TCAN337G Visão geral
A CAN transceiver is the physical layer interface between a CAN controller and the differential twisted-pair bus. It converts the digital transmit and receive signals from the CAN controller into differential bus signals and back, sitting at the bottom of the network stack: transceiver -> physical layer -> CAN controller -> host MCU. The TCAN337G integrates this function in a space-saving SOT-23-8 package.
Key features include CAN FD data rates up to 5 Mbps, ISO 11898-2 compliance, ultra-low power shutdown and standby modes for battery-powered applications, and bus fault protection up to ±58 V. Both SOIC-8 and SOT-23-8 package options are available within the TCAN33x family for design flexibility.
The TCAN337G uses a robust physical layer design for reliable communication in harsh environments. It features a dominant timeout function that prevents bus lock-up caused by a stuck controller, and thermal shutdown protection safeguards the device under fault conditions. Operation is specified over a wide -40C to +125C temperature range, suiting automotive and industrial deployments.
Typical applications include automotive body electronics, industrial automation and building automation networks, and battery management systems using CAN communication, where low standby current and high FD data rates are required.
When designing with the TCAN337G, terminate the bus with 120-ohm resistors at both ends to minimize reflections, and use the standby mode to cut power when the bus is idle, ensuring the CAN controller is configured to wake the transceiver when communication resumes.

Aplicações típicas
TCAN337G é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: Automotive Body Electronics, Industrial Automation Networks, Building Automation, Battery Management Systems, Elevator and Escalator Control, Medical and Diagnostic Equipment.
Automotive Body Electronics
The TCAN337G fits body control modules, door nodes, and lighting controllers that run 3.3-V MCUs and need CAN FD bandwidth for growing diagnostic and firmware-update traffic. Its ±58 V bus fault protection survives load-dump and jump-start transients on 12-V vehicle networks, while -40C to +125C operation covers underhood and exterior zones. In these nodes the transceiver sits between the MCU CAN controller and the twisted pair with 120-ohm end termination; standby mode cuts supply current when the bus is idle, extending battery life in always-connected vehicles.

Industrial Automation Networks
Factory nodes such as motor drives, sensors, and PLC I/O modules use the TCAN337G to bridge 3.3-V controllers onto CANopen or J1939-style networks. The 5 Mbps CAN FD data rate shortens cyclic data exchange times compared to 1 Mbps classical CAN, and the dominant timeout prevents a single crashed node from locking the whole bus. The -40C to +125C range suits cabinets near heat sources, while thermal shutdown protects the device during bus-short faults until the fuse or protection clears.

Building Automation
HVAC controllers, access panels, and energy meters rely on the TCAN337G for low-cost, robust multi-drop networking. Shutdown and standby modes are attractive for battery-backed or energy-harvesting nodes because they cut quiescent draw when the bus is quiet, waking on bus activity or controller command. The SOT-23-8 package fits dense controller boards, and ISO 11898-2 compliance ensures interoperability with the installed base of 3.3-V and 5-V CAN nodes on the same segment.

Battery Management Systems
Battery management systems use the TCAN337G to report cell voltages, temperatures, and state-of-charge to vehicle or inverter controllers over CAN. Its ±58 V bus fault tolerance is valuable near high-voltage battery stacks where wiring faults can put elevated voltages on the communication harness. The 5 Mbps CAN FD rate supports fast pack-level data telemetry during charge and discharge, and the -40C to +125C rating accommodates battery compartment temperature swings.

Elevator and Escalator Control
Elevator controllers, car-top units, and door operators commonly communicate over CAN. The TCAN337G provides the robust physical layer for these long-cable installations: the ISO 11898-2 differential signaling rejects motor-drive noise, the dominant timeout limits outage duration if a car-top node fails, and thermal shutdown guards against repeated short circuits. The compact SOT-23-8 footprint eases retrofits into legacy control cabinets where board space is constrained.

Medical and Diagnostic Equipment
Lab analyzers, infusion pumps, and patient-lift systems use CAN for intra-equipment module communication where the TCAN337G's 3.3-V supply matches modern medical MCU families. Its deterministic fault handling - dominant timeout plus thermal shutdown - supports equipment uptime requirements, and the small SOT-23-8 package fits handheld and cart-based instruments. Low standby current helps meet energy budgets in standby-compliant medical devices awaiting network commands.

Notas de projeto
Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 2 mm of the VCC pin (pin 3), plus a bulk 1 uF-10 uF capacitor near the node. Keep the CANH/CANL traces as a tightly coupled differential pair with matched lengths and route them away from switching regulator nodes to preserve common-mode noise rejection at 5 Mbps CAN FD bit times, which are 8x shorter than at 1 Mbps.
Terminate the bus with 120-ohm resistors at both physical ends only - intermediate stubs should stay under roughly 30 cm at 5 Mbps. At FD arbitration-to-data phase switches, reflections from unterminated stubs cause bit errors that classical 1 Mbps designs tolerated. Verify the topology with an oscilloscope against the ISO 11898-2 recessive/dominant thresholds in the datasheet.
Do not leave the S (mode select) pin floating; tie it via a pull-up or drive it from the MCU so the device enters a defined mode. The dominant timeout will release the bus if TXD sticks low, but the underlying controller fault still must be handled in firmware. Also confirm your TI ordering suffix: DCNR (tape and reel) vs DCNT (small reel) share the same die.
