PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML vs PIC32MM0064GPM028-I/ML - which is better?
The PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML and PIC32MM0064GPM028-I/ML share the same VQFN-28 6x6 package and the same 25 MHz microAptiv core, so both are pin-to-pin drop-in compatible on the same PCB. The PIC32MM0128GPM028 doubles the Flash to 128KB (vs 64KB) while keeping 16KB SRAM identical. Choose PIC32MM0128GPM028 when firmware exceeds 64KB; otherwise PIC32MM0064GPM028 saves roughly 15% unit cost at the same performance.
When should I choose PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML over PIC32MM0256GPM028-I/ML?
Choose the PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML (128KB Flash) when firmware size fits comfortably under 100KB and you want the lowest unit cost in the 28-pin QFN option. Step up to the PIC32MM0256GPM028-I/ML only when you actually need 256KB, since it carries the same core peripherals but a higher price per unit. Both share the same VQFN-28 footprint, so PCB layout does not need to change between them.
What is the best drop-in replacement for PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML?
The best drop-in replacement within the same family is the PIC32MM0064GPM028-I/ML, which shares the same VQFN-28 6x6 package and identical pinout, but offers half the Flash (64KB vs 128KB). For firmware under 64KB this is the most cost-effective substitute. The PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/M6 in 28-UQFN 4x4 is the same silicon in a smaller package, but is NOT a true drop-in (different land pattern).
Can PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/M6 replace PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML?
No - the PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/M6 uses a 28-pin UQFN 4x4 mm package, while the PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML uses a 28-pin VQFN 6x6 mm package with exposed pad. Although both share the same silicon die and 128KB Flash, the package footprints differ and the /M6 cannot be soldered onto a board designed for /ML. Designers who need to migrate between them must update the PCB land pattern - this is a cross-package change, not a drop-in replacement.
Where to download PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML datasheet PDF?
The PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML datasheet can be downloaded directly from the Microchip product page at https://www.microchip.com/en-us/product/PIC32MM0128GPM028 under the Documentation tab. Operating voltage is 2.0-3.6V and quiescent current drops below 1 uA in deep sleep. These specifications make it well-suited for USB HID peripherals, portable medical devices, and battery-backed IoT sensors.
What is the best STMicroelectronics equivalent for PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML?
There is no true pin-compatible STMicroelectronics drop-in for the PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML in the 28-pin VQFN 6x6 footprint. STMicro STM32 equivalents that match the core performance class (Cortex-M0+ with USB) - such as the STM32F072 series - are available only in different package pinouts (LQFP-48, UFQFPN-28 at 4x4). Migrating from PIC32 to STM32 requires both PCB rework and firmware rewrite, so it is a redesign, not a drop-in substitute.
Is PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML suitable for battery-powered applications?
Yes, the PIC32MM0128GPM028-I/ML is designed for battery-powered applications. Its 2.0-3.6V operating range covers single Li-ion (3.0-4.2V regulated) and 2xAA cells directly, and the multiple low-power sleep modes (Idle, Sleep, Deep Sleep) drop quiescent current below 1 uA. Combined with the 25 MHz MIPS32 core that can wake, process, and return to sleep rapidly, it is a strong fit for energy-harvesting sensors, wearables, and remote controls.

  • Integrated USB vs GPL variants (vs PIC32MM0064GPL028-I/ML)

Design Notes

The 28-VQFN package uses an exposed thermal pad on the underside that MUST be soldered to a properly sized ground pad on the PCB. Per Microchip layout guidelines, this pad should be at least 4x4 mm and connected to the ground plane with a 4x4 thermal via array (0.3 mm via diameter, 1 mm pitch). Failing to solder the e-pad results in poor thermal dissipation and can cause the device to overheat at full 25 MHz operation under USB load.

Place a 0.1 uF ceramic decoupling capacitor within 5 mm of each VDD pin, plus a single 4.7-10 uF bulk capacitor near the IC. For USB applications, the VBUS sense line should be conditioned with a resistive divider and a small capacitor for noise filtering. The MCP1700 LDO is recommended as a USB bus-powered 3.3V supply because it offers low quiescent current (1.6 uA) that complements the MCU's deep-sleep modes.

Do not confuse the /ML (VQFN-28 6x6 mm) package with the /M6 (UQFN-28 4x4 mm) package - they are pin-compatible at silicon level but use different PCB footprints. Boards designed for /ML cannot accept /M6 without PCB rework. Also note that GPL variants (without USB) and GPM variants (with USB) are NOT drop-in compatible from a firmware perspective - USB stack code in GPM firmware will not link on a GPL device.

The USB D+/D- traces must be routed as a 90-ohm differential pair with characteristic impedance matched to the cable. Keep the pair length under 25 mm total, route over a continuous ground plane, and place the 27-ohm series termination resistors within 4 mm of the MCU pins. The VBUS sense line requires a 0.1 uF bypass to ground within 5 mm of the pin to suppress ESD-induced transients during cable hot-plug events.
