convert real-world analog signals into digital codes for microcontrollers or processors.
Key features include ±0.006% full-scale-range (FSR) accuracy at 16 conversions per second, 15 µVRMS low-noise performance, and ±2 pA input current over the ±512 mV full-scale input range (2 µV/LSB). The MAX132 draws only 60 µA in normal operation and drops to 1 µA in sleep mode, making it attractive for low-duty-cycle battery-powered measurement systems. The 4-wire serial interface connects easily to microcontrollers, and the chip includes a programmed output port for an external multiplexer and programmable-gain amplifier (PGA).
The internal architecture combines an integrator, integrator-comparator logic, and a serial output shift register with on-chip oscillator and reference buffer. Multi-slope integration reduces conversion time versus classic dual-slope designs while still providing excellent 50 Hz/60 Hz normal-mode rejection, which is critical for industrial weighing and panel-meter applications where mains-frequency noise dominates.
Typical applications include precision weigh scales, panel meters, data-acquisition systems, portable battery-powered instrumentation, temperature measurement with cold-junction compensation, and digital multimeter (DMM) front ends. The wide 0C to +70C commercial operating range and sleep-mode current also suit remote telemetry and data-logger designs.
When designing with this device, ensure the input common-mode voltage stays within the supply rails and place a 10 uF bypass capacitor close to the supply leads. Because the MAX132 has no on-chip digital calibration, system-level zero and full-scale trim with the on-chip OFFSET and REFERENCE trim pins is recommended for best accuracy.

Principais diferenciais
- Multi-slope integrating topology provides inherent 50 Hz/60 Hz mains-noise rejection (vs MAX1270BENG (sigma-delta 12-bit))
- Ultra-low sleep-mode current enables multi-year battery operation (vs MAX1309ECM/V+ (12-bit multi-channel SAR))
- Programmed serial output controls external MUX and PGA without extra GPIO (vs Discrete MUX/PGA designs)
Notas de projeto
The MAX132CNG operates from dual ±5V supplies; for single-rail systems, generate the negative rail with an ICL7660 or equivalent charge pump. Place 10 µF bypass capacitors close to V+ and V- pins and a 0.1 µF ceramic in parallel for high-frequency decoupling. Tie AGDG and DSND at a single star point near the IC to avoid ground-loop noise that could degrade the 15 µVRMS noise floor.
Keep the analog input traces (AIN+, AIN-) short and guarded by analog ground to minimize leakage and pickup. Route digital signals (CS, SCLK, DOUT) away from the integrator and buffer amplifier outputs (INT, BUF) because the integrator capacitor node is high-impedance. Place the external integrator and buffer capacitors on the same side of the board as the IC, with short traces to minimize stray pickup.
Do not exceed the ±512 mV differential input range or the input ESD protection diodes will forward-bias and inject error. Use the OFFSET TRIM (pin 23) and REFERENCE TRIM (pin 24) potentiometers to calibrate system zero and full-scale at production; the multi-slope integration is sensitive to reference drift, so use a low-drift external reference. Avoid running the device above 16 conv/sec if you need the ±0.006% FSR accuracy.
The MAX132CNG's 4-wire serial interface shares its output with programmed MUX/PGA control bits. When reading conversion results, capture all bits in the correct order; do not clock additional cycles inadvertently because the MUX/PGA output bits are interleaved. Use the CS pin to frame each conversion read cleanly and avoid bus contention if multiple SPI devices share the bus.
