ATTINY816-SNR Overview

The Microchip Technology ATTINY816-SNR is a member of the tinyAVR 1-series of 8-bit AVR RISC microcontrollers, featuring an AVR processor with hardware multiplier running at up to 20 MHz, with 8 KB of Flash, 512 bytes of SRAM, and 128 bytes of EEPROM in a 20-pin SOIC package. The device integrates Functional Safety (FuSa) features and Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) that allow tasks such as sensor interfacing, signal conditioning, and actuator control to run without CPU intervention, dramatically reducing code complexity and power consumption.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a small, self-contained computing system on a single integrated circuit that integrates a CPU, RAM, non-volatile program memory, and a rich set of peripheral interfaces. Within the broader taxonomy, the ATTINY816 belongs to the tinyAVR subfamily of AVR RISC microcontrollers -> 8-bit MCU family -> microcontroller -> embedded IC -> semiconductor. The "tiny" prefix denotes the lowest-pin-count, lowest-power tier of the AVR family, typically used where cost, board area, and battery life dominate over raw processing throughput.

Key features of the ATTINY816-SNR include the Event System and SleepWalking peripherals for ultra-low-power autonomous operation, a Peripheral Touch Controller (PTC) supporting capacitive touch sensing, a 10-bit ADC, configurable custom logic, and a 16-bit timer with three compare channels. The 20 MHz maximum clock, 8 KB self-programmable Flash, and 512 B SRAM support modest control loops and communication stacks including I2C, SPI, and UART.

Architecture-wise, the part uses the modern tinyAVR 1-series core which adds a hardware multiplier (single-cycle 8x8 multiply), a more deterministic interrupt controller, and improved low-power modes versus legacy ATtiny parts. The integrated 20 MHz internal oscillator eliminates the need for an external crystal in most applications, saving two PCB pins and BOM cost.

Typical applications include capacitive touch user interfaces, LED lighting controllers, low-power IoT sensor nodes, consumer appliances, battery-powered toys, and functional-safety-relevant embedded systems. The wide 1.8V to 5.5V supply range allows direct operation from a single Li-ion cell or from 3.3V/5V digital rails.

Design consideration: vertical migration within the tinyAVR 1-series (ATtiny416, ATtiny816, ATtiny1614, ATtiny3216) is pin-compatible, so a PCB designed for ATtiny816 will accept larger-Flash siblings without layout changes.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, drop-in alternatives, and practical design notes not found in the manufacturer datasheet, providing information gain beyond what DigiKey, Mouser, and Octopart offer individually.

Selection Guide

Choose the ATTINY816-SNR when you need an 8-bit AVR MCU with capacitive touch, modest 8 KB Flash, and a hand-solderable SOIC-20 footprint. Pick the ATTINY416-SNR as a lower-cost 4 KB Flash drop-in for cost-sensitive designs whose firmware fits under 4 KB. Pick the ATTINY1614-SNR or ATTINY1616-SNR for upward migration when firmware grows beyond 8 KB Flash or 512 B SRAM - they share the same SOIC-20 footprint and pinout, so PCB redesign is unnecessary. For space-constrained designs where 18 GPIO is excessive, consider the smaller QFN-20 ATTINY816-MNR or SOIC-8 ATTINY412-SSNR. For designs needing USB, DMA, or significantly more peripherals, evaluate the ATSAM D21 family or PIC18F-Q series instead, but plan for a different toolchain and pinout.

  • 1.8 V to 5.5 V supply range supports battery and 5V rails (vs PIC18F25Q43-I/STX)

Design Notes

Place a 100 nF decoupling capacitor as close as physically possible between VCC (pin 1) and GND (pin 6 or 13), plus a 10 uF bulk capacitor on the same net near the MCU. The tinyAVR 1-series Event System and SleepWalking can drive Sleep current into the microampere range, so a clean supply is critical to achieving the datasheet Sleep figures. Avoid sharing the ADC reference pin with high-current digital loads.

The UPDI pin (pin 19) is the single-wire Unified Program and Debug Interface for both in-system programming and on-chip debugging. Route a 1 kohm series resistor on the UPDI line close to the MCU to allow reliable programming through long cables or isolation barriers. Expose the UPDI, VCC, and GND on a 3-pin test header so a pymcuprog or MPLAB Snap can attach without disturbing the rest of the PCB.

Estimated: the ATTINY816's internal 20 MHz oscillator is factory-calibrated to +/- 2% across 0C to 70C but can drift to +/- 5% across the full -40C to +125C industrial range. For UART links above 115200 baud or for time-sensitive protocols, plan for either an external crystal (where pin resources permit) or periodic software calibration against a host reference. Also, never drive RESET (pin 18) high directly without a 10 kohm pull-up; floating the pin in noisy environments will cause spurious resets and unreliable firmware startup.

The UPDI single-wire programming interface is shared with GPIO functionality on PA0. When designing the PCB, leave a 0 ohm series resistor or solder bridge on the UPDI trace so the line can be isolated from external circuitry during programming. Likewise, place the PTC touch sensor traces on the opposite side of the PCB from noisy switching rails to keep the touch sensitivity margin stable; shield the touch lines with a hatched ground pour if the enclosure is metal.
