TLP182GR Visão geral
An optocoupler (also called optoisolator or photocoupler) is a semiconductor isolation device combining an infrared emitter LED and a photodetector inside a single hermetic package. Light, not electrical current, transmits the signal across an isolation barrier, achieving galvanic isolation rated in volts (often kVrms). Phototransistor-output optocouplers like the TLP182 sit in the hierarchy of solid-state relays -> optoisolators -> isolators -> signal-conditioning ICs. They are favored over transformer or capacitor isolation when extremely low propagation delay is not required but cost-effectiveness, bidirectional AC input, and high isolation voltage matter.
Key features of the TLP182 include 3750 Vrms isolation voltage, an operating temperature range of -55C to +125C, collector-emitter voltage of 80V, and a typical propagation delay of a few microseconds. The GR rank bin guarantees CTR between 100% and 300% at IF=5mA, VCE=5V, with other ranks (GB, BL) offering different CTR windows. The SO6 footprint is industry-standard, simplifying layout on multi-channel PLCs and interface boards.
The TLP182 uses a high-speed infrared GaAs LED coupled to a silicon phototransistor through a transparent dielectric isolation barrier. The antiparallel LED arrangement allows both polarities of input current to produce light, supporting AC-line or polarity-agnostic DC switching. The high CTR at low IF reduces drive-current requirements on microcontroller GPIOs.
Typical applications include PLC digital input modules, AC-line detection interfaces, communication interface isolation, programmable logic controller signal isolation, and power-supply feedback loops where the primary-side error amplifier must be isolated from the secondary-side PWM controller. Its wide operating temperature also makes it attractive for industrial and factory-automation equipment.
When designing with the TLP182, ensure the input current IF is kept above the CTR bin threshold (typically >=1mA to 5mA) and below the absolute maximum of 50mA. Add a base-emitter resistor across the phototransistor to improve switching speed and reduce leakage-induced false triggers, and provide adequate creepage/clearance on the PCB between primary and secondary copper pours.

Aplicações típicas
TLP182GR é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: PLC Digital Input Module, AC Line Voltage Detection, Communication Interface Isolation, Switch-Mode Power Supply Feedback, Industrial Sensor Signal Isolation, Home Appliance Control Board.
PLC Digital Input Module
The TLP182GR is widely used in 24V PLC digital-input modules where it provides 3750 Vrms reinforced isolation between field-side wiring and the logic-side microcontroller. The antiparallel LED input supports both AC and DC field wiring, simplifying the input stage to a single current-limiting resistor and the optocoupler. Its 100% to 300% CTR (GR rank) at IF=5mA ensures reliable logic-level output across the industrial -25C to +70C ambient. Compared with a transformer-isolated input the TLP182GR saves PCB area and offers lower BOM cost, while still meeting IEC 61131-2 input-isolation requirements.
Recomendado
AC Line Voltage Detection
The TLP182GR is well suited for zero-crossing or presence detection on 110V/220V AC mains lines. Its antiparallel LED structure conducts on both half-cycles of the AC waveform, producing a pulsed output at twice the line frequency. The 80V VCEO comfortably exceeds the rectified AC peak (about 311V for 220V) when the phototransistor is wired with appropriate collector clamping. Using the TLP182GR replaces a discrete bridge rectifier plus DC optocoupler pair, reducing parts count and assembly cost in white-goods and appliance control boards.
Recomendado
Communication Interface Isolation
The TLP182GR provides galvanic isolation for low-speed serial interfaces such as RS-232 handshaking lines, UART flow control, or I2C buses that require noise immunity between two ground domains. With 3750 Vrms isolation and propagation delays in the microsecond range, the TLP182GR cleanly bridges ground-potential differences in factory-automation networks. Its wide -55C to +125C operating range makes it suitable for outdoor telecom and industrial routers, where temperature cycling would otherwise degrade isolation components. The SO6 footprint matches the pin pitch of standard 4-pin SO transceiver-IC breakout boards.

Switch-Mode Power Supply Feedback
The TLP182GR is commonly used as the isolation element in primary-to-secondary feedback paths of AC-DC and DC-DC switch-mode power supplies. The optocoupler transmits the error-amplifier output from the secondary-side TL431 reference back to the primary-side PWM controller, while the 3750 Vrms barrier protects users from mains voltages. The GR-rank CTR window of 100% to 300% provides the predictable gain needed for loop compensation. Compared with digital isolators, the TLP182GR is significantly lower cost at modest data rates, making it the industry default for sub-100W SMPS designs.

Industrial Sensor Signal Isolation
The TLP182GR isolates analog and digital sensor outputs - such as proximity sensors, limit switches, and encoder channels - from the host controller in noisy industrial environments. Its 3750 Vrms isolation protects downstream 3.3V microcontroller GPIOs from ground loops and ESD events that propagate through long sensor cables. With AC-input capability, it can also isolate sensors driven by AC excitation (such as inductive proximity switches). The wide operating temperature range and Toshiba ruggedness make the TLP182GR a long-term favorite for factory-floor PLCs and motor-control inverters.
Recomendado
Home Appliance Control Board
The TLP182GR is used in washing machines, refrigerators, microwave ovens, and air-conditioner control boards to interface the low-voltage logic MCU with the 110/220V AC mains - for relay driving, heater control, and triac triggering feedback. The AC-input optocoupler conducts on both halves of the AC waveform, simplifying the interface circuit. Its compact SO6 package fits dense control boards where every square millimeter counts. With an operating temperature up to +125C, it tolerates the warm interior of appliance enclosures without derating.

Notas de projeto
When driving the TLP182GR from a microcontroller GPIO, ensure the input forward current IF stays between 5mA and 20mA for guaranteed CTR. Driving below 1mA risks the phototransistor falling out of saturation, producing unreliable logic-level output. Add a base-to-emitter resistor (typically 1M ohm to 10M ohm) across the phototransistor to discharge leakage and speed up turn-off; without it the optocoupler may remain partially on after the LED is switched off.
Maintain at least 8mm creepage and clearance between primary-side copper (LED pins 1-3) and secondary-side copper (transistor pins 4-6) on the PCB to preserve the 3750 Vrms isolation rating. Avoid routing signal traces under the SO6 body and remove solder mask opening beneath the package to prevent contamination of the isolation barrier. Place the input current-limiting resistor as close to pin 2 as possible to minimize parasitic inductance that could spike the LED forward voltage.
For AC-line zero-cross detection, place a small RC snubber (100 ohm + 100pF) across the phototransistor collector-emitter to limit dv/dt-induced false turn-on. The TLP182GR's AC input is bidirectional so the output pulse train reflects the rectified line frequency; debounce the logic-side input with a 1ms to 10ms software filter to reject line-noise transients. For PLC inputs add a 100nF capacitor across the LED pins to filter HF noise from long field-side cables.
