DSPIC30F5011T-30I/PT Overview
What is a Digital Signal Controller? A DSC is a hybrid between a microcontroller (MCU) and a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). The MCU side provides deterministic interrupt response and rich peripherals (timers, UART, SPI, I2C, CAN), while the DSP side adds a single-cycle MAC unit, barrel shifter, and dual 40-bit accumulators so that the core can execute FIR/IIR filters, FFTs, and PID loops in real time. In the system hierarchy, the DSC sits between a generic MCU and a standalone DSP, giving designers a single-chip solution for closed-loop motor control, audio processing, and power conversion that previously required a controller + DSP pair.
Key features of the DSPIC30F5011 include a 30 MIPS modified Harvard core, hardware multiply-accumulate for single-cycle DSP operations, a 12-bit 200 ksps ADC with up to 16 channels, motor-control PWM with dedicated fault inputs, and CAN/UART/SPI/I2C communication peripherals. It supports 2.5 V to 5.5 V operation across an industrial -40 C to +85 C temperature range, and includes JTAG/ICSP for in-circuit debug.
The architecture uses a 16-bit modified Harvard core with separate program and data buses, plus a DSP engine that lets C-compiler-generated code reach near-assembly efficiency on filter math. A 30 MIPS instruction throughput gives the headroom to run 10 kHz+ control loops while leaving CPU time for housekeeping.
Typical applications include BLDC and PMSM motor control (sensored or sensorless), three-phase UPS and power inverter control, audio processing and active noise cancellation, sensor signal conditioning, and industrial automation PLC modules. The integrated motor-control PWM and 12-bit ADC make it a single-chip solution for FOC and trapezoidal commutation.
When designing with this part, allocate the 52 GPIO pins across analog inputs, PWM outputs, encoder feedback, and communications. Use the DSP engine for math-heavy loops and reserve the main CPU for state machines and communication stacks. Plan the PCB layout so the analog AVSS/AVDD pair is decoupled separately from the digital supply and routed on a quiet ground island.

Typical Applications
DSPIC30F5011T-30I/PT is suitable for 6 applications: BLDC / PMSM Motor Control, Three-Phase Power Inverter and UPS, Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning, Audio Processing and Active Noise Cancellation, Automotive Body and Sensor Modules, Industrial Automation PLC Modules.
BLDC / PMSM Motor Control
The DSPIC30F5011's Motor-Control PWM with dedicated fault inputs and 12-bit 200 ksps ADC enables single-chip Field-Oriented Control of three-phase BLDC and PMSM motors. The DSP engine executes Park/Clarke transforms and PI loops in single-cycle MAC, leaving CPU bandwidth for CAN/UART comms. QEI inputs accept incremental encoder feedback; analog inputs AN0-AN15 read phase currents via op-amp networks. With 30 MIPS and 4 KB RAM, control loop rates above 20 kHz are practical.
Recommended
Three-Phase Power Inverter and UPS
For solar inverters, UPS stages, and three-phase PFC, the DSPIC30F5011 supplies dedicated PWM with programmable dead-time and analog comparators for cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The 16-channel 12-bit ADC reads DC-bus voltage, phase currents, and temperature simultaneously. Its 2.5-5.5 V tolerance allows direct interface to 5V gate drivers, and 30 MIPS supports space-vector modulation plus closed-loop voltage regulation on a single core.
Recommended
Industrial Sensor Signal Conditioning
When a design needs FIR or IIR filtering of multi-channel sensor data plus UART/CAN reporting, the DSPIC30F5011 combines 16 ADC channels, dual 40-bit DSP accumulators, and 4 KB RAM in one package. It can sample up to 200 ksps and run 50-tap FIR filters per channel without CPU saturation. The 5V GPIO tolerance interfaces directly to legacy industrial sensors and 24V-conditioned PLC backplanes via simple resistor dividers.
Recommended
Audio Processing and Active Noise Cancellation
Audio applications benefit from the DSPIC30F5011's single-cycle MAC, which executes biquad and LMS adaptive filters at sample rates up to 48 kHz. The 12-bit ADC captures microphone inputs while PWM outputs drive Class-D amplifiers. With 4 KB RAM, time-domain and frequency-domain algorithms run in parallel without external memory. CAN or SPI links to a host processor for configuration updates.
Recommended
Automotive Body and Sensor Modules
Within non-safety automotive body controllers (lighting, seat control, mirror modules, generic sensor ECUs), the DSPIC30F5011 provides CAN connectivity, 52 GPIO for switches and actuators, and a 12-bit ADC for current/voltage monitoring. Industrial temperature grade is sufficient for cabin environments. Designers needing -40 C to +125 C AEC-Q100 must migrate to an AEC-Q100-qualified sibling rather than this part.
Recommended
Industrial Automation PLC Modules
As a peripheral module in a PLC rack, the DSPIC30F5011 handles analog input scanning (16 channels at 12 bits), digital I/O expansion via its 52 GPIOs, and CAN/Ethernet bridging to the central controller. The DSP engine accelerates moving-average and notch filters for 50/60 Hz mains rejection. Its 5V tolerance avoids level shifters when interfacing to legacy 24V PLC backplanes via opto-isolators.

Key Differentiators
- Single-chip 30 MIPS DSP engine with MCU peripherals (vs DSP56F803BU80E (NXP 56800 core))
- 5V-tolerant I/O without external level shifters (vs dsPIC33FJ series (3.3V I/O))
- Pin-compatible upgrade path to higher-memory variant (vs DSPIC30F5013-30I/PT (TQFP-64))
Design Notes
Decouple each VDD/VSS pair with a 100 nF ceramic placed within 5 mm of the pin, and add a bulk 10 uF tantalum or aluminum-polymer cap near the package. The DSPIC30F5011 has separate AVDD/AVSS rails; decouple them with their own 100 nF cap and tie them to the digital rails only at one point to avoid ground loops. Brown-out reset is enabled in configuration bits to protect Flash from low-voltage writes.
Route the analog input traces AN0-AN15 over a continuous analog ground plane and keep them short to minimize ADC noise pickup. Keep PWM outputs and high-current traces away from the oscillator pins OSCI/OSCO. Place the crystal within 10 mm of the OSC pins with a grounded guard ring on the outer sides, and keep the ICSP lines PGC/PGD away from switching signals to prevent in-circuit debug glitches.
The DSPIC30F5011 is 5V tolerant on most digital I/O but the analog inputs must not exceed AVDD + 0.3 V or accuracy degrades. MCLR must have a 10 kohm pull-up to VDD; floating MCLR causes random resets. Configuration bits must be set correctly for oscillator mode, watchdog timer, and code protection before code will execute reliably; refer to the dsPIC30F family reference manual section on configuration.
Compliance Information
