DP83867E Visão geral

The Texas Instruments DP83867E is a robust, low-power, fully-featured 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Physical Layer transceiver with integrated PMD sublayers, supporting 10BASE-Te, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T Ethernet protocols, housed in a 48-pin VQFN (7x7 mm) package. The device delivers extra-low latency (TX < 90 ns, RX < 290 ns) and is offered in an industrial extended-temperature grade with SGMII and RGMII MAC interfaces.

An Ethernet PHY (Physical Layer transceiver) is a mixed-signal IC that connects a MAC controller to the copper medium (twisted-pair cable), handling line encoding/decoding, link training, echo/next-crosstalk cancellation, and clock/data recovery across the MDI. The DP83867E sits at the bottom of the OSI physical layer, translating digital MAC frames into analog baseband signals on the cable. In the taxonomy: Ethernet PHY -> transceiver -> network interface IC -> communication semiconductor. The part exceeds 8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD on the cable pins, making it a robust choice for industrial and automotive-grade Ethernet links.

Key features include support for both RGMII and SGMII MAC interfaces, integrated 1.25 GHz SerDes for SGMII, low-power 1000BASE-T operation, programmable LED outputs, and a flexible MDIO/MDC management interface. The extended-temperature grade (-40C to +105C ambient with proper thermal design) targets industrial control, factory automation, and outdoor equipment where commercial-grade PHYs derate.

Architecturally, the DP83867E uses a DSP-based echo and crosstalk canceller, an integrated 1000BASE-T PMA/PMD with on-chip termination, and a low-jitter PLL to recover the 125 MHz reference. The SGMII variant routes the recovered data over a 1.25 Gbps differential serial link, eliminating the 12-bit parallel RGMII bus and reducing board-layer routing complexity in space-constrained SoMs.

Typical applications include industrial Ethernet switches, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), factory-floor IO modules, motor drives, telecom base-station routers, and automotive Ethernet PHYs for in-vehicle networking. The SGMII interface in particular suits SoCs that place the PHY on a remote daughter card or that prefer serial MAC connectivity.

Design consideration: the MDI traces require 100-ohm controlled differential impedance and an integrated magnetics RJ-45 with center-tap; the 1.0 V analog and 2.5/3.3 V digital rails must be cleanly decoupled to meet the IEEE 802.3 return-loss mask. Use the TI reference design checklist for BOM and stack-up.

Source: TI DP83867E datasheet, IEEE 802.3 100BASE-TX/1000BASE-T clauses.
What is the difference between DP83867E, DP83867IS, and DP83867CS?
DP83867E is the extended-temperature (-40C to +105C) grade with RGMII and SGMII MAC interfaces. The DP83867IS is the industrial RGMII-only grade, and DP83867CS is the commercial RGMII-only grade (0C to +70C). All three share the same 48-VQFN (RGZ) footprint and pinout, making them drop-in compatible. Source: TI E2E forum thread 'DP83867IR: Does the DP83867IR/CR match the form, fit, and function of the DP83867E/IS/CS'.
What is the difference between DP83867E and DP83869HM?
The DP83867E (RGMII/SGMII, extended temperature) and DP83869HM (RGMII/SGMII/SGMI, industrial temp) belong to the same TI PHY family with similar protocols. However, per the TI E2E forum thread 'Replacing DP83867E with DP83869HMRGZT', MDIO and a few other pins are routed differently between the two, so the DP83869HM is NOT a true drop-in for DP83867E without a board respin. Source: TI DP83867E datasheet and DP83869E datasheet.
Is DP83867E still in production and what is the lifecycle status?

The DP83867E uses a 48-pin VQFN (RGZ) 7x7 mm package. Pin 1 is at the top-left marker dot; pins increment counter-clockwise. The MAC interface pins (TXD[3:0], TX_EN, TX_CLK, RXD[3:0], RX_DV, RX_CLK for RGMII; SGMII differential pair for SGMII mode), MDIO/MDC, JTAG, reset, LED, and analog supply rails are arranged around the package perimeter with the exposed pad as the central ground/thermal pad. Source: TI DP83867E datasheet, package section.
What is the difference between RGMII and SGMII interface modes on DP83867E?
RGMII is a 12-bit parallel DDR interface running at 125 MHz (1000 Mbps), while SGMII is a 1.25 Gbps differential serial interface using two differential pairs. SGMII reduces pin count, simplifies PCB routing across board layers, and is preferred when the MAC is on a separate die or module. The DP83867E supports both modes; mode selection is via strapping pins or registers. Source: TI DP83867E datasheet, interface selection section.
What is the best cross-brand pin-compatible alternative to DP83867E?
There is no widely-published pin-compatible cross-brand drop-in for DP83867E in the 48-VQFN (RGZ) package from a different manufacturer. Common cross-brand Ethernet PHYs (Microchip KSZ9031, Broadcom BCM5241, Marvell 88E1512) come in different footprints and require board respin. The closest pin-compatible same-brand alternatives are TI's DP83867IS and DP83867CS, which are temperature-grade variants in the same RGZ package. Source: TI E2E forum, parametric search on digikey.com.
Can I drop in DP83867IS or DP83867CS in place of DP83867E?
Yes. The DP83867IS (industrial RGMII/SGMII, -40C to +85C) and DP83867CS (commercial RGMII only, 0C to +70C) share the same 48-VQFN (RGZ) footprint and pinout as the DP83867E. Functionally, all three parts use the same DSP echo canceller and PMD. Differences are limited to temperature grade, SGMII support (CS lacks SGMII), and minor datasheet specs. Source: TI E2E forum thread on DP83867 family.
How much power does DP83867E consume at gigabit speed?
The DP83867E typically consumes roughly 0.7-1.0 W at 1000BASE-T full-duplex traffic, depending on link length and traffic pattern. It supports energy-efficient Ethernet (EEE, IEEE 802.3az) to drop into low-power idle states between packets. A 1.0 V analog rail and a 2.5/3.3 V digital rail must be cleanly decoupled to avoid degrading the 1000BASE-T SNR. Source: TI DP83867E datasheet, electrical characteristics.
Does DP83867E require an external magnetics transformer?
Yes, the DP83867E requires an external 1:1 isolation transformer / common-mode choke with center-tap on each MDI pair for IEEE 802.3 compliance, EMI suppression, and DC isolation. Integrated-magnetics RJ-45 jacks (such as Pulse H1102, Belfuse 0826-1G1T-23) are typically used in production. Center-tap voltages follow the bias from the PHY internal termination. Source: TI DP83867E datasheet, MDI section.

Guia de seleção

Choose DP83867E for industrial and extended-temperature gigabit Ethernet designs that also need SGMII for compact routing or remote-MAC connectivity. The DP83867IS is the lower-cost alternative when SGMII is not needed and industrial temperature is sufficient. The DP83867CS is right for commercial-temperature, RGMII-only designs in benign environments. The DP83867IRGZT/CRGZT are the matching industrial/commercial RGMII-only options that share the same footprint. For multi-port or 100-MAC+ designs, consider TI's newer DP83869 family with multi-PHY integration - but expect a footprint change and a board respin.

Notas de projeto

MDI traces between the DP83867E and the magnetics must be routed as 100-ohm differential pairs with matched length (within 50 mils) and ground shielding on both sides. Place the magnetics within 25 mm of the PHY and place the 0.1 uF / 0.001 uF MDI common-mode capacitors as close to the RJ-45 as possible. Reference the TI DP83867E datasheet layout checklist for via stitching and ground islands.

The DP83867E requires three rails: a clean 1.0 V analog rail (VDDA1P0), a 2.5 V or 3.3 V I/O rail (VDDIO), and a digital core rail. Use a ferrite bead or Pi filter to isolate the analog 1.0 V from a noisy digital 1.0 V source. Estimated: at gigabit full-duplex with 100 m cable, total IC power is roughly 0.8-1.0 W; budget at least 1.5 A capacity on the 1.0 V rail.

RGMII traces should be 50-ohm single-ended and length-matched to within 50 mils across the TX and RX groups. The TX_CLK and RX_CLK traces must be matched within 20 mils of their data group. For SGMII, the 1.25 Gbps differential pair should be 100-ohm differential with via count minimized; AC-coupling capacitors may be required between SoC and PHY.

Do not hot-plug a live Ethernet cable into an unpowered DP83867E without protection - the 8 kV ESD rating applies after PCB-mounted protection circuits are in place. Always strap the correct interface mode (RGMII vs SGMII) via GPIO strap pins at board reset before MDIO software configuration. Failing to strap correctly can lock the part in a non-responsive state.
