PIC16F19175T-I/MV Overview

The Microchip PIC16F19175T-I/MV is a 32MHz 8-bit PIC RISC microcontroller featuring 14KB (8K x 14 words) of Flash program memory, 1KB of SRAM, and 256 bytes of EEPROM, housed in a 40-pin UQFN (5x5 mm) package with an exposed thermal pad. It belongs to the PIC® XLP™ 16F family and integrates Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs), Intelligent Analog, and an integrated LCD driver with charge pump, making it especially well suited for battery-powered display applications.

An 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) is a programmable logic device that executes instructions from internal Flash memory at a clock rate up to 32MHz. The PIC16F19175T-I/MV sits within the broader hierarchy of microcontrollers -> 8-bit MCUs -> PIC microcontrollers -> XLP (eXtreme Low Power) family -> power management MCUs. Its integrated charge pump and LCD drive enable glass bias generation without external DC-DC circuitry, while XLP technology delivers sub-µA sleep currents for battery longevity.

Key differentiating features include 35 high-current I/O pins, a 12-bit ADC² (Analog-to-Digital Converter with Computation), a 5-bit DAC, low-power comparators (LP COMP), PWM, CCP, CWG, SMT, ZCD, and PPS (Peripheral Pin Select). The integrated LCD driver supports up to 280 segments, and the eXtreme Low Power (XLP) architecture delivers typical sleep currents in the nanoamp range, enabling years of operation from a single coin cell. The 12-bit ADC² autonomously performs signal conditioning such as averaging and threshold comparisons without CPU intervention.

Architecturally, the device uses an enhanced mid-range 8-bit CPU core with a hardware multiplier, 14-bit instruction word, and 16-level hardware stack, allowing deterministic interrupt response and predictable real-time behavior. The integrated charge pump generates the VPP LCD bias voltage from a low-voltage source, eliminating an external boost circuit. Combined with PPS routing and Core Independent Peripherals, the chip dramatically reduces firmware complexity and BOM cost.

Typical applications include battery-powered LCD meters and thermostats, IoT sensor nodes with displays, portable medical devices (glucometers, pulse oximeters), consumer appliances with segment displays, and industrial HMIs. The PIC16F19175T-I/MV is the tape-and-reel variant; the PIC16F19175-I/MV is the tray variant. Designers should also consider the pin-compatible PIC16F19155 (less Flash/RAM) and PIC16F19176 (more Flash) for memory scaling within the same package.

For PCB layout, place a 0.1µF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin and bond the exposed pad (EP) to a continuous ground plane for thermal dissipation. Program/debug is supported via ICSP™ on RA0/RA1, and the PPS system allows most digital peripherals to be reassigned to multiple I/O pins for flexible board routing.

Design Notes

The PIC16F19175T-I/MV integrates a charge pump for the LCD driver that operates from the main 2.3V to 5.5V supply. To achieve the lowest sleep current, switch off the LCD charge pump, ADC, and unused peripherals via PMD bits before entering Sleep. A typical Sleep current with full RAM retention and WDT disabled is in the sub-µA range per the Microchip datasheet, enabling multi-year coin-cell operation when duty-cycled properly.

Place a 0.1µF decoupling capacitor as close as possible to each VDD pin (11, 27, 40) and bond the central exposed pad (EP) directly to a continuous ground plane with at least 8 thermal vias for heat dissipation. The UQFN EP also serves as the electrical ground reference for the bottom of the die; inadequate EP soldering can cause thermal runaway or erratic I/O behavior. Keep trace lengths to the ICSP™ pads (RA0/RA1) under 50mm for reliable in-circuit programming.

Do not exceed 5.5V on any VDD pin or 5.5V on any I/O pin relative to VSS - the absolute maximum rating is 6.5V. The ICSP™ pins (RA0/RA1) default to analog input mode at POR; configure them as digital I/O via ANSEL registers if used as GPIO. The internal oscillator defaults to 16MHz HFINTOSC at reset; verify that OSCCON and OSCTUNE settings match your required system clock before relying on timing-critical peripherals such as UART or PWM.

The PPS (Peripheral Pin Select) system allows most digital peripherals to be remapped to any compatible digital I/O pin. Use this flexibility to route high-speed signals (SPI SCK, PWM outputs) to pins physically close to their destination, shortening PCB traces and reducing EMI. However, the LCD segment pins are fixed-position and cannot be remapped - plan your LCD glass layout around the dedicated SEG pins shown in the datasheet pinout table.
