Typical Applications
TPA3116D2DADR is suitable for 6 applications: Bluetooth Active Speakers, Soundbars and TV Audio, Portable PA and Karaoke Systems, Automotive Infotainment Audio, Multichannel Home Theater Amplifiers, Industrial and Commercial Announcement Systems.
Bluetooth Active Speakers
The TPA3116D2DADR is a leading choice for Bluetooth and wireless active speakers because its 4.5-26 V supply range matches both battery packs and 12-24 V adapters, and its differential analog inputs connect directly to Bluetooth codec outputs. The filter-free BTL output eliminates LC filter cost, while over 85% efficiency keeps the 2 x 50 W design heat-sink-free on a two-layer PCB. SpeakerGuard amplitude limiting protects small drivers from clipping-induced damage during loud playback.
Recommended
Soundbars and TV Audio
In slim soundbar platforms, board height and thermal budget are constrained; the TPA3116D2DADR's HTSSOP-32 PowerPAD package mounts flush to the PCB, and its high switching efficiency eliminates heatsink protrusion. AM-avoidance modulation prevents switching harmonics from interfering with tuners in TV systems, and integrated short-circuit plus thermal shutdown protects against speaker-line faults. A 19-24 V adapter input supports full 2 x 50 W output for premium 2.1-channel bars.
Recommended
Portable PA and Karaoke Systems
Portable PA and karaoke amplifiers need high output from a single 12 V or 24 V battery/adapter rail. The TPA3116D2DADR delivers 100 W mono into 2 ohms or 2 x 50 W into 4 ohms directly from these rails without a boost converter. Its efficiency preserves battery runtime, and the master/slave-capable architecture allows two devices to be paralleled into larger four-channel systems with shared clocking and gain structure.
Recommended
Automotive Infotainment Audio
For automotive speaker zones and aftermarket amplifiers, the pin-compatible TPA3116D2QDADRQ1 variant carries AEC-Q100 qualification while sharing the standard part's 2 x 50 W output and 4.5-26 V supply that tolerates 12 V battery cold-crank and load-dump conditions with suitable front-end protection. SpeakerGuard prevents driver damage during transients, and thermal shutdown protects against enclosed-module overheating in dashboard installations.
Recommended
Multichannel Home Theater Amplifiers
Budget AV receivers and multichannel plate amplifiers use multiple TPA3116D2DADR channels on a shared 24 V supply to build 4.1 or 5.1 systems at low cost per watt. Each device adds only a few watts of dissipation, so a single fanless chassis can house four to six channels. The analog input architecture integrates simply with existing volume-control and DSP front ends without needing I2S or digital-input infrastructure.
Recommended
Industrial and Commercial Announcement Systems
Factory paging, kiosk, and commercial announcement amplifiers benefit from the TPA3116D2DADR's wide 4.5-26 V input tolerance and robust integrated protections. Short-circuit tolerance survives speaker-line faults common in long cable runs, and undervoltage lockout prevents false operation during supply dips. The 100 W mono 2-ohm mode drives multiple parallel horn speakers from one channel, and high efficiency suits always-on 24/7 operation without heatsink maintenance.

Design Notes
Solder the HTSSOP-32 PowerPAD to a continuous ground pour with an array of thermal vias (typically 3x3 or 4x4, 0.3 mm drill) connecting to inner/bottom copper layers. At 2 x 50 W with >85% efficiency, dissipation is roughly 10-15 W worst case at low supply frequencies of high crest-factor audio; copper area, not a heatsink, is the primary thermal path per TI application guidance in the TPA31xxD2 datasheet.
Decouple each PVCC pair with at least a 10 uF bulk electrolytic/polymer plus 0.1 uF ceramic placed within 5 mm of the pins. At high output currents into 4 ohms, supply ripple couples into the audio band; a 470 uF to 1000 uF bulk reservoir near the amplifier reduces bass distortion. AVCC must be filtered with an RC (e.g., 10 ohm + 1 uF) from PVCC to keep the analog section clean.
Although filter-free, long speaker cables can radiate switching harmonics. Place a ferrite bead (e.g., 600 ohm at 100 MHz) in series with each output and keep the PVCC-to-output loop area minimal. The AM-avoidance scheme helps, but routing speaker traces as tight pairs away from input lines prevents AM-band and RF pickup. Reference TI's TPA31xxD2 layout guidelines section of the datasheet.
Do not float the SD (shutdown) pin - tie it to AVCC through a pull-up or control it actively or the amplifier stays off. Ensure GVDD_DET bootstrap capacitors are populated per datasheet values; omitting them causes output glitching at startup. When driving 2-ohm mono loads, verify PVCC trace width for peak currents exceeding 5 A.
Compliance Information
RoHS compliant and lead-free per TI product page and DigiKey listing. AEC-Q100 applies only to the TPA3116D2QDADRQ1 variant.
