STM32F373RBT6 Présentation

The STMicroelectronics STM32F373RBT6 is a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller with FPU, running up to 72 MHz, integrating 128 KB of Flash and 24 KB of SRAM, and housed in a 64-pin LQFP (10x10 mm) package. The device belongs to the STM32F3 mainstream mixed-signal family and is specified for an industrial-grade 2.0-3.6 V supply, with five low-power modes including Standby (1.9 µA typ.) and Stop (3.5 µA typ.). The part integrates a 12-bit ADC (1 MSPS, up to 16 channels) and three 12-bit DAC channels, four general-purpose 16-bit timers, two 16-bit motor-control timers, USB 2.0 Full-Speed device, CAN 2.0B, I2C, SPI, and USART/UART peripherals.

An MCU (microcontroller) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (Flash), data memory (SRAM), and a rich set of peripherals such as ADCs, timers, and communication interfaces. Within the system hierarchy it sits between a microprocessor (which needs external memory) and a custom ASIC; the STM32 family hierarchy is: Cortex-M4 core -> STM32F3 series -> STM32F373 sub-line -> STM32F373RB part. Mixed-signal MCUs like the F3 series are particularly suited to applications requiring simultaneous precision analog conversion and deterministic real-time control.

Key features of the STM32F373RBT6 include the Cortex-M4 with single-precision FPU and DSP instructions, an MPU for memory protection, a 4 KB backup SRAM domain with VBAT operation, and a fast 12-bit ADC with programmable resolution and oversampling. The triple 12-bit DAC enables waveform generation without external converters, while the USB Full-Speed device interface supports battery-charging detection (BC1.2). Internal oscillators include a factory-trimmed 8 MHz HSI (1% accuracy) and a 40 kHz LSI for RTC and watchdog, eliminating the need for external crystals in many designs.

Architecturally the device uses a multi-AHB bus matrix that allows independent DMA-controlled data movement between peripherals and SRAM, offloading the CPU and enabling deterministic response at 72 MHz. The Flash interface supports read-while-write and a 128-bit prefetch buffer that effectively hides Flash latency at zero wait-state access up to 24 MHz and 1 wait-state above. The temperature range is -40 °C to +85 °C (grade 6) or +105 °C (grade 7), and ESD HBM is 2 kV with CDM 500 V, conforming to industrial robustness expectations.

Typical applications include motor-control inverter stages (BLDC, PMSM, FOC), industrial sensor-conditioning front-ends that combine op-amp gain stages with built-in 12-bit ADC, USB HID peripherals such as game controllers and test equipment, CAN-based automotive body controllers, and precision instrumentation with simultaneous analog acquisition. The 64-pin LQFP is a popular footprint that gives access to most peripherals while remaining hand-solderable for prototypes.

When designing with the STM32F373RBT6, ensure that the VDDA/VREF+ analog supply is decoupled with a 1 µF X7R ceramic plus a 10 nF X7R near the pin to keep the 12-bit ADC and DAC rail-noise contribution below the LSB at full rate; the application notes AN3216 and AN3225 describe recommended PCB layouts. USB design should follow the 90-ohm differential impedance rule for D+/D- and the DP pull-up of 1.5 kΩ to 3.3 V should be added only when the host signals connect. With VBAT, a 1 nF ceramic and a 100 nF bulk capacitor are required to handle RTC backup battery hot-plug events.

Applications typiques

STM32F373RBT6 convient pour 7 applications: BLDC / PMSM Motor Control, Industrial Sensor Conditioning, USB HID Peripheral Devices, CAN-Based Automotive Body Modules, Precision Instrumentation, Power Conversion Digital Control, Consumer Audio / DAC Front-End.

🏭

BLDC / PMSM Motor Control

The STM32F373RBT6's Cortex-M4 with FPU and the dual 16-bit motor-control timers make it ideal for field-oriented control (FOC) of brushless DC and permanent-magnet synchronous motors. The three 12-bit DACs (3 DAC channels vs 1 on the F302) allow simultaneous three-phase current-setpoint generation, while the 1 MSPS 12-bit ADC samples shunt resistors at the 72 MHz cycle time needed for FOC math. Two 16-bit motor-control timers with complementary PWM outputs and dead-time insertion reduce external component count, and the FPU executes a complete FOC loop in roughly 15 µs, leaving headroom for additional housekeeping. The 64-LQFP package gives access to all three complementary-PWM channels plus three ADC inputs for current sensing.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Conditioning

The STM32F373RBT6 combines a 12-bit ADC with 16 input channels and three 12-bit DACs, making it well suited to industrial 4-20 mA loop transmitters and bridge-sensor conditioning. The 1 MSPS ADC with programmable oversampling achieves effective resolution beyond 12 bits for low-bandwidth signals such as strain-gauge bridges, thermocouples, or RTDs. The DACs generate excitation or trim voltages without external references, while the USB and CAN interfaces allow the conditioned sensor to participate in factory-floor networks. Operating from 2.0-3.6 V with -40 to +85 C industrial temperature grade ensures deployment in unconditioned panels.

🎧

USB HID Peripheral Devices

The STM32F373RBT6 integrates a USB 2.0 Full-Speed device peripheral with on-chip PHY and battery-charging detection, so game controllers, HID input devices, and USB test instruments can be built without external USB chips. The 128 KB Flash holds typical USB HID stacks (4-12 KB), composite-device descriptors, and a bootloader (DFU). The 72 MHz Cortex-M4 with single-cycle 32-bit multiplication delivers deterministic 1 ms USB polling rate even with simultaneous user I/O processing, and the 51 GPIO pins in the 64-LQFP package provide ample matrix-scanning capacity for keyboards or encoders.

🚗

CAN-Based Automotive Body Modules

The STM32F373RBT6's on-chip CAN 2.0B peripheral with 11-bit and 29-bit identifier support, combined with its 72 MHz Cortex-M4 core and 128 KB Flash, suits low-speed CAN body controllers such as door modules, seat controllers, mirror adjusters, and HVAC actuators. The CAN bit-rate flexibility supports both 125 kbps body-comfort networks and 500 kbps powertrain clusters. The 64-LQFP package has 5V-tolerant I/O tolerant to automotive 12V bus transients when paired with external TVS diodes, and the industrial -40 to +85 C temperature grade covers cabin environments; for under-hood nodes above 85 C, consider the STM32F373RCT7 grade-7 variant.

🔬

Precision Instrumentation

The STM32F373RBT6's 12-bit ADC with hardware oversampling can deliver effective resolution beyond 14 bits for DC measurements, making it suitable for bench-top multimeters, bench-test equipment, and laboratory data loggers. The three 12-bit DACs generate programmable stimulus signals for sensor calibration, while the 24 KB SRAM buffers up to 8,000 12-bit samples without CPU intervention. The USB FS device interface presents the instrument as a CDC virtual COM port or HID, while the 64-LQFP exposes enough GPIO to drive 4x4 keypad matrixes and 4-digit seven-segment displays simultaneously.

⚡

Power Conversion Digital Control

The STM32F373RBT6 is well matched to digital control of switch-mode power supplies and PFC stages. The high-resolution timer inputs can trigger ADC conversions at the exact switching cycle center, while the FPU executes digital-compensator math at 72 MHz without overflow concerns. The three 12-bit DACs adjust reference levels for adaptive voltage positioning and slope compensation, and the 1 MSPS ADC closes voltage and current loops simultaneously at 100 kHz PWM. With USB device support the PSU can expose telemetry and firmware-update channels over USB.

🎧

Consumer Audio / DAC Front-End

Although the STM32F373RBT6 is not an audio DSP, its three 12-bit DACs and the 1 MSPS ADC make it a useful audio front-end for toys, intercoms, and entry-level sound modules. The USB FS device interface supports USB Audio Class 1.0 device mode for simple USB speakers or headsets when paired with an external codec, while the I2S peripheral streams digital audio to the codec. The 128 KB Flash accommodates small audio mixing and EQ firmware without external memory.

Notes de conception

Estimated: at 72 MHz with all peripherals active, the STM32F373RBT6 core VDD current is approximately 32 mA at 3.3 V (about 105 mW). Add another 30-50 mA for I/O switching; place a 100 nF X7R bypass within 5 mm of each VDD pin plus a 4.7 µF bulk at the regulator. VDDA/VREF+ must be decoupled with a 1 µF X7R and a 10 nF NP0 directly at the pin, otherwise ADC linearity suffers at 1 MSPS. For USB operation keep the 3.3 V rail within ±5% and the AVDD analog rail within ±1% to meet USB signaling tolerances.

Route USB D+/D- as a 90 Ω differential pair with the maximum matched length of 30 mm; keep them away from switching signals. Use a four-layer PCB with a continuous ground plane under the LQFP and stitch the thermal pad (if any) with 9-vias to the inner ground plane. Decoupling capacitors should use wide, short traces (less than 2 mm) and never share ground vias with signal traces. The HSE crystal trace length should be less than 5 mm and guarded by ground.

The STM32F373RBT6 has 5V-tolerant I/O but only on pins marked as 5V tolerant in the datasheet; injecting 5V into non-tolerant pins (such as the USB D+/D- lines) can damage the device. Always set BOOT0 low for normal operation and high only for bootloader mode; if BOOT0 is left floating, the device may enter bootloader randomly. The LSE crystal requires a load capacitor of 5-15 pF per pin matching the crystal's specified CL; a mismatch causes RTC drift of several seconds per day.

For high-speed SPI at 18 MHz or above, keep the SCK/MOSI/MISO trace lengths matched within 10 mm and use series resistors of 22-33 Ω to dampen ringing. CAN bus needs a 120 Ω termination at each end of the bus; the F373 internal slope-control feature allows bit rates up to 1 Mbit/s without external transceivers for short networks, but for industrial CAN use external transceivers like SN65HVD230 for noise immunity.
