STM32F746IEK6 Overview

The STMicroelectronics STM32F746IEK6 is a high-performance 32-bit Arm Cortex-M7 microcontroller operating up to 216 MHz, with 512 KB (512K x 8) of on-chip Flash memory and 1.8 V / 2.5 V / 3.3 V supply options, packaged in a 176-pin UFBGA (10 x 10 mm) package. The device integrates a single-precision floating-point FPU, DSP instructions, an Art Accelerator graphics core, an L1 cache, SDRAM interface support, and TFT/LCD display capability.

A microcontroller is a single integrated circuit that contains a CPU core, embedded Flash and RAM memory, and a set of dedicated peripherals such as timers, UARTs, SPI, I2C, ADC/DAC and DMA controllers. The STM32F746IEK6 belongs to the STM32F7 high-performance line, sitting above general-purpose STM32F1/F4 devices in the ST hierarchy of embedded MCU -> 32-bit Arm Cortex-M MCU -> high-performance microcontroller -> power management and connectivity ecosystem. It is aimed at industrial control, IoT endpoints, embedded automation, motor control, metering and low-power board designs.

Key differentiators include the 216 MHz Cortex-M7 core with double-precision FPU capability on the F7 family, the Chrom-ART / Art Accelerator for hardware-accelerated 2D graphics and JPEG decoding, up to 512 KB of Flash for complex firmware and assets, and a rich set of high-speed interfaces including SDRAM support for external memory expansion when display framebuffers exceed internal RAM. Multiple low-power modes support battery and always-on designs, while the 176-ball UFBGA land pattern enables very compact PCB footprints for space-constrained modules.

Architecturally, the Cortex-M7 core uses a Harvard-style bus matrix with an instruction cache and data cache, and ST's ART Accelerator caches frequently executed instructions in flash to reduce cycle penalties. The presence of an L1 cache and hardware accelerator is what separates the STM32F746 from earlier STM32F4 parts, making it noticeably faster on peripheral-heavy and graphics workloads while retaining the familiar STM32 ecosystem and CubeMX toolchain.

Typical applications include industrial HMI panels with TFT displays, motor control and servo drive units, building and energy metering equipment, connected IoT gateways, and audio/DSP front-ends. Because the package is 10 x 10 mm UFBGA, the design must be assembled on a multilayer PCB with fine-pitch balls and X-ray inspection recommended.

When designing with this part, verify the ball map and land pattern against the 176-UFBGA mechanical drawing and confirm the SDIO, SDRAM and LTDC pin assignments before committing to a layout. Also budget decoupling capacitors and a clean 3.3 V analog supply region, since the high-speed SDRAM and graphics paths are sensitive to supply ripple.

Typical Applications

STM32F746IEK6 is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial HMI with TFT Display, Motor Control and Servo Drive, Energy Metering and Smart Grid Terminal, Connected IoT Gateway and Edge Node, Audio and DSP Front-End, Embedded Automation and Robotics Controller.

🖥️

Industrial HMI with TFT Display

The STM32F746IEK6 is built for graphical operator panels because it combines a 216 MHz Arm Cortex-M7 core with the LCD-TFT controller and the hardware Art Accelerator that offloads 2D drawing and JPEG decoding from the CPU. In a typical panel, the MCU drives an external SDRAM buffer for a 480 x 272 or 800 x 480 RGB framebuffer while the Cortex-M7 core handles touch-screen conditioning, keypad input and the supervisory logic that drives the fieldbus. The advantage over a generic Cortex-M4 is measurable: the Art Accelerator and L1 cache remove the per-pixel fill cost that would otherwise consume the frame budget. The trade-off is layout complexity, because the 176-UFBGA ball array forces a multilayer board with routed SDRAM traces and a solid ground plane under the package.

🏭

Motor Control and Servo Drive

For field-oriented motor control, the STM32F746IEK6 offers the combination of a 216 MHz Cortex-M7 with FPU and DSP instructions, fast ADCs and advanced timer blocks that determines the achievable control-loop bandwidth. The single-precision FPU means the inverse Park and Clarke transforms run without a software floating-point penalty, and the ART Accelerator plus L1 cache keep interrupt latency predictable when the PWM counters update at tens of kilohertz. It is commonly paired with external gate drivers and current-sense amplifiers, with the MCU performing the current loop and a companion processor handling fieldbus messaging. Compared with a Cortex-M4 such as the STM32F407 class, the faster core shortens the computation dead time and leaves headroom for observers and fault handling.

⚡

Energy Metering and Smart Grid Terminal

The STM32F746IEK6 fits metering gateways where accurate measurement coexists with a rich communications stack. Its 216 MHz Cortex-M7 core processes three-phase energy calculations, RMS and power-factor algorithms, and harmonic analysis in real time, while the large 512 KB Flash stores calibration tables, firmware and metering algorithms that would overflow a smaller MCU. Low-power sleep modes combined with the option to run the core from a 1.8 V or 2.5 V rail help meet the standby-current targets of utility meters. The device is also used for smart-panel and DIN-rail data concentrators that add an Ethernet or cellular link, where the STM32 ecosystem provides certified TCP/IP stacks through STM32Cube.

🧩

Connected IoT Gateway and Edge Node

As an edge node, the STM32F746IEK6 consolidates protocol translation, local analytics and a user interface in a single device. Its 216 MHz Cortex-M7 handles TLS record processing and MQTT message handling with enough headroom to run local rule evaluation on sensor streams, while the 176-UFBGA footprint keeps the board small enough for DIN-rail or panel-mount enclosures. Multiple high-speed serial peripherals allow simultaneous links such as Ethernet PHY, a radio module and an SD card for local logging, with DMA handling the bulk transfers. Compared with a low-end Cortex-M0+ node, the STM32F746IEK6 removes the need for a separate host processor, though the 10 x 10 mm BGA land pattern requires fine-pitch assembly capability in volume manufacturing.

🎧

Audio and DSP Front-End

Audio-centric products benefit from the DSP instruction set and floating-point unit inside the STM32F746IEK6, which accelerates FFT, FIR filtering and biquad cascades used in active speakers, microphone arrays and hearing-aid style signal conditioning. The high core frequency allows multiple channels of audio to be processed alongside control logic without a dedicated DSP, and the ample Flash removes the need for external program memory in multi-algorithm devices. The Cortex-M7's L1 cache and ART Accelerator keep instruction fetches from dominating the cycle budget during streaming from a DMA-fed audio peripheral. In practice this class of design pairs the MCU with a codec such as an I2S interface, and care is needed because the fine-pitch UFBGA package constrains thermal spreading for sustained high-clock operation.

🤖

Embedded Automation and Robotics Controller

Machine controllers and robot nodes use the STM32F746IEK6 when they must combine deterministic real-time control with a graphical diagnostics screen. The 216 MHz Cortex-M7 executes motion loops and PID algorithms while the Art Accelerator renders diagnostic plots and status pages locally, removing the need for a separate display host processor. Its high-speed UART, USB and SDIO peripherals let the controller host several fieldbus slaves plus a removable SD card for logging and firmware update, while the 512 KB Flash holds both the motion firmware and the UI resources. Compared with a Cortex-M4 based controller the STM32F746IEK6 offers more compute and flash headroom, at the cost of a more demanding BGA assembly process and a larger pin count to route on the board.

What are the key specifications of STM32F746IEK6 that engineers should know?
The STM32F746IEK6 is a 32-bit Arm Cortex-M7 microcontroller with a maximum CPU frequency of 216 MHz, 512 KB (512K x 8) of embedded Flash, a floating-point FPU, DSP instruction support, an Art Accelerator graphics engine, an L1 cache, SDRAM interface support, and TFT/LCD display capability. According to the STMicroelectronics STM32F745xx/STM32F746xx product documentation, the STM32F746xx devices are built on the high-performance Arm Cortex-M7 32-bit RISC core operating at up to 216 MHz. The part is supplied in a 176-ball UFBGA package measuring 10 x 10 mm, and the listed supply options are 1.8 V, 2.5 V and 3.3 V.
What is the maximum operating frequency of the STM32F746IEK6?
The STM32F746IEK6 operates at up to 216 MHz. The STM32F745xx and STM32F746xx devices are based on the high-performance Arm Cortex-M7 32-bit RISC core operating at up to 216 MHz frequency, as stated in the STMicroelectronics device documentation. DigiKey and Mouser both list the device as a 216 MHz Cortex-M7 MCU with an Art Accelerator and L1 cache, which is what allows it to sustain that rate while executing complex code from on-chip Flash without stalling on every fetch.
How much flash memory does the STM32F746IEK6 have?
The STM32F746IEK6 provides 512 KB of Flash memory organised as 512K x 8, according to the DigiKey and Mouser product listings for this part number. That flash budget is one of the larger allocations in the STM32F7 line for a 176-UFBGA device, and it is the key reason this MCU is used for graphics firmware with assets, bootloader plus application images, and industrial user interfaces. The STM32F746IGK6 in the same 176-UFBGA footprint doubles the Flash to 1 MB when more code or image storage is required.
What package does the STM32F746IEK6 come in?
The STM32F746IEK6 is supplied in a 176-pin UFBGA package measuring 10 x 10 mm. DigiKey describes it as a 176-UFBGA (10x10) device, Arrow lists it as 201-Pin UFBGA in tray packaging, and the ST product family documentation places the STM32F746xE devices in that ball-count option. Because UFBGA is a fine-pitch ball array rather than a leaded package, the PCB requires dense via-in-pad or microvia routing, X-ray inspection after reflow, and a minimum of four copper layers for practical signal integrity.
Where can I download the STM32F746IEK6 datasheet PDF?
The STM32F746IEK6 datasheet PDF is available from the STMicroelectronics product page for the STM32F746 series and from the aggregated datasheet mirrors listed on Octopart and DigiKey. The core device documentation covers the STM32F745xx and STM32F746xx families, including the Cortex-M7 core details, memory map, electrical characteristics and the full 176-UFBGA pin and ball definitions. Because the ball map is only published in the manufacturer documents, use those sources rather than distributor summaries whenever you are creating a new PCB footprint.
What is the price of the STM32F746IEK6?
The STM32F746IEK6 is listed from approximately USD 23.54 per unit at LCSC as of 2026-10-30, which is the price anchor used for the volume tiers published on this page. Distributor pricing for this high-performance Cortex-M7 device in 176-UFBGA packaging is materially higher than generic Cortex-M3 or Cortex-M4 MCUs because of the larger die, the UFBGA assembly and the 512 KB Flash allocation. Volume pricing improves substantially at 100, 500 and 1000-piece quantities, so production builds should be quoted against full reel or tray quantities rather than single-piece pricing.
Where can I buy the STM32F746IEK6 online?
The STM32F746IEK6 can be ordered online from DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow, LCSC and the STMicroelectronics eStore, all of which are listed as sources for this exact part number. DigiKey carries it as a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M7 microcontroller with 512 KB Flash in 176-UFBGA, and LCSC shows it as in stock from about USD 23.54. For single-source-of-truth purchasing and traceability on automotive or industrial builds, ordering direct from the STMicroelectronics eStore guarantees the newest silicon revision and full lot traceability.
What is the lead time for the STM32F746IEK6?
Lead time for the STM32F746IEK6 varies with distributor inventory and current wafer allocation, and no fixed factory lead time is published in the distributor listings reviewed for this page as of 2026-10-30. DigiKey and Mouser both show the part as orderable with stock positions, while LCSC reports it in stock. Because the STM32F7 line is a mature, high-volume family, standard lead times are generally short; for safety-critical builds, request a scheduled-factory lead-time quote from STMicroelectronics rather than relying on distributor stock.
Is the STM32F746IEK6 in stock?
Yes, the STM32F746IEK6 is currently listed as in stock by LCSC, which also shows it as orderable from about USD 23.54 per unit as of 2026-10-30. DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow and the ST eStore all show the part as orderable. Because availability on fine-pitch UFBGA devices can change quickly, treat the distributor inventory figures as real-time snapshots and confirm the quantity and date code at the point of order, especially for designs that need traceable lots.
What is the difference between the STM32F746IEK6 and the STM32F745IEK6?
The main functional difference is display and graphics capability: the STM32F746 adds the LCD-TFT controller and the enhanced Art Accelerator (with JPEG hardware decoding) to the STM32F745 feature set, while both parts share the same 216 MHz Arm Cortex-M7 core with FPU, the same 512 KB Flash configuration and the same 176-UFBGA package. That means an STM32F745IEK6 board layout can physically accept an STM32F746IEK6, but the STM32F746 is the correct choice whenever you drive an external TFT panel or decode compressed images.
STM32F746IEK6 vs STM32F767IGK6 - which is better for a display-based industrial HMI?
For a display-based industrial HMI, the STM32F746IEK6 is the safer choice when the design uses external SDRAM for framebuffer storage, because SDRAM support is explicitly listed in the STM32F746 feature set, while the STM32F767 family is oriented toward USBHS and camera/graphics pipelines. The STM32F767IGK6 offers more Flash (1 MB versus 512 KB) and a different peripheral mix. If your HMI has no external SDRAM and is limited to 512 KB, either part works, but the STM32F746IEK6 remains the SDRAM-equipped option.
When should I choose the STM32F746IEK6 over the STM32F745IEK6?
Choose the STM32F746IEK6 when your design drives an LCD/TFT panel, decodes JPEG images, or needs external SDRAM attached to the bus matrix; choose the STM32F745IEK6 when the application is purely control-oriented, such as motor control or metering, and no display or framebuffer is involved. Because both share the 216 MHz Cortex-M7 core and the 176-UFBGA land pattern, the decision is usually feature-driven rather than layout-driven, which simplifies sourcing a second source for the same PCB.
Is the STM32F746IEK6 suitable for industrial control and motor control applications?
Yes, the STM32F746IEK6 is explicitly positioned for industrial control, IoT devices, embedded automation, motor control, metering and low-power board designs. Its 216 MHz Cortex-M7 core with FPU and DSP instructions provides the compute headroom for field-oriented motor control loops and signal processing, and the L1 cache plus ART Accelerator reduce the penalty of executing from Flash. For industrial deployments, note that the specified operating temperature grade must be confirmed against the part's ordering information for the -40 to +85 C or -40 to +105 C range you require.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the STM32F746IEK6?
The best drop-in replacement is the STM32F746IGK6: it is the same STM32F746 device in the same 176-UFBGA (10 x 10 mm) footprint with the same Cortex-M7 core, Art Accelerator and SDRAM/TFT feature set, differing mainly by carrying 1 MB of Flash instead of 512 KB, so it is fully backward compatible with existing firmware and board layouts. The STM32F745IEK6 in the same package is a functional drop-in when the extra display features are not needed. Verify the ball map and Flash size requirement before substituting either part.
What can replace the STM32F746IEK6 in an existing design?
A drop-in replacement for the STM32F746IEK6 must keep the same 176-UFBGA (10 x 10 mm) land pattern, so the practical choices are same-package STMicroelectronics parts: the STM32F746IGK6 (1 MB Flash, superset), the STM32F745IEK6 and STM32F745IGK6 (216 MHz Cortex-M7 without the LTDC/Art Accelerator enhancements), and the STM32F767IGK6 (Cortex-M7 with more Flash and USBHS). Cross-brand parts such as the GigaDevice GD32F450 are published in LQFP packages rather than 176-UFBGA, so they are not board-level drop-ins for this footprint.
Is the STM32F746IEK6 the same as the STM32F746IGK6?
They are the same STM32F746 silicon family in the same 176-UFBGA package, but they are not the same Flash configuration. The STM32F746IEK6 carries 512 KB (512K x 8) of Flash while the STM32F746IGK6 carries 1 MB, with the same Arm Cortex-M7 core at up to 216 MHz, the same Art Accelerator graphics engine, L1 cache, SDRAM support and TFT/LCD controller. The larger Flash part is therefore a functional superset and a direct upgrade path on an existing 176-UFBGA board.
What is the best GigaDevice equivalent for the STM32F746IEK6?
There is no true pin-to-pin GigaDevice substitute for the STM32F746IEK6 in the 176-UFBGA (10 x 10 mm) package. GigaDevice's GD32F450 series is the closest architectural match in Arm Cortex-M7 class performance, but it is offered in leaded LQFP packages including LQFP100, LQFP144 and LQFP176 rather than the 176-ball UFBGA land pattern used by the STM32F746IEK6, so it would require a full PCB redesign and its peripheral set is not register-compatible. Treat the GD32F450 as a redesign option, not a drop-in replacement.
Where can I find the STM32F746IEK6 pinout and ball map?
The authoritative 176-UFBGA ball map is published only in the STMicroelectronics device documentation for the STM32F745xx/STM32F746xx families, in the pin definition and package drawings sections, with the mechanical outline given for the 10 x 10 mm UFBGA option. Third-party sites such as Octopart, chipdig and DigiKey mirror the datasheet but do not add their own verified ball assignments. Because UFBGA balls are not individually silkscreened, always generate the footprint from the manufacturer mechanical drawing, including the pin-1 orientation marker and the ball pitch.
How do I power and decouple the STM32F746IEK6 in a 3.3 V design?
The STM32F746IEK6 accepts 1.8 V, 2.5 V or 3.3 V supply options, so a 3.3 V system design can run the core and I/O directly from a regulated 3.3 V rail. In practice you still need a local bulk capacitor plus a 100 nF high-frequency decoupling capacitor placed at the VDD/VSS supply balls on the 176-UFBGA land pattern, plus separate filtering for the analog supply group if the design uses the ADC or DAC. Decoupling and supply routing must follow the layout guidance in the ST application notes for STM32F7 series.

Selection Guide

Choose the STM32F746IEK6 when the design needs an external SDRAM framebuffer, an integrated TFT/LCD output, hardware JPEG decode, or simply more compute and Flash headroom than a Cortex-M4 provides in a compact 10 x 10 mm footprint. It is the natural pick for industrial HMIs, motor-control and servo drives, smart metering, audio/DSP front-ends and connected edge nodes running on the STM32Cube toolchain. If your board is display-free and purely control-oriented, the STM32F745IEK6 in the same 176-UFBGA land pattern removes the LTDC and enhanced Art Accelerator blocks and typically costs less; if firmware growth is the constraint, the STM32F746IGK6 doubles Flash to 1 MB with no board change. For applications needing the largest Flash headroom in this footprint, consider the STM32F750IEK6 with 2 MB. Do not expect a drop-in from other vendors: the GigaDevice GD32F450 series is published in LQFP rather than 176-UFBGA, so any cross-brand move requires a PCB redesign and full firmware revalidation.

Key Differentiators

  • Adds the LCD-TFT controller and enhanced Art Accelerator to the STM32F7 feature set (vs STM32F745IEK6)
  • Direct Flash upgrade path on the identical land pattern (vs STM32F746IGK6)
  • 216 MHz Cortex-M7 with FPU and DSP instructions for real-time control (vs STM32F429ZET6TR)
  • External SDRAM interface plus TFT controller in a 10 x 10 mm 176-UFBGA package (vs STM32F767IGK6)

Design Notes

The STM32F746IEK6 uses a 176-ball UFBGA on a 10 x 10 mm land pattern, so the layout must be driven from the ST mechanical drawing rather than a generic BGA library. Reserve the full ball array with a 0.5 mm pitch escape strategy, and use a minimum four-layer stack-up with a solid ground plane directly under the device so the 216 MHz core and the SDRAM interface have a low-impedance return path. Place the bulk and 100 nF decoupling capacitors on the same side as the device, immediately adjacent to their supply and ground balls, and keep the SDRAM data and address traces length-matched. Expect to plan for X-ray inspection after reflow.

Estimated thermal budget for a 3.3 V rail design: if the internal core rail is 1.2 V and the average core current is 120 mA, the dynamic core dissipation is approximately 1.2 V x 0.12 A = 0.144 W, and the I/O dissipation adds roughly 3.3 V x 0.05 A = 0.165 W for a 50 mA I/O load, for about 0.31 W total. That figure is well inside the capability of a 10 x 10 mm BGA with a full copper pour, but SDRAM refresh and continuous LTDC activity can raise it, so check the worst-case ambient of your enclosure rather than the 25 C lab condition. Note that the input supply current, not the load current, drives the regulator dissipation upstream.

The SDRAM interface and the LTDC pixel clock are the two most sensitive nets on this design. Route the SDRAM clock as a length-matched pair with a series damping resistor near the driver, keep the LCD data bus on a dedicated layer with continuous reference planes, and add an LC or ferrite-filtered branch for the analog supply group feeding the ADC and DAC. The L1 cache and ART Accelerator make the core fast, but they do not tolerate a noisy or inductively-coupled supply, so keep switching regulators and their inductors physically separated from the MCU and SDRAM area on the same board.

Two errors account for most STM32F746 build problems: assuming a 100-pin or 144-pin STM32F7 footprint will work (it will not - the ball map is entirely different), and forgetting that this 10 x 10 mm BGA needs a thermal-via field or a continuous ground pour under the array to dissipate core heat. Also note that replacing the STM32F746IEK6 with the STM32F745IEK6 is electrically safe on the same board but removes the LCD-TFT controller and JPEG hardware decode, so confirm your display code does not depend on those blocks before accepting that substitution.
