PIC16C662T-10I/L Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC16C662T-10I/L is an 8-bit RISC microcontroller from the PIC® 16C mid-range family, featuring 7KB (4K x 14) of One-Time-Programmable (OTP) program memory, 10 MHz maximum operating frequency, and a 44-pin PLCC (J-Lead) package rated for the industrial temperature range. As a member of Microchip's classic PIC16C6xx series, it integrates a Harvard-architecture RISC CPU core with 35 single-word instructions, allowing most instructions to execute in a single instruction cycle for efficient embedded control.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU, program memory, data RAM, EEPROM/OTP, and peripherals onto one silicon die. The PIC16C6xx family belongs to Microchip's mid-range MCU taxonomy: 8-bit MCU -> microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor. It sits between 8-bit baseline PIC10/12/16 cores and the higher-performance 16-bit PIC24/dsPIC families, balancing code density, low cost, and a rich peripheral set for general-purpose control.

Key features of the PIC16C662T-10I/L include 7KB OTP program memory (4K x 14-bit words), 192 bytes of data RAM, five 8-bit I/O ports (PORTA-PORTE), a 10-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) module, two 8-bit timer/counters (Timer0 and Timer2) plus one 16-bit timer (Timer1), a Universal Synchronous Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (USART) for serial communication, and a watchdog timer for code-flow recovery. The OTP memory allows one-time field programming, making the part well suited for production runs of stable, mature firmware designs.

The device operates from 3.0V to 5.5V and supports an industrial temperature range of -40C to +85C. Its 44-pin PLCC (J-Lead) package provides a robust through-hole-mountable footprint that is easy to socket on legacy and industrial backplanes, and the J-lead geometry supports standard programming sockets and ATE fixtures. The 10 MHz clock source enables instruction execution at up to 5 MIPS, sufficient for closed-loop control and serial-protocol handling.

Typical applications include industrial automation controllers, consumer-electronics control boards, sensor-signal conditioning front ends, motor-control auxiliary logic, HVAC control modules, security-panel keypads, and legacy automotive body modules. The combination of OTP memory and a 5V-tolerant I/O structure makes this device a long-life fit for mature product lines that do not require in-system reprogramming.

When designing with the PIC16C662T-10I/L, ensure that the in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) interface is accessible on the PCB for factory programming, and that the OTP window is protected from UV exposure in end products. The PLCC socket should be specified with a low-profile, machine-insertable retention feature to withstand industrial shock and vibration.

The 5V-tolerant I/O and 10 MHz clock handle LED indicator scanning, button-matrix debouncing, IR remote-control decoding, and 7-segment display multiplexing with no external glue logic. The 33 GPIO lines support front-panel keypads, LCD bias generators, and rotary-encoder inputs. The 7 KB OTP code budget accommodates multi-state appliance firmware (wash cycles, defrost routines) with structured state machines. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade allows deployment in unventilated enclosures. Compared to modern 32-bit MCUs, the PIC16C662T-10I/L is lower-cost and easier to qualify for safety-critical consumer products.

🎥

Security Panel Keypads

Security alarm keypads, PIR-sensor hubs, and access-control panels use the PIC16C662T-10I/L as the local user-interface controller. The 33 GPIO pins drive 4x4 key matrix scanning, 7-segment LED drivers, piezo buzzer PWM, and a backlit LCD via software. The 10-bit ADC reads battery voltage and zone-loop resistance values to 0.1% accuracy for tamper detection. The 5 MIPS throughput handles debouncing, encryption-light rolling-code verification, and UART communication to the main alarm panel. OTP memory prevents firmware reverse-engineering, a security benefit for alarm systems. The -40C to +85C industrial temperature grade supports unheated garages and outdoor enclosures.

HVAC Control Modules

HVAC zone controllers, thermostat bases, and air-handler boards employ the PIC16C662T-10I/L for distributed temperature and damper control. The 10-bit ADC with 8 channels samples thermistor networks and pressure transducers at >1 kHz for closed-loop PID. The 33 I/O lines drive triac opto-couplers, relay coils, and 24 VAC zero-cross detectors. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature rating handles rooftop unit enclosures. The 7 KB OTP holds the scheduling state machine, fault diagnostics, and Modbus slave protocol stack. The 44-PLCC package is socketable for easy field service on installed HVAC equipment. Compared to discrete logic, the MCU provides configurability without hardware rework.

🏭

Motor Control Auxiliary Logic

Stepper-motor driver boards, brushless DC (BLDC) auxiliary controllers, and small-servo positioning modules use the PIC16C662T-10I/L as the supervisory MCU alongside a dedicated gate driver. The USART interfaces to the main controller; the 16-bit Timer1 generates step-clock pulses with microsecond resolution; the 10-bit ADC reads Hall sensors and shunt resistors. The 44-PLCC package handles the through-hole mounting typical of motor-driver PCBAs. OTP memory locks the acceleration profile and current-loop tuning, preventing field tampering. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade supports motor-housing environments. The 5 MIPS throughput is enough for trapezoidal commutation at speeds up to 30 krpm.

🚗

Legacy Automotive Body Modules

Older-generation body control modules (door locks, mirror controllers, seat-position memory) used the PIC16C662T-10I/L as the local node controller. The 5V I/O structure directly drives automotive-grade relays and lamp drivers; the USART links to a LIN or proprietary body bus; the 10-bit ADC reads mirror-position potentiometers and Hall-effect switches. Industrial -40C to +85C temperature grade fits cabin and door-cavity environments. OTP memory locks the body-module calibration and prevents warranty-tampering. While modern vehicles have migrated to CAN/LIN MCUs like the PIC16F1xxx family, the PIC16C662T-10I/L remains in service for aftermarket replacement and legacy platform maintenance.

Design Notes

Decouple the VDD pins (10 and 31 on the 44-PLCC package) with a 100 nF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of each pin, plus a single 10 uF tantalum or aluminum bulk capacitor at the board entry point. The PIC16C662T-10I/L has two VDD pins to reduce supply inductance for the internal core and I/O drivers; both must be decoupled. Estimated: with two 100 nF ceramics + 10 uF bulk, the supply rail noise is held below 50 mVpp at the MCU pins under a 50 mA load step.

The MCLR/VPP pin (pin 40) requires a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD for normal operation; for ICSP programming it must be able to be pulled to ~13V. Do not leave MCLR floating, as noise on the MCLR line can trigger spurious resets. For in-circuit programming, isolate the MCLR pull-up from the ICSP programmer's VPP drive with a diode (1N4148) or a 10 kohm series resistor to allow 13V application during programming without back-driving the rest of the circuit.

The 44-PLCC package has a thermal resistance (theta_JA) of approximately 50 C/W in still air. At 5V VDD and 10 MHz, the PIC16C662T-10I/L dissipates roughly 25 mW during active execution (IDD ~5 mA), producing a junction temperature rise of ~1.25 C above ambient. Estimated: this is well within industrial -40C to +85C limits with no heatsink required. However, in enclosed IP65+ enclosures with no airflow, derate by 5-10 C to account for self-heating of nearby power components.

Route the OSC1/OSC2 crystal traces (pins 12 and 13) as short, symmetric traces to a through-hole crystal (e.g. ECS-160-20-3X) with 22 pF load capacitors to ground. Keep the crystal traces away from switching nodes such as the CCP1 PWM output (RC2, pin 16) and the USART lines (RC6/RC7, pins 24/25) by at least 5 mm. Place a ground guard ring around the crystal to reduce radiated EMI on long sensor cables.
