ADC1175-50CIJM Visão geral

The Texas Instruments ADC1175-50CIJM is an 8-bit, 50 MSPS analog-to-digital converter that consumes only 125 mW (typical) of power, housed in a 24-pin SOIC package. It digitizes analog signals to 8 bits while delivering 6.8 Effective Bits at 25 MHz input frequency and 50 MHz clock, with a conversion time of 0.02 microseconds. Operating from a 5 V analog and 5 V digital supply, the device supports both external and internal voltage references with the top and bottom of the reference ladder brought out for flexible input scaling.

An ADC (analog-to-digital converter) is a mixed-signal integrated circuit that samples continuous analog voltages and converts them into discrete digital codes, enabling microprocessors, DSPs, and FPGAs to process real-world signals. ADC1175-50CIJM sits in the high-speed video/imaging ADC hierarchy (pipeline > two-step > flash-assisted architecture), belongs to TI's broad ADC portfolio, and serves as a 'glue' between an analog front end and a digital signal processor in compact systems.

Key differentiating specifications include the unique two-step architecture that achieves a 6.8 Effective Number of Bits (ENOB) at Nyquist, low 7 pF input capacitance that simplifies front-end driver design versus conventional flash converters, and a power-down mode that reduces consumption below 5 mW between samples. The parallel data interface supports single-channel, single-rank conversion at 50M samples per second, making it especially attractive for portable imaging, video digitizers, and low-power instrumentation.

The architecture uses an internal sample-and-hold stage followed by a two-step coarse/fine quantizer, achieving a useful dynamic range at substantially lower power and cost than full-flash implementations. Internally the device provides a stable reference ladder with selectable top/bottom taps, allowing the user to optimize the input range against the analog signal swing without external resistor dividers. Designers should pay particular attention to the analog and digital supply decoupling network; the data sheet recommends placing 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors as close as possible to each AVDD/DVDD pin and providing a small ferrite bead between the analog and digital rails to minimize clock-feedthrough noise. Power-supply bypass on the reference ladder pin is equally critical because reference noise directly translates into conversion noise.

Typical applications include NTSC/PAL video digitizers, portable imaging front ends, low-cost digital oscilloscopes, IF/baseband digitizing for software-defined radio, and high-speed data acquisition cards for industrial control. Designers select this part when they need the absolute lowest power dissipation for an 8-bit, 50 MSPS ADC in a small surface-mount footprint, or when 6.8 ENOB at Nyquist is sufficient for downstream processing.

When designing in this part, evaluate analog input bandwidth against the 7 pF input capacitance - source impedance must remain below the data sheet limit or harmonic distortion rises sharply at high input frequencies. Layout note: keep the analog input trace short and routed over a continuous ground plane; the 24-SOIC exposed-pad variant (CIJMX suffix in WQFN) further reduces thermal resistance and should be chosen if continuous 50 MSPS operation is required in enclosed enclosures.

Aplicações típicas

ADC1175-50CIJM é adequado para 6 aplicaçãos: NTSC/PAL Video Digitizer, Portable Imaging Front End, Low-Cost Digital Oscilloscope Channel, IF / Baseband Digitizer for Software-Defined Radio, Industrial Data Acquisition Card, Ultrasonic / Medical Imaging Front End (Non-Safety).

🎥

NTSC/PAL Video Digitizer

The Texas Instruments ADC1175-50CIJM is ideally suited to NTSC/PAL video digitizers because its 50 MSPS sample rate provides roughly 2x oversampling on standard-definition video (~27 MHz analog bandwidth), capturing 8-bit color luminance/chrominance without aliasing. The 7 pF input capacitance eases the design of the 5th-order anti-alias filter placed ahead of the ADC, simplifying the analog front end and lowering BOM cost. With 125 mW typical dissipation and <5 mW power-down mode, this ADC fits portable digital video recorders and set-top box front-ends where heat and battery life matter. Engineers typically drive IN with an op-amp buffer (e.g. THS7372 or OPA2353), tie VRT=1.0 V and VRB=0 V to use the internal reference ladder, and route D0-D7 directly into a video processor FPGA or ASIC. The 6.8 ENOB at 25 MHz is sufficient for consumer-quality 8-bit broadcast compliance, while the parallel data interface removes the latency of serial LVDS ADCs at the same price.

📱

Portable Imaging Front End

The ADC1175-50CIJM serves as the digitizing stage in portable imaging front ends (digital cameras, document scanners, endoscope camera heads) where its 8-bit resolution and 50 MSPS rate accommodate standard 480p/60 video streams. The 125 mW typical power keeps the converter cool in hand-held plastic enclosures without a heat sink, and the <5 mW power-down current extends battery life between bursts. Designers typically pair it with TI's TPS76701 LDO to provide a quiet 5 V analog supply and route the 8-bit parallel bus through level shifters into a mobile DSP such as the TMS320C55x or an ARM Cortex-M4 application processor. The low 7 pF input capacitance means inexpensive op-amps can drive the input directly, allowing compact multi-layer PCBs under 50 mm x 50 mm. The two-step architecture also holds spurious-free dynamic range above 50 dB for clean professional camera previews.

🔬

Low-Cost Digital Oscilloscope Channel

The ADC1175-50CIJM is an excellent fit for low-cost 100 MHz-class digital oscilloscopes targeting the educational, hobby, and field-service markets. At 50 MSPS it provides 25 MHz single-shot analog bandwidth (Nyquist), which meets the price-point demands of USB-attached scope probes, and its 6.8 ENOB is sufficient for the 8-bit vertical resolution users expect at this tier. The internal sample-and-hold and the option to drive an external reference enable ratiometric current or voltage measurements, while the simple parallel data bus reduces FPGA gate count relative to LVDS serial ADCs. References designs can connect ADC1175-50CIJM directly to a low-cost Cyclone IV or Spartan-6 FPGA, push samples into on-chip block RAM, and stream via USB to a host PC, keeping the BOM under $20 per analog channel. The 125 mW dissipation allows fan-less operation in sealed plastic scope enclosures for educational test equipment.

🌐

IF / Baseband Digitizer for Software-Defined Radio

The Texas Instruments ADC1175-50CIJM is widely deployed in the IF/baseband stage of low-cost software-defined radio receivers and signal analyzers, where its 50 MSPS rate easily covers 0-25 MHz of baseband bandwidth for narrowband protocols (FM, DVB, ISDB-T, LTE test). The 8-bit dynamic range is sufficient for digital demodulation after digital gain control, and the 6.8 ENOB at 25 MHz input preserves modulation accuracy for AM/FM/QPSK. The internal reference ladder with externally accessible top/bottom taps allows operators to optimize full-scale for low-IF signals in the 0.5-2 V range without external resistor dividers. Typical SDR front ends place the ADC at the output of an I/Q down-conversion mixer (e.g. ADL5380 family) with passive anti-alias filtering, then stream 8-bit samples into an FPGA (e.g. Cyclone IV) or a host processor via parallel DMA. The <5 mW power-down mode enables duty-cycled scanning in spectrum-analyzer sweep mode.

🏭

Industrial Data Acquisition Card

Industrial multi-channel data acquisition cards (PCI, PXI, USB-DAQ) commonly use the ADC1175-50CIJM for cost-sensitive 8-channel, 50 kSPS-per-channel aggregated architectures. Eight ADC1175-50CIJMs time-multiplexed on a shared 50 MHz clock yield 6.25 MSPS per channel aggregate, well-suited for vibration analysis, ultrasonic flaw detection, and machine condition monitoring. The 5 V single-supply rail simplifies backplane power design, while the 24-SOIC footprint is friendly to high-density multi-layer backplanes. Industrial designers often qualify the part down to -20 C with derating and add a low-dropout post-regulator plus ferrite beads for analog/digital isolation. The ENOB figure of 6.8 bits is consistent with measurement sensitivity down to ~2 mV around full-scale, enough for many process-control transducers without further oversampling.

💊

Ultrasonic / Medical Imaging Front End (Non-Safety)

The ADC1175-50CIJM can serve as the front-end digitizer for low-cost B-mode ultrasonic or veterinary imaging pre-amps where 8-bit resolution at 50 MSPS is sufficient for general-purpose measurements. The 7 pF input capacitance integrates cleanly with the piezoelectric transducer preamplifier chain, while the low power dissipation (125 mW) allows densely populated transducer arrays without active cooling. The internal sample-and-hold preserves phase coherence across channels when synchronized to an external conversion clock, enabling beamforming in the downstream FPGA. Designers typically place the ADC at the apex of the analog chain after the LNA and TGC (time-gain-compensation) stages, with careful ground partitioning between transducer analog and digital sections. Note: safety-critical medical imaging (IEC 60601) requires a higher-resolution, isolated ADC path - this part suits non-life-support instrument variants only.

Guia de seleção

Choose the Texas Instruments ADC1175-50CIJM in 24-SOIC when designing a new 8-bit / 50 MSPS data acquisition path and you need a low-power (~125 mW), proven part with broad distributor stock and second-source data. Pick the same-die ADC1175-50CIMT (TSSOP) for thinner PCB stack-ups or hand prototyping, and the ADC1175-50CIJMX (WFQFN with exposed pad) where thermal performance or board density matter most. For higher ENOB (>7 bits effective) or >50 MSPS sample rates, migrate to a 10/12-bit TI pipeline ADC instead (e.g. ADS831 family); the ADC1175 family is the right call only when 8-bit resolution and <150 mW power are explicitly acceptable trade-offs. For Lab/evaluation only, the ADC1175-50EVAL board accelerates system bring-up and signal-integrity characterization.

Notas de projeto

Estimated: at AVDD=5 V, DVDD=5 V with the ADC1175-50CIJM drawing 125 mW total, decoupling budget calls for 0.1 uF X7R ceramics on each analog and digital supply pin placed within 5 mm of the package body. A larger 10 uF tantalum or polymer bulk cap near the IC supplies transient current at clock edges. Use a ferrite bead (e.g. BLM31P, ~600 ohm at 100 MHz) between the analog rail and the 5 V upstream LDO to attenuate digital switching noise. Decouple VRT and VRB to AGND with 0.1 uF plus 10 uF bulk capacitors - these reference ladder nodes are noise sensitive and directly convert jitter into conversion noise.

Recommended: separate analog and digital ground regions with a single star-ground tie under the ADC1175-50CIJM package. Route the CLK trace with 50 ohm characteristic impedance and keep it short; terminations may be required for clean 50 MSPS operation to avoid sub-sampled glitches. The analog input trace should also be impedance-controlled and kept under 10 mm; place the input series damping resistor within 2 mm of the IN pin to absorb package parasitic resonance at ~1 GHz. Avoid running parallel digital output buses under the analog input trace to minimize digital-to-analog coupling.

Critical: do not exceed the 5 V analog supply rail - the ADC1175-50CIJM is not 3.3 V tolerant on AVDD/DVDD. Do not apply a clock above 50 MSPS; harmonic distortion rises sharply and ENOB drops below 6 bits. Do not load the parallel data bus above 15 pF per pin or sample-to-sample timing margins collapse. The OE pin must be tied low during power-up to keep outputs in high-Z until logic is stable. Driving IN with a source impedance above the datasheet limit (typically 100 ohm) degrades harmonic performance severely at >10 MHz input.
