PIC24FJ64GP203-I/M5 Overview

The Microchip PIC24FJ64GP203-I/M5 is a 16-bit PIC24F microcontroller running at 32 MHz (16 MIPS) with 64 KB ECC Flash and 8 KB RAM in a 36-pin 5x5 mm UQFN package. The '-I' industrial temperature grade supports -40C to +85C operation, while the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) architecture targets battery-backed designs.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), data memory (RAM), and a range of peripherals such as timers, ADC, communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C), and general-purpose I/O. The PIC24F family occupies the 16-bit mid-range of Microchip's product hierarchy, sitting between the 8-bit PIC16/PIC18 and the 32-bit PIC32 lines. It uses a modified Harvard architecture with a 16-bit data path and 24-bit instruction word, offering higher code density and faster arithmetic than 8-bit parts while retaining deterministic interrupt behavior.

Key features include up to 21 analog channels via a 10-bit ADC (with 12-bit option on select variants), multiple serial interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C), 4 general-purpose timers, and a Real-Time Clock/Calendar with RTCC. The 36-UQFN package provides 31 user I/O pins and an exposed pad for thermal dissipation, suitable for compact hand-held products.

Typical applications include portable medical devices, low-power wireless sensor nodes, USB HID peripherals, industrial control, and consumer appliances where low sleep current and 16-bit math performance are required. The combination of 64 KB ECC Flash and XLP sleep currents down to a few hundred nA enables years of operation on a single coin cell.

Designers should plan a PCB footprint with a continuous thermal pad under the UQFN and 4-layer routing to escape 36 pins on a 0.4 mm pitch; the exposed pad must be soldered for electrical ground and thermal continuity. When migrating from PIC24FJ64GP202 to GP203, verify peripheral pin assignments because the GP203 has additional analog channels.

Design Notes

The 36-pin UQFN package uses a 0.4 mm pitch and requires a continuous ground plane beneath the exposed thermal pad (EP). According to Microchip UQFN-36 PCB guidelines, multiple vias (typically 9 in a 3x3 array) must stitch the EP to the inner ground plane for electrical continuity and 4-layer thermal dissipation. Do not route signals beneath the EP. Use NSMD (Non-Solder Mask Defined) pads with solder mask expansion of 0.05 mm to improve solder joint reliability.

Place a 1 uF X7R 0603 ceramic bypass capacitor within 2 mm of each VDD pin (3 VDD pins on UQFN-36), plus a single 10 uF bulk capacitor on the main supply rail. Estimated: at 32 MHz active and 3.3 V VDD, peak core current is approximately 15 mA per VDD domain, so the 1 uF cap provides ~67 nC of charge reserve within a switching event. Place a 100 nF cap on the VCAP pin (internal voltage regulator) if present - omitting it prevents the MCU from starting.

Do not leave the MCLR pin floating - tie it to VDD through a 10 kohm pull-up for normal operation, or to a supervisor for reset control. Configure unused I/O as outputs and tied low (not inputs floating) to minimize shoot-through current in sleep mode. When using the internal FRC oscillator, calibration must be loaded from Flash configuration words at startup to meet the +/- 2% accuracy specification; failing to do so results in UART baud rate errors.

When routing the 32 MHz external crystal (if used) on PCB, keep traces under 5 mm and surround them with a ground guard ring. Place the load capacitors (typically 15-33 pF) within 2 mm of the OSC1/OSC2 pins. For switching-noise immunity on analog channels, dedicate an AVdd pin pair and filter it through a ferrite bead + 10 uF + 100 nF Pi network; shared noisy VDD will couple into ADC readings by 1-2 LSB.
