STM32F107RCT6 Présentation
What is a microcontroller (MCU)? A microcontroller is a compact integrated circuit that combines a processor, memory (Flash and SRAM), and programmable peripherals on a single chip. The STM32F107RCT6 belongs to STMicroelectronics' STM32F1 connectivity line family, which sits inside the broader STM32 32-bit ARM Cortex-M portfolio. The hierarchy is: microcontroller -> 32-bit MCU -> ARM Cortex-M MCU -> STM32 family -> STM32F1 series -> connectivity line. This positioning makes the STM32F107RCT6 well suited to embedded designs that demand both real-time control and wired connectivity.
Key features include 1.25 DMIPS/MHz performance, 10/100 Mbps Ethernet MAC with MII/RMII, USB 2.0 OTG full-speed, two CAN 2.0B active controllers, three 12-bit ADCs (1 us conversion, up to 16 channels), two 12-bit DACs, and advanced-control timers with PWM resolutions as fine as 6.25 ns. Supply range is 2.0 V to 3.6 V with -40 C to +85 C operating temperature. Low-power modes include Sleep, Stop, and Standby, and the device adds a nested vectored interrupt controller (NVIC), memory protection unit (MPU), real-time clock (RTC), and CRC calculation unit.
From a technical depth perspective, the STM32F107RCT6 is built on a 90 nm process node and uses a 12-channel DMA controller with independent streams. The 256 KB Flash is split into 4 x 64 KB sectors supporting read-while-write (RWW), enabling in-field firmware updates without halting the core. The Ethernet MAC requires an external PHY and a magnetics-isolated RJ-45, and the USB OTG controller supports both host and device roles. Compared with the lower-density STM32F105 sibling, the STM32F107 specifically adds the Ethernet MAC; compared with the STM32F103 mainstream line, the F107 adds CAN and Ethernet while preserving the same Cortex-M3 baseline.
Typical applications include industrial PLC and motor-control boards, Ethernet-to-CAN or Ethernet-to-UART protocol gateways, smart metering, medical monitoring, point-of-sale terminals, and home/building automation hubs. The combination of Ethernet + USB OTG + dual CAN makes the STM32F107RCT6 a single-chip connectivity bridge for protocols such as Modbus TCP, CANopen, and USB CDC.
When designing with this device, provide one 100 nF decoupling capacitor adjacent to each VDD pin plus a 4.7 uF bulk capacitor. Tie VDDA to a filtered analog rail and decouple VREF+ with 1 uF. For Ethernet, use a magnetics module with centre-tap termination; for USB OTG, add the 1.5 kohm pull-up on DP+ for full-speed device mode. Configure BOOT0 correctly for the desired boot source and place a 100 nF capacitor on NRST for reliable reset.

Applications typiques
STM32F107RCT6 convient pour 7 applications: Industrial Ethernet Gateway, PLC and Motor Control Board, Smart Meter and Energy Monitoring, Medical Monitoring Device, Home and Building Automation Hub, Point-of-Sale Terminal, USB Device/CDC Black Box Consumer Dongle.
Industrial Ethernet Gateway
The STM32F107RCT6's integrated 10/100 Ethernet MAC with MII/RMII plus dual CAN 2.0B controllers makes it an ideal single-chip bridge between Ethernet (Modbus TCP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP) and CAN/CANopen fieldbuses. The Cortex-M3 at 72 MHz provides ample headroom to run a TCP/IP stack (lwIP) while simultaneously servicing CAN messages at 1 Mbit/s. Designers connect the MAC to an external PHY (e.g. DP83848) with magnetics-isolated RJ-45 and use the DMA-driven MAC descriptors to keep CPU usage low. Compared with an MCU + external Ethernet controller, the F107 reduces BOM cost by roughly $2 and shrinks PCB area.
Recommandé
PLC and Motor Control Board
The STM32F107RCT6's advanced-control timers with 6.25 ns PWM resolution, three 12-bit ADCs with 1 us conversion, and dual CAN interfaces suit compact PLCs and small motor drives. The 256 KB Flash accommodates IEC 61131-3 runtime or proprietary control firmware plus a CANopen stack. The Cortex-M3 at 72 MHz is sufficient for field-oriented control (FOC) of small PMSM motors below 1 kW when used with the ST FOC firmware library. Designers should budget 100 nF decoupling per VDD pin and isolate analog VDDA per the datasheet recommendation.
Recommandé
Smart Meter and Energy Monitoring
The STM32F107RCT6's three 12-bit ADCs, dual 12-bit DACs, RTC with calendar, and low-power Stop/Standby modes support smart electricity/water/gas meter designs with battery backup. The Ethernet MAC and USB OTG enable AMR (automatic meter reading) gateways that aggregate local meter data over RS-485 and forward to cloud via Ethernet or USB CDC. Standby current typically below 10 uA preserves battery life. Designers must follow the datasheet's analog supply routing to achieve the noise performance required for accurate metrology at class 0.5 or better.
Recommandé
Medical Monitoring Device
The STM32F107RCT6 is well suited to patient monitoring peripherals such as blood-pressure cuffs, pulse-oximetry modules, and multi-parameter front-end boards. The USB OTG full-speed supports both device mode for PC connectivity and host mode for USB memory logging. The three 12-bit ADCs at 1 us conversion sample bioelectric signals with adequate dynamic range for diagnostic-grade peripherals. The 256 KB Flash supports RTOS (FreeRTOS) plus protocol libraries. Note that for FDA-cleared designs, the part is not AEC-Q100 qualified; designers should validate the operating envelope per IEC 60601-1.
Recommandé
Home and Building Automation Hub
The STM32F107RCT6 combines Ethernet, USB OTG, dual CAN, and multiple USARTs to act as a central hub bridging KNX or CAN-based building networks with IP backbones. The Cortex-M3 at 72 MHz runs a small embedded Linux-equivalent stack (lwIP + mbedTLS) and concurrently drives a KNX or BACnet stack. The 64 KB SRAM is sufficient for TLS handshakes when used with a session-resumption strategy. Compared with a Raspberry Pi-class hub, the F107 reduces idle power by an order of magnitude and enables fanless designs.
Recommandé
Point-of-Sale Terminal
The STM32F107RCT6's USB OTG host mode supports USB peripherals (barcode scanners, receipt printers), while the SPI/I2C buses drive secure element chips and the Ethernet MAC connects to back-office networks. The 256 KB Flash holds application firmware plus TLS libraries for payment-grade security. The 72 MHz Cortex-M3 delivers sufficient throughput to manage multi-second TLS handshakes without user-perceived latency. The LQFP-64 package supports industrial temperature grade (-40 C to +85 C) suitable for retail floor environments.
Recommandé
USB Device/CDC Black Box Consumer Dongle
The STM32F107RCT6's USB 2.0 OTG full-speed and 256 KB Flash suit small consumer dongles that expose a USB CDC virtual COM port, a HID interface, or a custom bulk endpoint. The Cortex-M3 at 72 MHz provides enough throughput for USB high-bandwidth streaming at 12 Mbps. The 64-pin LQFP keeps the PCB footprint under 100 mm^2. The part's industrial temperature range (-40 C to +85 C) supports outdoor or automotive cabin use. The same die is available in the LQFP-100 variant (F107VCT6) when more GPIOs are required.

Notes de conception
Decouple each VDD pin with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the pin, plus one 4.7 uF bulk capacitor per VDD domain. Tie VDDA to a filtered 3.3 V rail derived from VDD through a ferrite bead, and decouple VREF+ with a 1 uF X7R ceramic. Per the ST datasheet, VDDA must never exceed VDD by more than 0.3 V, or the analog subsystem can latch up. Estimated: at 72 MHz with all peripherals enabled, core current is around 50 mA, so budget a regulator capable of 100 mA continuous with adequate thermal headroom.
Route the HSE oscillator traces (OSC_IN/OSC_OUT) as short, symmetric differential traces with a ground guard ring. Keep high-current digital switching traces (PWM outputs, USB DP/DM) at least 5 mm away from the HSE crystal. For Ethernet RMII, route the 50 MHz reference clock with 50 ohm controlled impedance and length-match it to the data lines within 5 mm. The USB DP/DM pair requires 90 ohm differential impedance; keep the pair length-matched within 0.5 mm and route over an unbroken reference ground plane.
Do not leave BOOT0 floating. The STM32F107RCT6 samples BOOT0 at reset to choose between boot-from-Flash and boot-from-system memory (USART bootloader). For normal operation, tie BOOT0 to ground through a 10 kohm resistor; add a test point or button to drive BOOT0 high for in-system programming. Also confirm the NRST reset pin has a 100 nF capacitor and a 10 kohm pull-up, otherwise the part can experience partial resets that leave peripherals in indeterminate states. Finally, the VBAT pin (when used with a backup battery) must be decoupled with a 100 nF capacitor and protected against reverse polarity.
Estimated: the LQFP-64 package has a typical theta_JA around 50 C/W on a 2-layer JEDEC test PCB (4-layer boards typically achieve 30-40 C/W). At full 72 MHz operation with both CAN buses and Ethernet active, internal dissipation is approximately 0.3-0.4 W, producing a 15-25 C junction rise above ambient. This is well within the 125 C maximum junction temperature. For continuous 85 C ambient operation, design conservatively and validate with a thermocouple on the package top in worst-case firmware loops.
For the Ethernet RMII interface, length-match the 50 MHz reference clock trace to the data lines (RMII_CRS_DV, RMII_RXD0, RMII_RXD1, RMII_TXD0, RMII_TXD1, RMII_TX_EN) and place a 22 ohm series source-termination resistor on each output from the MCU. For USB 2.0 full-speed DP/DM, keep the differential pair length-matched within 0.5 mm and route over a continuous ground plane; place the 1.5 kohm pull-up on DP+ as close to the MCU as possible to avoid signal-integrity issues at enumeration.
Informations de conformité
RoHS and REACH compliance per ST product page. Not AEC-Q100 qualified (industrial temperature grade only, -40 C to +85 C); for automotive designs choose an AEC-Q100-qualified STM32 part.
