TPS82140SILR Overview
A step-down (buck) converter is a switch-mode power supply topology that efficiently steps a higher DC input voltage down to a lower DC output voltage by rapidly switching an inductor and rectifying the stored energy. The TPS82140 integrates the synchronous power stage, the shielded inductor, and the compensation network into one MicroSiP package, eliminating external magnetics design and shrinking PCB area by roughly 60% compared to discrete buck implementations. As part of the broader power-management IC hierarchy, it sits between discrete switching regulators and fully discrete buck converters.
Key specifications include 2A continuous output current, 0.9V to 6V adjustable output voltage, 3V to 17V input voltage range, 17V maximum input, 2 MHz typical switching frequency, 20 uA quiescent current, and 1% feedback voltage accuracy. The TPS82140 operates from -40C to +125C junction temperature and includes internal soft-start, thermal shutdown, and a power-good indicator. The integrated inductor shields against radiated EMI and removes the need for a separate inductor selection.
Typical applications include industrial 12V and 24V bus point-of-load rails, portable and battery-powered equipment, communication infrastructure modules, factory automation nodes, and space-constrained consumer devices. The wide 17V input rating makes it especially suitable for industrial sensors and 12V supply rails.
When designing with this device, follow the manufacturer recommended input and output capacitor values and keep the input capacitor loop area minimal. The MicroSiP package dissipates heat primarily through the PCB copper pads; ensure adequate copper area on top and inner layers for thermal relief.

Typical Applications
TPS82140SILR is suitable for 6 applications: Industrial 12V/24V Point-of-Load Rails, Portable and Battery-Powered Equipment, Communication Infrastructure Modules, Factory Automation Nodes, Space-Constrained Consumer Electronics, Test and Measurement Instrumentation.
Industrial 12V/24V Point-of-Load Rails
The TPS82140SILR's 17V maximum input rating comfortably handles 12V industrial buses with margin for transients, while its integrated inductor shields against EMI in factory environments. The 2A continuous output and 0.9-6V adjustable range cover most logic rails (1.0V, 1.2V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V) found on industrial sensor boards, PLC I/O modules, and HMI controllers. DCS-Control topology ensures fast transient response when motors or solenoids cause sudden load steps on the 12V rail. The MicroSiP 3.0 x 2.8 mm footprint fits inside small sensor housings where a discrete buck would not. Power Save Mode lowers quiescent current to 20 uA, suitable for always-on industrial nodes.
Recommended
Portable and Battery-Powered Equipment
The TPS82140SILR's 20 uA quiescent current and Power Save Mode extend battery life in handheld instruments, portable medical devices, and wireless sensor nodes. Its 3V minimum input supports direct connection to single-cell Li-ion batteries or 3.3V system rails. The 2 MHz switching frequency stays above the AM band, preventing interference with wireless radios. The MicroSiP package is only 1.5 mm tall, fitting inside slim handheld enclosures. With 2A output capability, the module can power a microcontroller, display, and wireless radio simultaneously without external magnetics design. The wide -40C to +125C operating range also supports outdoor field equipment.
Recommended
Communication Infrastructure Modules
The TPS82140SILR delivers clean 1.8V or 3.3V rails for FPGAs, ASICs, and SerDes devices in small-form-factor communication modules such as SFP, PoE, and industrial Ethernet cards. The integrated inductor shields against radiated EMI, which is critical in dense PCB layouts where a discrete buck's magnetic field could couple into adjacent traces. The 2A output current is sufficient for powering transceiver rails in 1G/2.5G Ethernet PHYs. Power Good output enables sequencing with downstream regulators. The compact MicroSiP footprint frees board area for magnetics and connectors in compact modules.
Recommended
Factory Automation Nodes
The TPS82140SILR's wide 3V to 17V input allows direct operation from 24V industrial backplanes while still producing 5V or 3.3V logic rails for sensor nodes, IO-Link masters, and fieldbus interfaces. DCS-Control topology handles load transients caused by relay coils and motor starters on the same 24V bus. The integrated MicroSiP inductor reduces BOM count by approximately 8 components versus a discrete buck, lowering assembly cost for high-volume automation hardware. The -40C to +125C junction rating covers harsh factory environments with elevated ambient temperatures.
Recommended
Space-Constrained Consumer Electronics
The TPS82140SILR's MicroSiP package is only 3.0 mm x 2.8 mm x 1.5 mm tall, enabling compact step-down conversion in smart-home hubs, wearables, audio accessories, and IoT gateways. The integrated inductor eliminates the need for a separate inductor component, freeing roughly 20-30 mm^2 of board area. The 2A output current handles MCU + wireless + audio loads, while Power Save Mode keeps standby current low for always-connected devices. The 17V input also supports USB-PD or 12V adapter inputs in compact consumer enclosures.
Recommended
Test and Measurement Instrumentation
The TPS82140SILR produces low-ripple, low-noise rails for precision analog front-ends, ADC references, and signal conditioning circuits in bench-top instruments. While a switching regulator adds some ripple compared to an LDO, the 2 MHz switching frequency and DCS-Control keep output ripple below 1% in most conditions. The 2A output supports combined analog + digital loads on a single board. Power Good output enables synchronised startup with sensitive analog blocks. The MicroSiP package suits the dense mixed-signal layouts typical of oscilloscope and DMM front-end boards.

Key Differentiators
- 2A output in 1.5 mm tall MicroSiP with integrated shielded inductor (vs TPS82130SILR)
- Lower output current with same BOM simplicity vs TPS82150 (vs TPS82150SILR)
- Wide 17V input handles industrial 24V bus transients after protection (vs TPS82130SILR / TPS82150SILR)
Design Notes
The TPS82140 MicroSiP package dissipates heat primarily through the PCB copper pads beneath and around the module. Provide at least 25 mm^2 of copper pour on the top layer connected to the VIN, GND, and SW pads, plus thermal vias to inner ground planes. Without adequate copper area, full 2A operation may require derating in high-ambient-temperature environments above 85C. The input capacitor loop area should be minimized by placing the input bypass capacitor as close to the VIN and GND pads as possible to reduce switching noise injection back into the input rail.
Do not exceed 17V on the VIN pin even transiently, as the device has no internal over-voltage protection. Ensure the upstream supply's transient response stays below 17V under all load-dump conditions. Also, do not leave the FB pin floating; the converter requires a feedback resistor divider tied to VOUT for proper regulation. The EN pin should be tied to VIN (through a resistor) for always-on operation, or driven by a logic signal for sequenced power-up.
Keep the feedback trace short and away from the SW node and the integrated inductor to avoid noise coupling. Place the feedback resistor divider close to the FB pin. Route the VOS sense trace directly to the output capacitor to minimize output voltage offset. The PG pin can be left floating if power-good monitoring is not required. For EMI-sensitive designs, add a small ferrite bead on the input if conducted emissions must meet strict CISPR standards.
