EP1K30TC1443N Présentation
An FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) is a reconfigurable integrated circuit containing an array of configurable logic blocks (CLBs), programmable interconnect, and I/O cells that the designer can wire into arbitrary digital circuits after manufacture. FPGAs sit at the same conceptual level as application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and CPLDs in the programmable logic hierarchy: CPLD -> FPGA -> programmable SoC. Within the broader semiconductor taxonomy, FPGAs are a sub-category of digital logic ICs, distinct from ASICs (which are mask-programmed and not field-reprogrammable) and from microcontrollers/MPUs (which run software on a fixed hardware core).
Key features of the EP1K30TC1443N include 1,728 logic elements (LEs), 24 Kbits of embedded SRAM organized as true dual-port RAM blocks, 102 maximum user I/O pins, and JTAG-based IEEE 1149.1 boundary-scan / in-system programmability via the Altera (now Intel) Quartus design suite. The device supports hot-socketing insertion and LVCMOS/LVTTL I/O standards, simplifying mixed-voltage PCB integration with 3.3 V and 5 V peripherals.
Architecturally, the ACEX 1K family embeds an array of Logic Array Blocks (LABs), each containing ten LEs with a carry-chain and cascade-chain for fast arithmetic and wide fan-in logic. Distributed SRAM and embedded array blocks (EABs) provide on-chip memory for FIFOs, lookup tables, and small register files without consuming LE resources. The 2.5 V core with separate VCCIO banks allows the die to interface to 2.5 V, 3.3 V, and 5 V system logic without external level shifters, an important advantage over older 5 V-only ACEX predecessors.
Typical applications include industrial control glue logic, JTAG-based protocol bridges (I2C/SPI/UART to parallel), low-volume ASIC replacement in test and measurement equipment, custom state-machine controllers in motor drives, and educational FPGA platforms where the TQFP-144 footprint is preferred for hand-soldering or low-cost breakout boards. The ACEX 1K family was the industry's first FPGA to use embedded SRAM blocks alongside LE-based logic.
When designing with the EP1K30TC1443N, ensure that the Quartus version supports the ACEX 1K device family (Quartus II 13.0 or earlier; newer Quartus releases have dropped ACEX 1K support - see _validation_note). Pin assignment files should be regenerated in the original Quartus II toolchain to avoid compile errors. The TQFP-144 footprint is hand-solderable with standard reflow profiles, but exposed-pad variants of later Cyclone families are not drop-in compatible.

Applications typiques
EP1K30TC1443N convient pour 6 applications: Industrial Control Glue Logic, JTAG Protocol Bridge / Bus Interface, Low-Volume ASIC Replacement, Custom State-Machine Motor Controller, Educational FPGA Platform, Legacy Board Second-Source Production.
Industrial Control Glue Logic
The EP1K30TC1443N's 1,728 logic elements and 102 user I/O pins fit industrial PLC backplane glue logic where multiple discrete 74-series logic ICs would otherwise be needed. With 2.5 V core and 3.3 V/5 V-tolerant I/O banks, it bridges 24 V industrial sensor signals to a 3.3 V microcontroller bus via LVCMOS interfaces - the TQFP-144 footprint supports reflow soldering on standard FR-4 boards. Designers typically target 50-80 MHz operation for glue-logic glue, well within the -3 speed-grade envelope.
Recommandé
JTAG Protocol Bridge / Bus Interface
The EP1K30TC1443N's dedicated JTAG TAP (TCK/TMS/TDO/TDI) and 102 user I/O make it well suited as a glue-free bridge between legacy parallel buses (8/16/32-bit) and modern serial protocols like SPI, I2C, or UART. The 24 Kbit embedded SRAM (EAB) provides FIFO buffers for protocol conversion at sustained rates up to ~80 MHz in -3 speed grade. Hot-socketing support lets the bridge be added to a powered backplane without disturbing downstream logic.
Recommandé
Low-Volume ASIC Replacement
For test & measurement equipment produced in volumes under 5,000 units, the EP1K30TC1443N replaces a custom ASIC by giving designers full Quartus II 13.0 programmability in a hand-solderable TQFP-144. Embedded SRAM blocks (EABs) implement up to 24 Kbit of waveform memory or coefficient tables without consuming LE resources. The 2.5 V core and per-bank VCCIO let a single FPGA replace a board of 74LS, 74HC, and 74LVC logic families.
Recommandé
Custom State-Machine Motor Controller
ACEX 1K FPGAs are widely used in stepper and BLDC motor control as fast deterministic state machines running 6-step or FOC commutation loops. The EP1K30TC1443N's 102 user I/O accept quadrature encoder feedback, Hall sensors, and PWM outputs to three half-bridges; LAB carry-chains deliver sub-100 ns PWM edge resolution in -3 speed grade. The TQFP-144 industrial footprint survives under-hood thermal environments with adequate PCB copper pour.
Recommandé
Educational FPGA Platform
Universities and makers still use the EP1K30TC1443N on legacy Altera education boards because the TQFP-144 is hand-solderable on breakout PCBs and supports the textbook-standard Quartus II 13.0 toolchain. The 1,728 LEs accommodate a full RISC-V soft core, UART, and GPIO lab exercises within a single device. Industrial-commercial 0-70C temperature grade matches classroom lab conditions.
Recommandé
Legacy Board Second-Source Production
OEMs whose end-products were designed around the EP1K30TC1443N 10-20 years ago use this part (or its -1/-2 speed-grade siblings) to maintain production without re-spinning the PCB. The TQFP-144 footprint has been stable across the speed-grade variants, so qualified BOMs can substitute EP1K30TC144-3N for EP1K30TC144-2N with no layout change. This is the dominant use case for the remaining channel inventory in 2026.

Notes de conception
Do not assume modern Quartus Prime supports ACEX 1K - it does not. Use Quartus II 13.0 or earlier for synthesis, place-and-route, and bitstream generation. Newer toolchains (Quartus Prime 18.x and beyond) silently drop ACEX 1K from the device list, producing 'unsupported device family' errors at compile time. Migrating to Cyclone IV or Cyclone 10 LP requires a full Quartus Prime port with possible RTL changes.
VCCINT (2.5 V core) and VCCIO (per-bank I/O) must be decoupled with 0.1 uF ceramic capacitors placed as close as possible to each supply pin - one cap per VCC pin and one bulk 10-47 uF tantalum or polymer cap per supply rail. The ACEX 1K family has high inrush during configuration; ensure the 2.5 V regulator can source at least 1.5x steady-state ICCINT to avoid VCCINT droop that aborts configuration.
TQFP-144 footprints require 0.5 mm pitch traces escaping from all four sides - use inner PCB layers for power and ground pours to free up outer-layer routing. For hot-socketing applications, add a soft-start circuit on VCCINT to limit inrush to less than 200 mA/us; the ACEX 1K datasheet specifies the maximum VCCINT slew rate that prevents latch-up during live insertion. JTAG chain integrity is critical for production programming - keep TDI/TDO traces short and add 10K pull-ups on nCONFIG and nSTATUS.
ACEX 1K LVTTL outputs drive up to 24 mA per pin, but the -3 speed grade has slower edge rates (typically 2-4 ns) than -1 grade. For clock signals above 100 MHz, route clocks on inner stripline layers with 50 ohm characteristic impedance and use dedicated CLK0/CLK1/CLK2 pins rather than regular I/O to enter the global clock network - this avoids skew across the LAB array.
