5CSEBA5U23C8N 概要

The Altera (Intel PSG) 5CSEBA5U23C8N is a Cyclone® V SE System-on-Chip (SoC) FPGA that integrates a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore hard processor system with 85K programmable logic elements, fabricated on TSMC's 28 nm low-power process and packaged in a 672-pin UBG (UFBGA) 23x23 mm device. The integrated HPS runs at up to 600 MHz and the FPGA fabric operates with industry-leading low power while providing up to 145 user I/O pins and 3.125 Gbps transceiver capability through the SE device variant.

What is an SoC FPGA? A System-on-Chip FPGA is a hybrid device that combines a general-purpose processor subsystem (the HPS, in this case a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 with CoreSight debug) with a programmable logic fabric on a single silicon die, sharing the same package. SoC FPGAs sit at the intersection of Application Processors, ASSPs, and traditional FPGAs in the broader semiconductor hierarchy - they let designers allocate latency-critical or parallel DSP/control logic to hardware in the FPGA while running sequential operating systems (Linux, VxWorks, RTOS) on the Cortex-A9 cores, eliminating the need for a separate processor companion chip and reducing board area, BOM count, and latency between the processor and the fabric.

Key features of the 5CSEBA5U23C8N include 85K logic elements (LEs), approximately 3.97 Mbits of embedded memory, 87 variable-precision DSP blocks, and the SE (small-end) variant's integrated 3.125 Gbps transceivers. The device supports Nios II soft-core offload, 32-bit DDR3/DDR3L/LPDDR2 external memory interfaces from both the HPS and FPGA fabric, and standard ARM TrustZone security extensions. Operating junction temperature is 0 °C to +85 °C for the commercial 'C' grade and core VCC is 1.1 V with separate HPS and FPGA power rails.

The Cyclone V SE architecture pairs a power-optimized 28 nm FPGA fabric with a hardened ARM Cortex-A9 subsystem, achieving substantially lower power per logic operation than the prior-generation Cyclone IV. The HPS includes dual Cortex-A9 MPCore CPUs, NEON media-processing engine, single- and double-precision hardware FPU, 32 KB L1 instruction/data caches per core, 512 KB shared L2 cache, and a multilayer ARM CoreSight interconnect with SDRAM controller, QSPI flash controller, NAND flash controller, Ethernet MAC, USB 2.0 OTG, SD/SDIO/MMC, SPI, UART, I²C, and GPIO peripherals - all accessible from user logic through AXI bridges.

Typical applications include industrial machine vision and motor control, broadcast and professional video processing, factory automation PLCs, automotive driver-assistance and infotainment prototypes, military/aerospace ruggedized embedded computing, and medical imaging. Designers choose the 5CSEBA5U23C8N specifically when a Linux-capable processor must share low-latency, high-bandwidth data paths with custom parallel pipelines - for example, processing 1080p60 video streams, running EtherCAT master stacks, or implementing deterministic DDR3 access from the FPGA fabric.

When designing with this device, plan the PCB layout around the 672-pin BGA 23x23 mm footprint early; the transceiver lanes and DDR3 byte-group routing must be length-matched within the budget specified in the Cyclone V device family handbook. Use the Altera SoC EDS toolchain with the ARM Development Studio 5 (DS-5) debugger and Quartus Prime Standard Edition for FPGA design entry. For thermal management, the commercial 'C8' speed grade device has moderate static power; still, a minimum 4-layer PCB with an inner ground plane is recommended for the 1.1 V core rail decoupling strategy.

This page synthesizes distributor inventory, same-package Cyclone V SE family drop-in alternatives, and practical PCB/toolchain design notes that go beyond what the manufacturer datasheet summary alone provides.

主な用途

5CSEBA5U23C8N の用途: 7 件s: Industrial Machine Vision and Inspection, Industrial Motor Control and PLC, Broadcast Video Processing and Pro-AV, Automotive Infotainment and ADAS Prototyping, Military and Aerospace Ruggedized Embedded Computing, Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Equipment, IoT Edge Gateways and Protocol Conversion.

🏭

Industrial Machine Vision and Inspection

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N fits machine-vision pipelines because its 85K logic elements can absorb multiple parallel image-processing cores (filtering, blob detection, FFT) while the dual ARM Cortex-A9 HPS at 600 MHz runs the OpenCV host stack, GigE Vision acquisition, and decision logic. The 87 DSP blocks accelerate convolutional filtering at line rates beyond what a software-only ARM pipeline achieves. Designers place the FPGA fabric on the camera-side pre-processing path (debayer, color correction, thresholding) and the HPS on the classification/networking side, sharing data via the on-chip AXI bus without external memory round-trips. This topology reduces end-to-end latency by 40-60% compared to a discrete CPU+FPGA design.

🏭

Industrial Motor Control and PLC

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N serves multi-axis motor drives and PLCs where its HPS runs the EtherCAT master, CiA 402 servo state machine, and IEC 61131-3 runtime while the FPGA fabric implements deterministic current-control loops, PWM generation, and encoder capture with sub-microsecond jitter. The integrated HPS eliminates an external ARM host, cutting BOM by $15-25 per axis and shrinking PCB area. The 3.125 Gbps transceivers support EtherCAT, Profinet, and SERCOS III industrial Ethernet without external PHYs. Designers typically pair the device with the Altera SoC EDS toolchain and use the lightweight HPS-to-FPGA AXI bridge for control-variable exchange.

📺

Broadcast Video Processing and Pro-AV

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N handles 1080p60 and 4K broadcast video workflows because its FPGA fabric can implement parallel color-space conversion, scaling, de-interlacing, and overlay composition at line rate, while the ARM Cortex-A9 HPS runs the control plane (network management, JSON-RPC API, web UI). The 3.97 Mbits of embedded memory buffers several scanlines of 1080p60 data without external SRAM. The 3.125 Gbps transceivers accept SDI, HDMI, and DisplayPort inputs through serializer-deserializer PHYs, eliminating separate input bridges. Compared to CPU-only broadcast encoders, this SoC FPGA achieves 3-5x lower latency on real-time HEVC/H.264 preview pipelines.

🚗

Automotive Infotainment and ADAS Prototyping

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is used in pre-production automotive infotainment and ADAS prototypes where its HPS runs Linux/Android automotive stacks (GENIVI, AOSP) and the FPGA fabric accelerates surround-view camera stitching, lane-detection, and driver-monitoring pipelines. While the device itself is not AEC-Q100 qualified, its 28 nm low-power process, integrated Cortex-A9 with NEON media engine, and the U23 package footprint make it ideal for proof-of-concept builds before migrating to AEC-Q100-qualified Cyclone V SoC variants. The DDR3 controller supports the bandwidth required by 4-channel camera aggregation at 30 fps.

✈️

Military and Aerospace Ruggedized Embedded Computing

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is selected for ruggedized military and aerospace embedded computing because the Cyclone V SE SoC family is offered in industrial and military temperature grades (5CSEBA5U23I7N) with the same U23 package, simplifying conduction-cooled and conformal-coated designs. The HPS runs secure boot via the ARM TrustZone extension while the FPGA fabric implements MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, and SpaceWire interfaces without external protocol chips. The 3.125 Gbps transceivers support high-speed serial backplane links. The integrated HPS eliminates the need for a separate secure processor, reducing the attack surface and PCB area in size-, weight-, and power-constrained (SWaP) platforms.

💊

Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Equipment

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N powers medical imaging front-ends (ultrasound beamformers, endoscopy processors, patient-monitoring hubs) where its FPGA fabric implements real-time signal processing (FFT-based Doppler, speckle reduction, image enhancement) at deterministic latency while the ARM Cortex-A9 HPS runs the DICOM stack, touch-screen UI, and network interfaces. The on-chip ARM TrustZone enables secure storage of patient data, and the integrated DDR3 controller eliminates an external memory bridge. Compared to a discrete CPU+FPGA architecture, the SoC integration reduces BOM by $20-40 and shrinks PCB area by 30%, which is critical for handheld and cart-based medical devices.

🧩

IoT Edge Gateways and Protocol Conversion

The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is used in industrial IoT edge gateways where its dual ARM Cortex-A9 HPS runs containerized workloads (Docker, OpenWRT) at the edge while the FPGA fabric implements deterministic protocol bridging between legacy fieldbuses (Modbus RTU, Profibus, CAN) and modern MQTT/OPC-UA publish-subscribe layers. The 145 user I/Os accommodate multiple isolated RS-485, CAN, and digital I/O channels directly. The 3.125 Gbps transceivers support redundant Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. By consolidating protocol processing, encryption (AES via FPGA fabric), and Linux networking on one chip, the device replaces a $40-60 multi-chip SBC+microcontroller architecture.

According to the Cyclone V device datasheet, it is housed in a 672-pin UBG/UFBGA package measuring 23 x 23 mm and is fabricated on a 28 nm low-power process.
How many logic elements does the 5CSEBA5U23C8N have?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N contains 85,000 logic elements in the FPGA fabric, along with 87 variable-precision DSP blocks and approximately 3.97 Mbits of embedded memory. This is the medium-density member of the Cyclone V SE SoC family, positioned between the 5CSEBA4 and 5CSEBA6 device variants in the product hierarchy.
What is the maximum HPS clock frequency of the 5CSEBA5U23C8N?
The hard processor system on the 5CSEBA5U23C8N runs at up to 600 MHz across the dual ARM Cortex-A9 cores. The 'C8' speed grade does not impose a frequency reduction versus 'C7'; speed grade primarily controls FPGA fabric timing closure rather than the hard Cortex-A9 subsystem.
Where can I download the 5CSEBA5U23C8N datasheet PDF?
The Cyclone V device family datasheet that covers the 5CSEBA5U23C8N is available on the official Altera/Intel PSG product page at https://www.altera.com/products/fpga/cyclone/v/se/5csea5-u23/5CSEBA5U23C8N, and the generic Cyclone V device datasheet PDF is hosted at intel.com/content/www/us/en/programmable/support/support-resources/operation-and-support/cyclone-v.html. The same family handbook also covers pinout, thermal characteristics, and DDR3 interface specifications.
What package does the 5CSEBA5U23C8N use and how many pins?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N uses a 672-pin UBG (also written UFBGA) package with a 23 x 23 mm body. The UBG designation indicates an Ultra-Fine-pitch BGA and is the same package outline shared by other 5CSEBA5/5CSEBA4/5CSEBA2 family variants in the U23 device variant group, enabling PCB layout reuse across density grades.
What is the difference between 5CSEBA5U23C8N and 5CSEBA5U23C7SN?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is the commercial-temperature speed-grade 8 device, while the 5CSEBA5U23C7SN is the speed-grade 7N variant. Both share the same 672-pin U23 package and 85K logic-element die; the speed-grade difference changes FPGA fabric timing closure margin but the HPS, transceivers, and pinout remain identical, making them drop-in compatible.
Can the 5CSEBA5U23I7N replace the 5CSEBA5U23C8N directly?
The 5CSEBA5U23I7N uses the industrial temperature grade (-40 °C to +100 °C) instead of commercial (0 °C to +85 °C) and is a drop-in upgrade for the 5CSEBA5U23C8N on the same 672-pin U23 footprint. Both devices share the same FPGA die and pinout, so the 5CSEBA5U23I7N can substitute directly when extended temperature operation is required without any PCB rework.
What is the best cross-brand drop-in replacement for the 5CSEBA5U23C8N?
There is no true cross-brand drop-in replacement for the 5CSEBA5U23C8N because it integrates an ARM Cortex-A9 hard processor system with proprietary Altera/Intel FPGA fabric and transceivers on a single die. Competing SoC FPGAs such as Xilinx Zynq-7000 require different packages, different power rails, and different toolchains, so they cannot be soldered onto the same BGA footprint. Same-brand Cyclone V SE family variants are the only true drop-in options.
How much does the 5CSEBA5U23C8N cost and is it in stock?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is currently listed at approximately $125.30 for single-piece quantity as of 2026-09-06, with distributor stock reported at several thousand pieces across DigiKey, Mouser, and authorized resellers. As of 2026-09-06, distributor stock levels of several thousand pieces across multiple vendors suggest the part is currently not allocation-constrained, unlike 2022-2023 supply episodes.
5CSEBA5U23C8N vs 5CSEBA2U23A7N - which is better for motor control?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N offers 85K logic elements versus 25K for the 5CSEBA2U23A7N, plus an A7 vs C8 speed grade difference and a higher DSP block count (87 versus 36), making the 5CSEBA5U23C8N the stronger choice for multi-axis motor control with EtherCAT master stacks. The 5CSEBA2U23A7N is preferred only when BOM cost dominates and the algorithm fits in 25K logic elements. Both share the same 672-pin U23 UBG package and HPS, so either can be soldered onto the same PCB.
When should I choose the 5CSEBA5U23C8N over a non-SoC Cyclone V FPGA?
Choose the 5CSEBA5U23C8N over a non-SoC Cyclone V FPGA such as the 5CEBA4F23C8N when the design requires running a high-level operating system (Linux, VxWorks) with low-latency, high-bandwidth access to the FPGA fabric. The integrated dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 HPS eliminates the need for a separate processor companion chip, reducing BOM, board area, and inter-chip latency. For designs that only need soft-core control, the smaller and cheaper Nios II-based Cyclone V non-SoC parts are usually sufficient.
Is the 5CSEBA5U23C8N RoHS compliant?
Yes, the 5CSEBA5U23C8N is RoHS compliant per the Altera/Intel PSG product page and conforms to lead-free (Pb-free) reflow profiles up to 260 °C peak as specified in the Cyclone V device handbook. The device is also REACH-compliant; however, it is not AEC-Q100 qualified and is therefore intended for industrial, broadcast, medical, and consumer applications rather than under-the-hood automotive deployments.
What tools are needed to design with the 5CSEBA5U23C8N?
The 5CSEBA5U23C8N is supported by Intel Quartus Prime Standard Edition (or the older Altera Quartus II subscription edition) for FPGA synthesis, place-and-route, and timing analysis, plus the Altera SoC Embedded Design Suite (SoC EDS) for HPS software development, which integrates ARM Development Studio 5 (DS-5) for Cortex-A9 debugging. The Cyclone V device handbook and the SoC EDS user guide are the primary reference documents for toolchain configuration and bring-up.

選定ガイド

Choose the 5CSEBA5U23C8N when your design requires a Linux-capable dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 host tightly integrated with an 85K-logic-element FPGA fabric in the 672-pin U23 UBG package, with industrial-grade transceiver support up to 3.125 Gbps. It is the right part for mid-density SoC designs in machine vision, motor control, broadcast video, military/aerospace prototypes, and medical imaging. If the design runs only deterministic soft-core logic without an OS, step down to the cheaper non-SoC 5CEBA4F23C8N. If 85K logic elements exceeds your needs by more than 50%, the pin-compatible 5CSEBA4U23C8N (~40K LE) or 5CSEBA2U23C8N (~25K LE) save BOM cost while sharing the same PCB layout. For harsh-temperature operation, choose the industrial-grade 5CSEBA5U23I7N instead.

設計ノート

Estimated: The 672-pin UBG (UFBGA) package has a 1.0 mm ball pitch with 23 x 23 mm body. PCB design requires high-density interconnect (HDI) with microvia stack-ups - a minimum 6-layer board with via-in-pad is recommended for the BGA breakout. Use 50 ohm controlled impedance for the 3.125 Gbps transceiver lanes and length-match within 150 mils across each transceiver group per the Cyclone V device handbook. Decouple each power rail with 0.1 µF + 10 µF ceramic capacitors placed within 100 mils of the package balls.

The Cyclone V SE SoC FPGA in the U23 package has a typical junction-to-ambient thermal resistance (θJA) of approximately 8-12 C/W with a properly designed 6-layer PCB and thermal via array under the exposed pads. At maximum HPS + FPGA utilization with both cores active and transceivers running at 3.125 Gbps, total power can reach 6-8 W; a thermal pad or heat-spreader is recommended for closed enclosures above 60 °C ambient. The 'C8' commercial speed grade is rated to 85 °C junction temperature, while 'I7' industrial is rated to 100 °C.

Do not assume the UBG and UBG-LF package variants are footprint-compatible - LF variants have different ball finishes and slight pad-stack differences that can cause solder-joint reliability issues. Also, do not mix the U23 (672-pin) package with the U19 (484-pin) variant on the same PCB layout - although both are Cyclone V SE SoC devices, the U19 has fewer I/O and missing transceiver channels. Always cross-reference the Altera/Intel PSG ordering part number decoder in the Cyclone V device handbook before committing the PCB layout.

The DDR3 memory interface from the HPS and FPGA fabric requires 2T timing on the address/control bus and fly-by topology for the clock. Use the Altera External Memory Interface Toolkit (EMIF Toolkit) to validate write/read margin across voltage and temperature corners. The 3.125 Gbps transceiver reference clock must have a jitter below 350 fs RMS (12 kHz-20 MHz) per the Cyclone V device handbook; a jitter-cleaner PLL is recommended if the upstream oscillator is shared with Ethernet PHYs.
