PIC18F2580-I/ML Visão geral

The Microchip Technology PIC18F2580-I/ML is an 8-bit PIC18F-family CMOS flash microcontroller running up to 40 MHz (10 MIPS), integrating 32 KB of Flash program memory and 1.5 KB of RAM, and packaged in a 28-pin QFN (6x6 mm) with exposed pad. The part is designed for CAN-bus networked embedded systems and includes the ECAN (Enhanced CAN) peripheral alongside a 10-bit A/D converter, nanoWatt power management, and 25 digital I/O pins, with supply voltage specified at 4.2 V to 5.5 V.

An 8-bit PIC microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture RISC MCU based on Microchip's PIC® instruction set, typically delivering 1 instruction per clock cycle (up to 10 MIPS at 40 MHz) and integrating Flash, RAM, EEPROM, timers, ADC and serial peripherals on-chip. The PIC18F family extends the baseline PIC16 line with 16-bit-wide instructions, linear memory, C-friendly architecture, and a richer peripheral set; within the broader taxonomy, PIC18F sits under MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. This hierarchy matters when comparing cross-vendor options, because 8-bit PIC cores are not binary-compatible with ARM Cortex-M or 8051 cores even when pin counts match.

Key features of the PIC18F2580-I/ML include the Enhanced CAN (ECAN) module with multiple acceptance filters, a 10-bit ADC with up to 8 channels (data-dependent), two analog comparators, one 8-bit and three 16-bit timers, an EUSART, MSSP (SPI/I2C), nanoWatt power-saving modes, and an ICD-friendly in-circuit debug interface. The QFN-28 (6x6) exposed-pad package minimizes PCB footprint and lowers thermal resistance via the e-pad, making the part suitable for compact industrial and automotive-body modules.

Typical applications include automotive and industrial CAN nodes (e.g., body controllers, sensor nodes), HVAC and building automation gateways, motor-control slave boards, CAN-to-UART bridges, and low-cost node electronics for distributed control. The 10 MIPS core, combined with deterministic interrupt latency and on-chip ECAN, allows the device to serve as a low-power slave node on a CAN 2.0B bus without an external transceiver controller.

Design considerations include providing a 4.2 V–5.5 V regulated rail, mandatory thermal pad soldering for the QFN e-pad, decoupling with 100 nF plus 10 µF bulk near VDD/VSS pins, and using Microchip's MPLAB X IDE plus an MPLAB ICD programmer for development. NanoWatt modes reduce quiescent current to single-digit µA during sleep, which is critical for CAN nodes that wake only on bus activity.

Aplicações típicas

PIC18F2580-I/ML é adequado para 7 aplicaçãos: Industrial CAN-bus Sensor Node, Automotive Body Control Module, HVAC / Building Automation Gateway, CAN-to-UART Bridge / Protocol Converter, Low-Cost Motor-Control Slave Board, Distributed Embedded Sensor Front-End, Educational / Developer Reference Platform.

🏭

Industrial CAN-bus Sensor Node

The PIC18F2580-I/ML's ECAN (Enhanced CAN 2.0B) peripheral with hardware acceptance filters makes it a natural slave-node controller for industrial CAN 2.0B networks. The 40 MHz / 10 MIPS PIC18 core delivers deterministic interrupt response for time-critical CAN frames, while the 25 mA source/sink per I/O lets the same MCU drive sensor excitation relays and indicator LEDs without external drivers. With 32 KB Flash it can host a full Modbus/CANopen or J1939 stack plus application logic, and the 4.2 V–5.5 V range is directly compatible with industrial 5 V busses. The 28-QFN (6x6) footprint keeps the node PCB below 20 mm x 20 mm, which is critical when stacking dense I/O modules inside a control cabinet.

🚗

Automotive Body Control Module

Body-control ECUs (BCM) for HVAC flaps, lighting clusters and mirror adjusters increasingly rely on low-cost CAN nodes; the PIC18F2580-I/ML serves this role well. Its 10-bit ADC can directly read thermistor or potentiometer signals for climate and seat-position feedback, while the EUSART and MSSP peripherals handle LIN or SPI traffic to companion drivers. The nanoWatt sleep current in the single-digit µA range allows the module to wake only on CAN bus activity, preserving battery during long vehicle storage. Microchip's PIC18F automotive parts are PPAP-supported and the -I grade covers -40 C to +85 C, which matches interior cabin environments. Designers usually pair the device with a TJA1050 or MCP2551 CAN transceiver and a small 5V switching regulator on the BCM PCB.

🏭

HVAC / Building Automation Gateway

In BACnet or Modbus gateways the PIC18F2580-I/ML can act as a sub-MCU that bridges a low-speed building-automation bus (EUSART or SPI) onto a CAN-bus backbone. The 32 KB Flash holds a slim BACnet MS/TP or Modbus RTU stack with comfortable headroom for vendor extensions, and the 1.5 KB RAM accommodates the 32-byte message buffers plus a small TCP/IP-over-CAN stub if needed. The 10-bit ADC is adequate for monitoring thermistor inputs and 4–20 mA loop transducers, while the three 16-bit timers drive PWM-controlled damper and valve actuators without external motor-control ICs. The QFN-28 (6x6) keeps the sub-board small enough to fit inside a thermostat back-plate or a VAV-box controller housing.

🌐

CAN-to-UART Bridge / Protocol Converter

Engineers often need to expose an existing UART-based sensor or actuator on a CAN backbone; the PIC18F2580-I/ML is well-suited to this bridging role. ECAN handles the bus-side arbitration and filtering while the EUSART serves as the UART link to legacy devices at standard baud rates up to 1 Mbps. The 40 MHz core allows the firmware to demultiplex several CAN IDs into distinct UART streams with deterministic latency below 100 µs. With 25 I/O pins the same MCU can also drive status LEDs and provide hardware flow control, eliminating a separate GPIO expander. The QFN-28 (6x6) keeps the bridge board small enough to mount on the back of a DB-9 connector.

⚡

Low-Cost Motor-Control Slave Board

Small BLDC or stepper driver boards on a CAN bus can use the PIC18F2580-I/ML as the slave controller that interprets speed/torque commands. The three 16-bit timers can be re-routed to PWM outputs for FET drivers (with dead-band control via the ECCP module), while the EUSART provides a debug-console link during bring-up. ECAN offloads the deterministic bus protocol from the host processor, freeing the application layer to focus on commutation and current sensing. The 32 KB Flash is sufficient for sensorless trapezoidal commutation algorithms plus a CANopen device profile. The QFN-28 (6x6) and 25 I/O are small enough to integrate next to the gate-driver stage.

🧩

Distributed Embedded Sensor Front-End

For battery-powered remote sensor front-ends, the PIC18F2580-I/ML's nanoWatt sleep modes (sub-µA quiescent) let the device wake only on CAN bus activity or an internal timer, dramatically extending operating life. The 10-bit ADC samples up to 8 analog channels per scan (data-dependent), enough for temperature, humidity and pressure transducer multiplexing. The 1.5 KB RAM buffers small data frames before they are queued onto the ECAN bus, and the 32 KB Flash stores calibration constants and a simple application state machine. Because the part operates from 4.2 V to 5.5 V, a single LiFePO4 cell (3.2 V nominal) plus boost converter, or a small 5 V solar cell with supercap, can power the node. The 28-QFN (6x6) keeps the sensor board small enough to be embedded inside an NEMA-4 enclosure.

🔧

Educational / Developer Reference Platform

The PIC18F2580-I/ML is widely available as part of Microchip's PICDEM CAN development kit ecosystem, making it a popular choice for universities and training programmes. With MPLAB X IDE, MPLAB XC8 compiler and the MPLAB ICD 5 in-circuit debugger, students can program and debug the part out of the box without external tools. The combination of ECAN, EUSART, MSSP and a 10-bit ADC exposes learners to almost every standard embedded peripheral in a single 28-QFN footprint. The deterministic PIC18 interrupt model with hardware-priority levels teaches real-time firmware design. Because the part is RoHS compliant and lead-free, finished student projects can move directly into low-volume commercial products without re-sourcing.

Guia de seleção

Choose the PIC18F2580-I/ML when you need a Microchip PIC18F-grade 8-bit MCU with on-chip ECAN, 32 KB Flash, and a 28-QFN footprint for a 5 V CAN node. For new designs that may grow firmware later, prefer the PIC18F2585-I/ML or PIC18F2680-I/ML because they double the Flash and remain pin-compatible. For nodes that must survive under-hood automotive temperatures, step up to PIC18F2580-E/ML (-40C to +125C). For cost-sensitive CAN sensor nodes that need only 16 KB Flash, drop down to PIC18F2480-I/ML. Cross-brand ARM Cortex-M CAN parts (NXP LPC11C00, STM32F0) require both PCB rework and a full firmware port to a new toolchain, so they are recommended only when an 8-bit PIC core is already off-limits.

Notas de projeto

The 28-QFN (6x6) PIC18F2580-I/ML has an exposed thermal pad on pin 29 that must be soldered to a PCB copper land to meet the datasheet's thermal resistance specification. According to Microchip's package drawing MO-220, a minimum 1:1 land-to-pad ratio with multiple thermal vias to the inner ground plane is recommended. Skip this step and the device will derate above about 60 mA total I/O sink current at 25 C ambient.

Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic capacitor placed within 3 mm of pin 25 and a 10 µF bulk tantalum or polymer cap within 10 mm. The ECAN peripheral draws sharp switching transients during bus arbitration; if the supply droops below 4.2 V the CAN bit-timing can violate the 2.0B specification. For battery-powered CAN nodes, a low-Iq LDO such as Microchip MCP1700 keeps sleep current in the microamp range without compromising CAN regulation.

Route the ECAN TX/RX pair to the MCP2551 or TJA1050 transceiver as a tightly-coupled 50-ohm differential microstrip with matched length to within 5 mm. According to the Microchip ECAN application note, the CAN bus stub length must be kept under 1/10 of the signal rise time to avoid reflections. Keep the CAN trace at least 2 mm away from any clock or switching-power traces to maintain EMC compliance in industrial enclosures.

Do not confuse the /ML suffix (28-QFN 6x6 mm) with /SO (28-SOIC) or /SP (28-SPDIP); the ICSP pinout is identical but the PCB footprint is completely different. The PIC18F2580-I/ML also requires a configuration-bit set (CONFIG1H) that selects the oscillator mode; leaving the default RC oscillator can cause the USB-less ECAN baud rate to drift at temperature. Always program the configuration bits explicitly in your MPLAB X project before flashing firmware.
