PIC16F747-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC16F747-I/ML is an 8-bit CMOS flash microcontroller based on the PIC16 architecture, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of program Flash memory, 368 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM. It executes instructions at a 20 MHz clock rate (200 ns instruction cycle) and integrates 14 channels of 10-bit Analog-to-Digital conversion, three 16-bit timers, three Capture/Compare/PWM (CCP) modules, a synchronous serial port configurable as either 3-wire SPI or 2-wire I2C, a USART for asynchronous serial communication, and two comparators, all packaged in a 44-pin QFN (8x8 mm) with an exposed thermal pad.

What is an 8-bit flash microcontroller? An 8-bit flash microcontroller is a single-chip computer that processes data in 8-bit chunks and stores its program code in non-volatile flash memory that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed. The PIC16F747 belongs to the mid-range PIC16 family, a widely adopted sub-family of microcontrollers that sits within the broader category of microcontrollers (MCU), embedded processors, and integrated circuits. It uses a RISC instruction set with only 35 single-word instructions, simplifying firmware development and reducing code size for typical control tasks.

Key features of the PIC16F747-I/ML include Microchip's nanoWatt Technology for dynamic power management, an operating voltage range of 2.0V to 5.5V, up to 36 digital I/O pins, an internal oscillator, an ICD (In-Circuit Debugger) interface for development, and low-power sleep modes. The 44-pin QFN package with exposed pad provides an excellent thermal path for high-frequency operation while keeping the board footprint compact at 8x8 mm.

The architecture combines a Harvard-style separate code/data bus with a RISC core, providing deterministic interrupt response and predictable execution timing. The 10-bit ADC achieves approximately 12 µs conversion time at full speed, while the USART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), and CCP modules cover most common sensor and actuator interfaces. The wide 2.0V–5.5V VDD range permits battery-powered as well as 5V industrial designs.

Typical applications for this MCU include industrial control panels, sensor signal conditioning, motor control with back-EMF sensing, home automation, white goods and HVAC interfaces, automotive body electronics sub-modules, medical instrumentation, and consumer appliance controllers. Its 36 I/O lines and 14 ADC channels suit multi-signal monitoring tasks.

Designers should note that the QFN exposed pad must be soldered to a sufficient copper pour for thermal dissipation; omitting the pad connection may exceed the junction temperature under sustained I/O switching loads. The ICSP/ICD pins (RB6/RB7) also require isolation resistors during programming to avoid contention with application circuitry.

Aplicações típicas

PIC16F747-I/ML é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Industrial Control Panels, Home Automation Hubs, White Goods and HVAC Interfaces, Sensor Signal Conditioning, Small DC Motor and Stepper Control, Automotive Body Electronics Sub-modules.

🏭

Industrial Control Panels

The PIC16F747-I/ML fits industrial control panel designs where its 36 I/O pins can drive multi-row LED indicators, keypads, and 7-segment displays simultaneously, while the 14 ADC channels read potentiometers, temperature sensors (LM35 or thermistor bridges), and 4-20 mA loop sense resistors. The wide 2.0V-5.5V VDD range accepts both 3.3 V and 5 V backplanes, simplifying supply design. The 20 MHz core runs polling loops fast enough for sub-10 ms panel refresh, and the USART interfaces to a host PLC or HMI over RS-485 via a transceiver. The 44-QFN exposed pad keeps the footprint compact at 8x8 mm - important when the panel PCB is space-constrained behind the operator console.

🧩

Home Automation Hubs

Smart-home hub designs benefit from the PIC16F747-I/ML's combination of three CCP modules (for triac-fired dimmer PWM), USART (for Zigbee or Wi-Fi module host link), and 14 ADC channels for light sensors, temperature, and humidity inputs. The nanoWatt sleep mode drops current below 1 µA between events, which is critical for battery-backed sensors that must survive months on a single cell. The 7 KB flash holds a small RTOS or event-driven state machine, while the 256-byte EEPROM retains user settings through power cycles. The 44-QFN footprint allows the hub PCB to fit behind standard wall boxes without thermal concerns thanks to the exposed thermal pad tied to copper pour.

🏭

White Goods and HVAC Interfaces

Washing-machine, dishwasher, and HVAC user-interface boards typically require multiple segmented LCD or LED drivers, several rotary encoder inputs, and several relay outputs - all roles the PIC16F747-I/ML handles with its 36 I/O pins and three CCP PWM channels for buzzer or backlight dimming. The 10-bit ADC monitors motor current shunt amplifiers and thermistor temperature probes for over-temperature shutdown. The 2.0V-5.5V range tolerates the supply dips common when relays commutate, and nanoWatt modes keep standby consumption within Energy Star limits. The 44-QFN exposed pad dissipates the modest heat from sustained 20 MHz operation with no external heatsink needed.

🔧

Sensor Signal Conditioning

Multi-channel sensor-conditioning front ends use the PIC16F747-I/ML as a small DSP-like controller: each ADC sample runs scaling, offset compensation, and digital filtering in firmware, with results forwarded over SPI or I2C to a system master. The two on-chip comparators provide hardware over-range detection that can wake the MCU from Sleep via interrupt, lowering average current for battery sensor nodes. The PIC16F7X7 family's mature ADC library and proven MPLAB code examples shorten development time for strain-gauge, thermocouple, and pressure-sensor modules. The 8x8 mm QFN footprint fits compact sensor PCBs adjacent to the transducer.

🤖

Small DC Motor and Stepper Control

The PIC16F747-I/ML drives small brushed DC and stepper motors through its three CCP PWM channels feeding H-bridge drivers such as the L298 or DRV8871. Its 20 MHz instruction rate supports field-oriented control loops and microstepping commutation tables, while the 10-bit ADC reads current-sense amplifiers for stall and over-current protection. The USART connects to a host controller or BLDC companion IC for higher-level motion commands. The 44-QFN exposed pad spreads heat from sustained PWM switching, and the 2.0-5.5V VDD simplifies single-Li-ion or USB-powered motion subsystems.

🚗

Automotive Body Electronics Sub-modules

Body controllers for seat adjustment, mirror folding, and lighting sub-modules use the PIC16F747-E/ML (extended temperature variant) for its automotive-grade temperature range and stable 5 V operation directly from the vehicle bus. The 36 I/O pins can drive multiple LED strings via PWM dimming and read end-of-travel limit switches through ADC channels with on-chip comparators providing hardware protection. The CAN-style USART plus an external MCP2515 CAN controller enables OBD-II diagnostics. The QFN-44 exposed pad withstands the under-hood thermal environment when properly soldered with sufficient copper pour.

Notas de projeto

The 44-pin QFN package relies on its exposed pad for primary heat dissipation. Solder the e-pad to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch on the top or bottom PCB layer with multiple thermal vias to the inner ground plane. Without the e-pad connection, sustained 20 MHz operation at 5.5 V may push junction temperature above the -40 to +85 C industrial limit, especially with all 36 I/O pins switching simultaneously. Refer to Microchip application note AN2159 for thermal-via pattern guidance specific to QFN-44 packages.

Place 0.1 µF ceramic decoupling capacitors as close as possible to the AVDD/AVSS analog supply pins (13/14) and the VDD/VSS digital supply pins (23/24). Add a bulk 10 µF tantalum or aluminum-polymer capacitor within 25 mm of the digital supply to suppress transient response to I/O switching. Keep the analog supply trace short and isolated from digital switching currents; consider a ferrite bead between digital VDD and analog AVDD to reduce ADC noise coupling by 8-10 dB.

Do not connect RB6 and RB7 (ICSP clock and data) directly to external circuitry without isolation resistors (typically 4.7 kΩ in series) - the programmer drives these pins during ICD debug and direct shorts can damage both the tool and the MCU. Configure unused I/O pins as outputs driving low rather than inputs, to eliminate interrupt-on-change false triggers and reduce Sleep current by approximately 50 nA per floating input pin.

For ADC sampling above 50 kHz, use the PIC16F747's acquisition-time specification of at least 0.2 µs plus 1.4 µs conversion. Source impedance above 2.5 kΩ reduces effective ADC accuracy because of insufficient charge transfer during the sample window; add an op-amp buffer (such as MCP6002) for high-impedance sensor sources. Use the ADC's internal voltage reference (2.048 V or 4.096 V selectable) for ratiometric measurements and bypass VREF+ with 10 µF plus 0.1 µF ceramic capacitors.
