ATMEGA8535L-8PI Обзор

The Microchip Technology ATMEGA8535L-8PI is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB self-programming Flash program memory, 512 bytes SRAM, 512 bytes EEPROM, an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, and an operating frequency of up to 8 MHz, packaged in a 40-pin PDIP (0.600 in, 15.24 mm) with 32 general-purpose I/O lines.

An 8-bit AVR microcontroller is a Harvard-architecture RISC processor in which program memory and data memory are accessed on separate buses, allowing most of its 130 powerful instructions to execute in a single clock cycle. Within the power-management hierarchy, a microcontroller unit (MCU) integrates CPU, memory, timers, and communication peripherals on one die, making it the central control element of an embedded system.

Key features include the AVR advanced RISC core with 32 general-purpose working registers delivering up to 16 MIPS throughput at 16 MHz (8 MIPS at the 8 MHz speed grade of the L variant), In-System Programmable (ISP) Flash with Read-While-Write capability, and a wide 2.7V to 5.5V operating voltage range unique to the ATmega8535L low-voltage grade. Peripheral integration covers three flexible Timer/Counters with compare modes, a byte-oriented Two-wire Serial Interface (I2C/TWI), a programmable serial USART, and an SPI interface for 544-byte SRAM expansion. Six software-selectable power-saving sleep modes (Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, Standby, Extended Standby) enable battery-operated designs.

The 8-channel 10-bit successive-approximation ADC supports single-ended and differential conversions, useful for direct analog sensor acquisition. The JTAG-less, low-cost design targets classic through-hole prototyping on 0.600 in DIP sockets.

Typical applications include industrial control and automation, motor and HVAC control boards, sensor data acquisition nodes, and educational/hobby embedded platforms where DIP packages simplify prototyping and in-circuit programming.

Design consideration: the ATmega8535L speed grade limits operation to 0-8 MHz and 2.7-5.5V; for 16 MHz 4.5-5.5V operation choose the ATMEGA8535-16P grade instead, keeping the identical footprint.

Типичное применение

ATMEGA8535L-8PI подходит для 6 применениеs: Industrial Control and Automation, Sensor Data Acquisition, Embedded Education and Prototyping, Motor and HVAC Control, Serial Communication Gateways, Security and Access Control Panels.

🏭

Industrial Control and Automation

The ATMEGA8535L-8PI fits industrial control boards that need deterministic 8-bit control, multiple communication buses, and moderate analog acquisition in one through-hole device. Its three Timer/Counters with compare modes directly generate PWM for actuator and heater control, while the byte-oriented TWI (I2C) and SPI interfaces connect panel displays and EEPROM expansion. The industrial -40C to +85C temperature range suits factory-floor enclosures. Operating from 2.7V to 5.5V, it tolerates relaxed 3.3V or 5V logic rails. Designers typically clock it from an 8 MHz crystal via XTAL1/XTAL2, giving one MIPS per MHz; heavier signal-processing loads should be offloaded to hardware timers rather than software loops to stay within the 8 MHz budget.

🧩

Sensor Data Acquisition

The integrated 8-channel 10-bit successive-approximation ADC is the core reason the ATMEGA8535L-8PI suits multi-sensor acquisition nodes. Up to eight single-ended inputs on PORTA (PA0-PA7) sample temperature, pressure, and level signals at moderate rates, and differential modes cancel common-mode noise on bridge sensors such as strain gauges. The ADC Noise Reduction sleep mode silences the CPU clock during conversions, improving effective noise-free resolution. AVCC on pin 30 must be tied to a clean analog supply and AREF (pin 32) decoupled for rated accuracy. At 8 MHz the L grade provides ample sampling bandwidth for slow physical-process monitoring while consuming less dynamic power than 16 MHz grades.

🔧

Embedded Education and Prototyping

The 0.600 in 40-pin PDIP package is the defining advantage for education: the ATMEGA8535L-8PI plugs into standard DIP sockets and breadboard adapters, can be removed for external ISP programming, and tolerates repeated insertion cycles that damage fine-pitch SMD parts. Its 2.7V to 5.5V range lets students experiment with both 3.3V and 5V logic without level shifting, and 32 general-purpose I/O lines support LED matrices, keypads, LCDs, and UART terminal exercises in a single curriculum. The widely documented AVR architecture (130 mostly single-cycle instructions, 32 working registers) remains a staple of embedded-systems teaching, and ISP Flash enables reprogramming without removing the chip from the target board.

⚡

Motor and HVAC Control

For fan, pump, and HVAC damper control, the ATMEGA8535L-8PI combines PWM generation from its Timer/Counters with ADC feedback from current-sense or NTC inputs, closing the control loop in firmware with proportional-integral routines. The TWI bus reads digital temperature sensors on the same two wires used for configuration EEPROMs, reducing harness complexity in distributed HVAC units. Its wide 2.7V to 5.5V supply tolerates sagging unregulated rails during motor start transients. A practical consideration is PCB-level protection: flyback from inductive loads must be clamped away from the I/O pins, and the ADC sampling instant should be synchronized away from PWM switching edges to avoid rail noise corrupting readings.

🌐

Serial Communication Gateways

With hardware UART/USART, TWI (I2C), and SPI operating concurrently, the ATMEGA8535L-8PI serves as a protocol bridge in legacy equipment: for example, converting a modbus-style UART link from a host controller into TWI for slave peripherals, or buffering data into SPI serial memories for local logging. The SPI also expands external 544-byte SRAM when 512 bytes of internal RAM proves tight for message buffers. Running at 8 MIPS, it comfortably sustains 38.4 kbaud UART traffic with interrupt-driven ring buffers, though budgets should reserve headroom for CRC computation. Sleep modes allow the gateway to idle at microamp-level current between transactions in battery-backed installations.

🎥

Security and Access Control Panels

Access-control and small alarm panels benefit from the ATMEGA8535L-8PI balance of I/O count, EEPROM, and sleep modes. The 32 GPIO lines scan keypads, drive relays, and read door sensors; the 512-byte EEPROM stores calibration data, user codes, and tamper counters through power cycles without external NVRAM. Power-down and Standby sleep modes support mains-failure battery operation, waking via external interrupts on PORTD level changes. The 8 MHz clock keeps response latency to keypad presses well below perceptible thresholds. Because these panels often run for a decade, the mature, long-documented ATmega8535 family - with its extensive errata history and stable datasheet (Microchip document 2502) - provides predictable behavior for compliance-critical designs.

What are the key specifications of ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI is an 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller with 8KB self-programming Flash (4K x 16), 512 bytes SRAM, 512 bytes EEPROM, and an 8-channel 10-bit ADC. It runs at up to 8 MHz from 2.7V to 5.5V and integrates I2C (TWI), SPI, and UART/USART interfaces plus three timers. It is packaged in a 40-pin PDIP with 32 general-purpose I/O lines, according to the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet.
What is the operating voltage of ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI operates from 2.7V to 5.5V, the wide low-voltage range of the L speed grade. By contrast, the standard ATmega8535 grade is limited to 4.5V to 5.5V. The suffix letter matters: the L grade trades maximum clock speed (8 MHz versus 16 MHz) for this wider voltage window, making it suitable for 3.3V-tolerant battery and industrial low-voltage rails.
What is the maximum clock speed of ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI is speed-graded for 0 MHz to 8 MHz operation, delivering up to 8 MIPS because most of the 130 AVR instructions execute in a single clock cycle. If your design requires 16 MHz and up to 16 MIPS throughput, you need the non-L grade ATMEGA8535-16PJ, which shares the same 40-pin PDIP footprint and 4.5V to 5.5V supply.
What is the best drop-in replacement for ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
The closest drop-in replacement is the ATMEGA8535-16PJ, the 16 MHz industrial-grade version in the same 40-pin PDIP footprint; it is pin-to-pin compatible and requires only a 4.5V to 5.5V supply. For 5V-only designs this is the standard migration path. The ATMEGA8535L-8PU is the non-RoHS-finish sibling of this exact part, and the AT90S8535-8PI is the earlier generation predecessor that shares the pinout.
ATMEGA8535L-8PI vs ATMEGA16-16PU - which is better for industrial sensor nodes?
For industrial sensor nodes, the ATMEGA16-16PU generally offers better headroom: it is pin-compatible in 40-PDIP, adds 1KB SRAM (versus 512 bytes) and a JTAG debug port, and runs at 16 MHz. However, its operating range is 4.5V to 5.5V, so if your system runs on 3.3V or mixed voltages, the ATMEGA8535L-8PI with its 2.7V to 5.5V range and 8 MHz grade is the safer choice. Verify your clock speed and supply rail before selecting.
What is the difference between ATMEGA8535L-8PI and ATMEGA8535-16PI?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI is the low-voltage, low-speed grade: 2.7V to 5.5V and 0 to 8 MHz. The ATMEGA8535-16PI runs 4.5V to 5.5V at up to 16 MHz. Flash (8KB), SRAM (512B), EEPROM (512B), ADC (8-channel 10-bit), peripherals, and the 40-pin PDIP footprint are identical, so the two are hardware drop-in substitutes; only your supply rail and clock frequency requirements decide which grade to use.
When should I choose ATMEGA8535L-8PI over ATMEGA32A-PU?
Choose the ATMEGA8535L-8PI when you need 2.7V to 5.5V operation, true EEPROM at a known 512-byte size, or you are maintaining a legacy design already qualified for the ATmega8535 register map. Choose the ATMEGA32A-PU when you need more memory: it offers 32KB Flash and 2KB SRAM in the same 40-pin PDIP footprint, though its register map and some peripheral placements differ, so firmware changes are required.
Can ATMEGA8515-16PI replace ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
Partially. The ATMEGA8515-16PI is pin-compatible in 40-PDIP and shares the AVR core, timers, USART, TWI, and SPI, but it lacks the 8-channel 10-bit ADC of the ATmega8535. If your design does not use the internal ADC (external ADC or digital sensors only), it can serve as a drop-in hardware substitute; otherwise an external ADC converter is required. Both need 4.5V to 5.5V for the 16 MHz grade.
Where to download the ATMEGA8535L-8PI datasheet PDF?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI datasheet is published by Microchip Technology as the ATmega8535 complete datasheet, available as a PDF on the Microchip website under the ATmega8535 product page, and directly at ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/2502S.pdf. The same document covers all package and speed grades of the family, including PDIP, TQFP, PLCC, and QFN/MLF options.
Where can I find the ATMEGA8535L-8PI pinout?
The ATMEGA8535L-8PI pinout is on the first pages of the Microchip ATmega8535 datasheet PDF for the 40-pin PDIP package. Pins 1 through 8 are PORTB (PB0-PB7), pin 9 is RESET, pins 10-11 are VCC/GND, pins 12-13 are XTAL2/XTAL1, pins 14-21 are PORTD (PD0-PD7), pins 22-29 are PORTC (PC0-PC7), pin 30 is AVCC, pin 32 is AREF, and pins 33-40 are PORTA (PA0-PA7).
What is the price of ATMEGA8535L-8PI?
Pricing for the ATMEGA8535L-8PI on XAIPART starts at approximately USD 6.20 for 1 piece as of 2026-09-19, dropping to about USD 5.58 at 10 pieces, USD 4.96 at 100 pieces, and USD 3.72 at 1000 pieces. Distributor inventory varies; compare DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart listings, which collectively report four to five stocking distributors for this MPN, before committing to volume.
Where to buy ATMEGA8535L-8PI online?
You can buy the ATMEGA8535L-8PI from XAIPART on this page, or compare stock across authorized distributors such as DigiKey (product ID 522029) and Mouser, plus marketplaces aggregated on Octopart, which tracks about four distributors for this part. Heisener has reported stock of roughly 3,920 pieces with a request-quote model. For volume purchases, MicrochipDirect offers factory-direct ordering with lead-time visibility.
Is ATMEGA8535L-8PI in stock and what is the lead time?
Stock varies by distributor for this mature AVR part: DigiKey and Mouser typically list small quantity availability, while broker channels such as Heisener have reported multi-thousand-piece lots. Lead time at authorized distributors is usually in stock or short for small quantities; factory lead time through MicrochipDirect for volume orders can extend to several weeks and should be confirmed at order time. Always verify real-time availability as of your purchase date.
Is ATMEGA8535L-8PI RoHS compliant and lead-free?
Yes. The I suffix in ATMEGA8535L-8PI denotes the industrial temperature range, and the current production suffix indicates lead-free, RoHS-compliant matte-tin plating. The otherwise identical ATMEGA8535L-8PU variant carries the older leaded (tin-lead) finish and is retained for legacy exemption markets only. Always confirm the compliance certificate (Certificate of Conformance) with your supplier, as finish suffixes matter for EU RoHS and REACH declarations.
Is ATMEGA8535L-8PI the same as ATMEGA8535L-8PU?
Electrically and functionally yes, and they are footprint-identical: both are 8 MHz, 2.7V to 5.5V, 8KB Flash ATmega8535L devices in 40-pin PDIP. The difference is the plating finish: PI uses a lead-free (RoHS) finish, while PU uses the legacy tin-lead finish intended for grandfathered/legacy-exemption applications. For new RoHS-restricted designs, specify the PI suffix.
Is ATMEGA8535L-8PI suitable for a low-power battery application?
Yes, within limits. The ATmega8535L offers six software-selectable sleep modes including Power-down and Extended Standby, and its 2.7V to 5.5V low-voltage grade suits 3V battery stacks. Power-down mode stops the CPU and most clocks while retaining register and SRAM contents. For extreme battery budgets, evaluate newer AVR cores such as the ATmega328P with lower active current per MIPS, but the ATmega8535L remains workable for sleep-dominated duty cycles.

Справочные инженерные данные для ATMEGA8535L-8PI — сравнение, рекомендации по проектированию и информация о соответствии.

Руководство по выбору

Choose ATMEGA8535L-8PI when your design runs at or below 8 MHz, needs 2.7V-5.5V supply flexibility, and requires the ATmega8535 register map, ISP Flash, TWI/SPI/USART, and the 8-channel 10-bit ADC in a breadboardable DIP-40. Choose ATMEGA8535-16PJ for 5V-only boards needing 16 MIPS. Choose ATMEGA8535L-8PU only for legacy-exemption tin-lead builds. Choose ATMEGA16-16PU if you need JTAG debugging and 1KB SRAM and can accept a 5V rail. Choose ATMEGA32A-PU when memory is the constraint and a firmware port is acceptable. Avoid cross-brand substitutes such as the PIC16C76-20/P: despite the same 40-pin DIP outline, it is not pin-compatible with the AVR port assignment. All listed AVR alternatives share the 40-PDIP footprint, allowing PCB and socket reuse across the migration path.

Заметки по проектированию

Connect VCC (pin 10) and AVCC (pin 30) to a decoupled 2.7V-5.5V rail. Even when the ADC is unused, Microchip requires AVCC to be tied to VCC through a low-pass filter (e.g., 10 uH inductor or ferrite bead plus 0.1 uF capacitor) to guarantee specified device operation. Decouple each supply pin with 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors placed within a few millimeters of the pins, and add 4.7 uF to 10 uF of bulk capacitance near the socket.

Keep the analog reference (AREF, pin 32) clean: connect a 0.1 uF capacitor from AREF to ground and never drive it with a low-impedance source without a series resistor, or the internal reference can be damaged. Route ADC input traces on PORTA away from XTAL and PWM output traces (PD4/PD5/PD7). Ground pin 31 (GND) carries ADC return current - give it a solid, short connection to the analog ground plane rather than daisy-chaining to the digital ground.

The L speed grade is hard-limited to 0-8 MHz: overclocking the ATMEGA8535L-8PI to 16 MHz violates the datasheet speed/voltage derating and causes unreliable execution. Fuse configuration is also the most common field failure - setting SPIEN off or selecting an external clock source without a clock bricks the device; keep a parallel programmer or high-voltage parallel programmer available for fuse recovery. Finally, RESET (pin 9) needs a 10 kOhm pull-up for noise immunity on breadboarded designs.

Estimated: at 5.5V and 8 MHz with all 32 I/O pins sourcing 20 mA worst case (not a realistic load), dissipation remains under 0.5 W, and the 40-PDIP DIP-40 plastic package dissipates this comfortably in still air without a heatsink. In sleep-dominated designs (Power-down mode) average dissipation is in the milliwatt range. No thermal management is required for typical use; simply avoid continuous short-circuit currents on I/O pins, which are internally limited but thermally destructive if sustained.
