PIC32CM5164LS60064T-I/5LX Overview

The Microchip PIC32CM5164LS60064T-I/5LX is an ultra-low-power 32-bit microcontroller built on the Arm Cortex-M23 core running at up to 48 MHz, integrating 512 KB of Flash and 64 KB of SRAM in a 64-pin VQFN (9x9 mm) package. It belongs to the PIC32CM LS60 family and combines hardened security features (integrated ATECC608 Trust Platform, Arm TrustZone, immutable secure boot, secure debug) with SleepWalking peripherals that wake only the needed subsystem, reducing active-mode current to a fraction of conventional Cortex-M0+ designs. The 'I' temperature grade supports -40C to +85C operation.

Background Knowledge - What is a Cortex-M23 microcontroller? A Cortex-M23 microcontroller is a 32-bit MCU IP core from Arm designed for energy-efficient embedded applications; it sits between the older Cortex-M0+ and the more capable Cortex-M4 in the Arm hierarchy, with full Armv8-M Baseline architecture including TrustZone for Cortex-M. The PIC32CM LS60 family extends this with Microchip's proprietary low-power techniques including picoPower, SleepWalking, and Event System. The taxonomy for this part is: 32-bit microcontroller -> Arm Cortex-M MCU -> Cortex-M23 family -> PIC32CM LS60 family -> Microchip PIC microcontroller line.

Key features include up to 48 MHz CPU clock, 2.64 CoreMark/MHz performance, 1.03 DMIPS/MHz, single-cycle hardware multiplier, hardware divider, Nested Vector Interrupt Controller (NVIC), Memory Protection Unit (MPU), integrated touch controller and op-amps (smart analog), 2.0V-3.63V supply for LS60 variants, and 5x5 mm to 9x9 mm package options depending on pin count. The LS60 suffix indicates the security-enabled variant with ATECC608 crypto authentication integrated on-die.

The architecture pairs a Cortex-M23 core with bus matrix connected to Flash, SRAM, peripherals and the Event System for zero-CPU-overhead peripheral hand-off. SleepWalking allows peripherals to inspect incoming data autonomously and only wake the CPU when relevant events arrive, dramatically reducing average power in IoT sensor nodes. TrustZone for Cortex-M partitions memory and peripherals into Secure and Non-Secure worlds.

Typical applications include IoT end nodes (battery-powered sensors), secure connected devices with crypto authentication (smart locks, asset trackers), touch-interface industrial controls, smart home and building automation hubs, medical wearables (low-power BLE body monitors), and secure payment terminals. The combination of low power, integrated crypto, and touch makes it well-suited to edge nodes that must authenticate to a cloud.

Design consideration - The 2.0V-3.63V supply range means this MCU cannot be powered directly from a single-cell Li-Ion (4.2V max) without an LDO; pair with a low-Iq regulator such as MCP1700. Decouple VDD with a 100 nF X7R ceramic placed within 3 mm of each power pin group.

According to Microchip's PIC32CM LS60 family datasheet, the device inspects incoming sensor data without waking the CPU, only triggering a wake-up on threshold crossing, cutting active-mode current by up to 80% versus always-on designs. The 512 KB Flash stores over-the-air firmware update images with dual-bank support, while the 64 KB SRAM buffers sensor payloads before BLE/Wi-Fi transmit. Pair with a 3V LDO such as MCP1700 and a sensor front-end to build a wire-free environmental monitor.

🔐

Secure Connected Smart Lock / Asset Tracker

The PIC32CM5164LS60064T-I/5LX is purpose-built for connected locks and asset trackers because its integrated ATECC608 Trust Platform and Arm TrustZone provide immutable secure boot and crypto authentication without an external companion IC. According to the Microchip LS60 product page, on-die ATECC608 supports ECDSA, ECDH, SHA-256 and AES-128 hardware acceleration; TrustZone partitions memory into Secure/Non-Secure worlds so application code cannot read keys. The Cortex-M23 runs BLE provisioning stacks in the Non-Secure world while crypto operations remain isolated, lowering BOM count versus designs with a discrete ATECC608B.

🏭

Touch-Interface Industrial Control

Design Notes

The PIC32CM5164LS60064 operates on 2.0 V to 3.63 V and cannot accept a single-cell Li-Ion (4.2 V max) directly. Place an LDO such as MCP1700 (1.6 uA quiescent current) between the cell and VDD; add a 100 nF X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of every VDD pin pair and a bulk 4.7 uF ceramic on the regulator output. For battery-powered designs, route the LDO enable line to a GPIO so the MCU can fully power-gate unused rails.

The 9x9 mm 64-VQFN package dissipates heat primarily through the central thermal pad. Connect the exposed pad (pin 64 / GND paddle) to a ground copper pour on top and bottom layers with at least 16 thermal vias (0.3 mm drill, 1 mm pitch) to a bottom-side heat-spreader. Estimated theta_JA of about 25 C/W with 4-layer 1 oz copper is sufficient for the LS60's typical 30 mW active power; verify with a junction-temperature calculation in your environment.

Do not assume the LS60 ATECC608 and LS00 firmware are interchangeable - TrustZone/secure-boot initialization differs and skipping the secure-boot sequence on the LS60 can brick the device. Also, the LS60 supply range starts at 2.0 V versus 1.62 V on the LE00; designs that migrate code between LE00 and LS60 must check brown-out thresholds. Finally, the SWD pins (SWDIO/SWCLK) share physical pads with GPIOs - configure them only after reset deassertion to avoid debug-lockout.
