LM5013DDAR Overview
A buck converter (step-down switching regulator) is a power management IC that converts a higher DC input voltage to a lower DC output voltage using a controlled switching element, an inductor, and output filtering. Buck converters sit within the broader hierarchy of switching regulators -> DC/DC converters -> power management ICs -> semiconductors, and are distinguished from linear regulators (LDOs) by their high efficiency across wide VIN/VOUT ratios.
Key features include a wide 6-V to 100-V input range that minimizes the need for external surge suppression, a 50-ns minimum controllable on-time that enables large step-down ratios (e.g., direct 48-V to low-voltage rail conversion), a constant on-time (COT) control architecture for fast transient response, integrated input UVLO, peak current-limit protection, thermal shutdown, a 3.5-ms fixed internal soft-start, and an open-drain PGOOD indicator for fault reporting and sequencing.
The COT control scheme uses a comparator-delay timer on the high-side power switch to set the on-time, eliminating the loop compensation network required by traditional peak/current-mode controllers. The integrated 0.25-ohm high-side MOSFET minimizes conduction losses, while the 50-ns minimum on/off time allows extreme step-down ratios without duty-cycle saturation.
Typical applications include industrial 24-V/48-V bus regulation, telecommunications equipment, battery charging, and HVAC systems. In 48-V telecom systems the LM5013DDAR can step directly down to 3.3-V or 5-V loads, replacing two-stage converter designs.
When selecting a buck converter for high-voltage inputs, verify the IC's input rating (100 V here) exceeds the worst-case transient on the rail, and confirm that the minimum on-time supports your VIN - VOUT ratio at the target switching frequency. Use the SO PowerPAD thermal pad for heat dissipation and connect it to a sufficient copper area.

Typical Applications
LM5013DDAR is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial 24V / 48V Bus Regulation, Telecom 48V Point-of-Load Conversion, Battery Charging and Power Tools, HVAC and Building Automation, Automotive 12V / 24V Auxiliary Rails, Solar Power Optimizers and Microinverters.
Industrial 24V / 48V Bus Regulation
The LM5013DDAR's 6-V to 100-V input range directly steps down a 24-V or 48-V industrial bus to 3.3-V, 5-V, or 12-V rails without intermediate conversion stages. The integrated 100-V MOSFET and 50-ns minimum on-time handle wide VIN transients on factory-bus rails while the COT architecture delivers fast transient response for motor-control and PLC loads. At 3.5 A full load with a 48-V to 5-V conversion, efficiency typically exceeds 85%, eliminating heatsinks in compact DIN-rail designs.
Recommended
Telecom 48V Point-of-Load Conversion
In telecom systems the LM5013DDAR converts a nominal 48-V backplane rail directly to 3.3-V or 5-V processor voltages, replacing traditional two-stage (48V->12V->10V) designs. The 50-ns minimum on-time maintains regulation at large step-down ratios, and the 10-uA sleep quiescent current supports energy-efficient standby modes required by ETSI standards. The 8-pin SO PowerPAD footprint suits dense PoL cards where board area is constrained.
Recommended
Battery Charging and Power Tools
The LM5013DDAR regulates multi-cell battery stacks (up to 18S Li-ion at 100 V max) down to charging-controller supply voltages. Its wide VIN tolerates inductive kickback from brushed DC loads, while the 3.5-A capability supports rapid charging currents. The integrated peak current-limit and thermal shutdown protect against the high inrush typical when connecting deeply discharged packs, and the small SO PowerPAD package fits inside cordless-drill handle enclosures.
Recommended
HVAC and Building Automation
HVAC control boards run from 24-V AC rectified rails with substantial transient content, where the LM5013DDAR's 100-V input margin and integrated UVLO reject bulk-capacitor ringing. The 3.5-A output powers damper-motor drivers, sensor arrays, and communication modules (BACnet, Modbus) from a single buck stage. The -40C to +125C junction rating covers unconditioned rooftop equipment, and the open-drain PGOOD output feeds the building-management fault indicator.
Recommended
Automotive 12V / 24V Auxiliary Rails
Although not AEC-Q100 qualified itself, the LM5013DDAR suits non-safety automotive subsystems such as infotainment power, USB charging ports, and lighting controllers. The 100-V transient rating covers 24V truck load-dump events, while the COT architecture tolerates the noisy alternator environment without external filtering. Choose the LM5013-Q1 variant instead when AEC-Q100 qualification is required for the application.
Recommended
Solar Power Optimizers and Microinverters
String-level solar optimizers place a buck converter between the panel and the DC bus; the LM5013DDAR's 100-V input matches 60-V/72-cell panels with margin for cold-weather Voc boost. The high efficiency at moderate loads (peak >90%) maximizes energy harvest, while the integrated MOSFET keeps the per-panel electronics affordable at scale. The compact SO PowerPAD footprint allows integration into the optimizer's junction-box enclosure.

Design Notes
At VIN=48V, VOUT=5V, and 3.5A load, the LM5013DDAR dissipates approximately (48-5)*3.5 = 150 W in theory, but actual switching losses dominate at high VIN. Estimated: with 90% efficiency at this conversion ratio, total dissipation is approximately 19 W (12 W conduction + 7 W switching). The 8-pin SO PowerPAD requires a minimum 1 square inch of 2-oz copper pour on top layer plus thermal vias to inner planes to keep junction rise below 50C. Without adequate thermal design, expect thermal shutdown at high ambient temperatures.
Place the input bypass capacitor (>= 1 uF X7R ceramic) as close as possible to the VIN and GND pins. Keep the BST capacitor trace to pin 2 short (<5 mm) to avoid ringing that could overstress the high-side gate. The SW node should have a minimum copper area to reduce capacitive coupling, and the feedback divider (FB to GND) should be routed away from the SW node to avoid noise injection. Use a ground plane on layer 2 with vias stitching around the SW loop.
Do not exceed 100 V on VIN even transiently - the integrated MOSFET's BVdss is 100 V. The minimum on-time of 50 ns limits the achievable step-down ratio at high switching frequencies: at 1 MHz the minimum achievable VOUT is approximately VIN * (50ns / 1us) = 5% of VIN. For 48V to 1V conversion, you must reduce the switching frequency below 250 kHz. The EN/UVLO pin requires precise threshold setting; leaving it floating disables the device, while tying it directly to VIN defeats the undervoltage lockout protection.
Compliance Information
RoHS compliant per TI product page. LM5013DDAR is not AEC-Q100 qualified; choose LM5013-Q1 for automotive applications.
