PIC16C67T-04E/PQ Overview

The Microchip Technology PIC16C67T-04E/PQ is an 8-bit PIC® 16C-series microcontroller built on a fully-static CMOS process and housed in a 44-pin MQFP (10x10 mm) package with surface-mount termination. The device integrates 14KB (8K x 14) of One-Time Programmable (OTP) program memory, 368 bytes of data RAM, and operates at a 4 MHz oscillator input with the "-04" speed grade. It is offered in the "E" extended temperature variant and supplied on tape-and-reel ("T") packaging. As a member of the PIC16C6X mid-range family, the PIC16C67 is one of the largest-memory parts in that lineage before the PIC16C7X series.

A microcontroller (MCU) is a single-chip computer that integrates a CPU core, program memory (ROM/OTP/Flash), working RAM, peripheral modules, and I/O on one die. The PIC16C6X family uses Microchip's enhanced mid-range 8-bit RISC core with 35 single-word instructions, an 8-level deep hardware stack, and a Harvard bus architecture that separates program and data paths. PIC microcontrollers sit inside the broader category hierarchy: microcontroller -> embedded processor -> semiconductor device -> integrated circuit, and dominate cost-sensitive 8-bit embedded designs.

Key features of the PIC16C67T-04E/PQ include 33 digital I/O pins arranged across multiple ports, three timer/counter modules (Timer0, Timer1, Timer2), a USART module for asynchronous/synchronous serial communications, a 10-bit (typically) or 8-bit ADC channel set on related variants, and a watchdog timer with its own on-chip RC oscillator for reliable recovery. The device supports in-circuit serial programming (ICSP) via the RB6/RB7 pins and operates from a 2.5 V to 6.0 V supply. With only 35 instructions and deterministic single-cycle execution (200 ns at 20 MHz, 1 us at 4 MHz), the part is friendly to assembler and C development using MPLAB IDE and the MPASM/MPLAB XC toolchains.

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ uses the PIC16C6X core architecture with a 14-bit instruction word, an 8-bit data path, and separate program/data buses (Harvard). Internal peripherals are memory-mapped; the USART, timers, and interrupt controller share a common interrupt vector. The OTP program memory is windowless - once programmed, it cannot be erased, making the part suitable for low-cost production runs where field updates are not required and for legacy industrial installations where the firmware has been frozen for many years.

Typical applications include industrial control panels, sensor-interface boards, motor-control front-ends, simple human-machine interface (HMI) keypads, automotive body controllers (non-safety), and consumer appliance main boards. The 33 I/O pins comfortably drive multiple key-scan matrices, LED indicator rows, and UART-linked peripherals in a single chip without external glue logic.

When designing with this part, note that the OTP memory requires production-grade programming on the MPLAB PM3 or equivalent before PCB assembly - the part cannot be re-programmed in the field. Engineers should also budget for the larger MQFP-44 footprint (10x10 mm) compared to modern 8-bit MCUs available in SOIC or QFN packages, and confirm that the 4 MHz oscillator limit of the "-04" speed grade meets timing requirements.

Typical Applications

PIC16C67T-04E/PQ is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial Control Panels, Sensor Interface Front-Ends, Motor Control Front-Ends, HMI Keypad and LED Controller, Consumer Appliance Main Board, Automotive Body Controller (Non-Safety).

🏭

Industrial Control Panels

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ is well-suited to industrial control panels where a deterministic 8-bit core, 33 I/O lines, and a USART for Modbus or RS-485 links are required. With 14 KB of OTP program memory the part holds mid-sized control loops, key-scan matrices, and indicator-LED multiplexing tables without external memory. The 4 MHz oscillator input yields a 1 us instruction cycle, which is fast enough for periodic scan loops at 10-100 ms. Compared with a switching regulator the linear 5 V rail is fine because panel current stays under 50 mA, simplifying EMC compliance.

🧩

Sensor Interface Front-Ends

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ fits sensor-interface front-ends that multiplex analog inputs, condition signals in software, and forward data over a USART link. The 33 I/O pins easily accommodate 8-16 sensor channels plus an addressable I2C/SPI bus. With only 368 bytes of RAM the firmware must be lean, but the OTP code memory can hold substantial calibration tables. The 4 MHz instruction cycle is fast enough to service 1 kHz sample rates with margin, and the USART enables direct connection to a host controller or wireless modem.

🏭

Motor Control Front-Ends

Use the PIC16C67T-04E/PQ as the logic core for small motor-control front-ends where the MCU generates PWM and direction signals and an external gate driver handles the high-current switching. Three timer modules (Timer0/1/2) provide PWM, event timing, and a free-running tick; the USART carries telemetry to a master controller. Because the PIC16C67 lacks hardware PWM capture for closed-loop commutation, software commutated BLDC or stepper drives are typical. The 5 V supply rail makes logic-level interface to gate drivers straightforward.

📱

HMI Keypad and LED Controller

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ makes an effective HMI keypad-and-LED controller where it scans a 4x4 or 8x8 key matrix, debounces inputs in software, refreshes multiplexed 7-segment or LED indicator rows, and reports events over USART. Its 33 I/O pins comfortably handle an 8x8 matrix plus indicator rows without external mux. The OTP memory holds the key map and indicator patterns permanently, which is desirable in regulated industrial or appliance environments where firmware drift is unacceptable. The USART links the HMI to a host controller or display module.

🏠

Consumer Appliance Main Board

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ serves in legacy consumer appliances - washing machines, microwave ovens, dishwashers, and HVAC controllers - where its OTP program memory locks in firmware that cannot be corrupted in the field. The 33 I/O pins drive relays, triacs, sensors, and user-interface elements; the USART links to a sub-display or wireless module. The PIC16C67's 14 KB program memory holds complete appliance state machines with mode tables, error logs, and indicator patterns. E-grade temperature rating (-40 C to +125 C) suits under-hood or motor-compartment mounting.

🚗

Automotive Body Controller (Non-Safety)

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ finds ongoing use in automotive body-control modules - door locks, window lifters, mirror controllers, lighting multiplexers - where the OTP firmware is locked after qualification and cannot be reflashed. The E-grade temperature range (-40 C to +125 C) and 33 I/O pins support the multi-load switching typical of body modules. The USART provides a LIN or K-line interface to the vehicle network. Note that safety-critical applications require AEC-Q100-qualified parts; this PIC16C67 variant is not AEC-Q100 and must be confined to non-safety body functions.

Engineering reference data for PIC16C67T-04E/PQ — comparison, design guidance, and compliance information.

Selection Guide

Choose the PIC16C67T-04E/PQ when your design is a sustaining-production board or legacy industrial product that already uses the PIC16C6X architecture and you need an exact match for the existing footprint. The 4 MHz speed grade, -40 C to +125 C temperature range, and 14 KB OTP memory make it ideal for deterministic, locked-firmware control loops where field reprogramming is undesirable. For new designs, prefer the PIC16F877-04I/PQ which is pin-compatible, fully active, Flash-based (re-programmable in-circuit), and roughly half the unit cost. Choose the PIC16C66 family only if you need 20 MHz performance and accept the smaller 8 KB program memory. Choose the PIC16C65B family for cost-sensitive applications where 7 KB of OTP and 192 bytes of RAM are sufficient.

Design Notes

Decouple VDD with a 0.1 uF ceramic capacitor placed within 5 mm of the VDD pin and a bulk 10-47 uF tantalum or electrolytic capacitor on the same 5 V rail. The PIC16C67 has only one VDD pin on the MQFP-44; all VSS pins should be tied to a low-impedance ground plane to reduce digital switching noise coupling into the analog AVdd/AVss pair. Add a 10-100 ohm ferrite bead on VDD if the supply rail also powers relays or motors to keep MCU noise below 50 mVpp.

The PIC16C67T-04E/PQ uses One-Time Programmable (OTP) memory - once a fuse is blown, the part cannot be erased. Plan for at least 3-5% OTP programming yield loss and never rely on a single prototype. Use windowless parts only for production runs where firmware is locked; for development use the PIC16F877 or PIC18F452 with Flash. MCLR must be pulled high through a 10 kohm resistor; a floating MCLR causes spurious resets. ICSP pins RB6/RB7 must not be pulled low at power-up or programming will fail.

Route the 4 MHz oscillator traces (OSC1/OSC2) within 5 mm of the IC, keep them short, and guard them with a ground pour to minimize EMI. Avoid running digital signal traces parallel to the oscillator traces. Place the crystal or resonator as close to OSC1/OSC2 as possible and keep the load capacitors within 3 mm of the oscillator pins. For industrial designs with significant EMI, add a 4.7 kohm series resistor on MCLR and a 100 nF capacitor to ground to improve noise immunity on the reset line.

Estimated: At 5 V supply, 4 MHz clock, and full 33 I/O pins sourcing 20 mA each, total power dissipation is approximately 250 mW (5 V x 50 mA), giving a junction temperature rise of about 6 C above ambient on the MQFP-44 with theta_JA near 25 C/W. The "E" temperature grade supports -40 C to +125 C operation but does not relax thermal design - verify with worst-case ambient and I/O loading in your specific enclosure.
