ATSAMD20J15B-AUT Overview

The Microchip Technology ATSAMD20J15B-AUT is an ARM Cortex-M0+ based 32-bit microcontroller from the SAM D20J family, featuring 32KB of Flash and 4KB of SRAM, running at up to 48 MHz, and housed in a 64-pin TQFP-EP (10x10 mm) package with exposed thermal pad. Headline parameters: 32 KB Flash, 4 KB SRAM, 48 MHz Cortex-M0+ core, 64-pin TQFP-EP. The part operates from a single 1.62V to 3.63V supply and includes a 12-bit ADC, 10-bit DAC, and 256-channel Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC).

A Cortex-M0+ microcontroller is a 32-bit ARM processor core optimized for ultra-low-power embedded applications. The M0+ architecture is the smallest and most energy-efficient member of the ARM Cortex-M family, providing Thumb-2 instruction set compatibility and deterministic interrupt response. The ATSAMD20J15B-AUT integrates this core with Microchip's proprietary Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) for capacitive touch sensing, on-chip analog peripherals, and SERCOM (Serial Communication Interface) modules that are reconfigurable as UART, SPI, or I2C. The hierarchy: Cortex-M0+ -> ARM 32-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor.

Key differentiating specifications include six SERCOM communication interfaces, six timer/counters, a real-time clock (RTC), and full-speed USB device support. The integrated PTC supports up to 256 channels of self/mutual capacitive touch sensing, enabling touch button, slider, and proximity designs without external touch ICs. The 12-bit ADC achieves up to 350 ksps with hardware averaging, while the 10-bit DAC supports sample rates up to 350 ksps for waveform generation.

The ATSAMD20J15B-AUT implements Microchip's SleepWalking technology and multiple power domains, achieving active current of approximately 70 uA/MHz and standby current down to a few microamps in deep-sleep modes. The 64-pin TQFP-EP package exposes a thermal pad that can be soldered to the PCB ground plane for improved thermal performance and electrical grounding of analog references.

Typical applications include home automation nodes, smart appliance control panels, capacitive touch user interfaces, low-cost consumer electronics, industrial sensor hubs, and USB device peripherals. The PTC peripheral makes this MCU particularly attractive for replacing mechanical buttons with capacitive touch in sealed enclosures.

When designing with this device, allocate one of the six SERCOM modules per required communication interface and verify the 64-pin TQFP-EP pinout against your PCB footprint early in the design cycle. The exposed pad must be soldered to a sufficiently large copper pour for thermal dissipation and analog reference stability; failure to do so can degrade ADC performance.

Design Notes

The 64-pin TQFP-EP package exposes a thermal pad on the underside that must be soldered to a copper pour of at least 1 square inch for proper thermal dissipation. Estimated: at 48 MHz active mode (3.3 V, ~3.4 mA core current) and 10 mA I/O load, total power dissipation is roughly 45 mW, well within the TQFP-EP thermal rating of ~40 C/W theta-JA. However, when driving high-current GPIO or USB bus-powered loads, the pad keeps junction temperatures under the 100 C industrial limit. Solder paste stencil aperture should use a 1:1 pad pattern with multiple smaller openings for void reduction.

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of every VDD, VDDIO, and VDDANA pin, plus a single 4.7 uF bulk capacitor near the package. The AVDD/VDDANA analog supply pin (pin 64) must be filtered with a ferrite bead or 10 ohm resistor to isolate from digital switching noise; bypass with 100 nF and 10 uF capacitors. USB D+/D- traces (pins 24/25) must be routed as a 90 ohm differential pair with matching length to within 150 mil. The exposed pad must connect to the ground plane with at least 9 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 0.5 mm pitch) for optimal thermal performance.

Do not assume the SAM D20 family Bootloader is present in Flash for field updates; check the NVMCTRL fuse settings or program the bootloader explicitly via MPLAB X. The internal 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator requires a crystal with specified load capacitance; use a crystal with 7 pF to 12 pF CL per the datasheet. PTC touch sensing requires careful PCB layout with hatched ground fill below touch electrodes and ground-free guard rings around sensitive traces to prevent false touches. The SWD interface pins (PA30/PA31) must not be pulled low at reset or the MCU enters debug mode unintentionally.

Route the PTC touch electrode traces as short, narrow traces away from switching signals and ground fills. Keep analog inputs (AINx on PA02-PA11 and PB02-PB11) physically separated from SERCOM switching lines and PWM outputs to minimize ADC crosstalk. Place the 32.768 kHz crystal close to pins 1-2 (XIN32/XOUT32) with guard traces to ground; the high-frequency system clock trace (if using external HF crystal) should be similarly short and guarded. Avoid routing high-speed signals under the exposed thermal pad cutout.
