WGI210AT Overview

The Intel WGI210AT (also marketed as the Intel Ethernet Controller I210-AT) is a single-chip, PCIe-based Gigabit Ethernet controller that supports 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T operation, packaged in a 9 mm x 9 mm 64-pin QFN with an exposed thermal pad. It integrates a PCIe v2.1 (2.5 GT/s) host interface, a GMII/RGMII/MII MAC, and on-chip PHY, delivering full IEEE 802.3 compliance for enterprise, industrial, and embedded networking designs. The device uses a 0.9 V internal core supply with a 3.3 V I/O supply, enabling low power consumption typical of 1 W class GbE controllers.

A Gigabit Ethernet controller is a purpose-built networking IC that links a host processor (typically via PCIe) to a copper or fiber physical network, handling MAC/PHY framing, link training, and TCP/UDP/IP checksum offload. Within Intel's Ethernet controller taxonomy, the I210 sits in the lower-power mainstream tier below the I350/I210 server parts, optimized for single-port embedded and small-form-factor designs. PCIe is the standard host interconnect for these controllers, replacing the older PCI-X interfaces that preceded the GbE era.

Key features include TimeSync offload (IEEE 1588/802.1AS) for industrial automation, energy-efficient Ethernet (EEE) per IEEE 802.3az, jumbo frame support up to 9.5 KB, and the proven Intel PROSet driver stack. The exposed pad of the QFN-64 package provides a low-thermal-resistance path to the host PCB, a critical feature since GbE PHYs can dissipate 600 mW to 1.2 W during continuous full-duplex operation. On-die MACsec and VLAN stripping/insertion further reduce host CPU overhead.

Architecturally, the I210 uses a PCI Express 2.1 endpoint controller with one x1 lane, hardware IEEE 802.1Qav time-sensitive-networking shaping, and an integrated 1000BASE-T PHY capable of auto-negotiation across all three link rates. The MAC supports 9.6 KB jumbo frames, IPv4/IPv6 checksum offload, TCP segmentation offload (TSO v2), and iSCSI boot for SAN-attached storage platforms. This combination of MAC, PHY, and PCIe in a single 64-pin QFN distinguishes the I210 from external-PHY controllers.

Typical applications include industrial PCs, factory automation controllers, point-of-sale terminals, network printers, embedded routers, and small business servers. For automotive and industrial-grade designs with extended temperature requirements, Intel offers the pin-compatible WGI210IT variant rated for -40 C to +85 C operation rather than the 0 C to +70 C commercial range of the WGI210AT.

When designing with this controller, allocate at least four PCB layers with a continuous ground plane beneath the QFN-64 exposed pad to keep junction temperature below 110 C; provide 4 kV ESD protection on the MDI lines; and verify driver compatibility with your OS kernel (Windows, Linux, VxWorks, or RTOS). The PCIe reference clock must be a 100 MHz HCSL source with the impedance and jitter specified in the Intel I210 datasheet.

Typical Applications

WGI210AT is suitable for 7 applications: Industrial PC and Factory Automation Gateway, Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminals and Retail Networking, Network Printers and Multifunction Devices, Small Business Routers and Network Attached Storage (NAS), Embedded Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Equipment, Industrial IoT Gateways and Edge Compute Appliances, Building Automation and Energy Management Controllers.

🏭

Industrial PC and Factory Automation Gateway

The WGI210AT's integrated 1000BASE-T PHY and PCI Express 2.1 x1 host bus deliver single-cable Gigabit uplink for industrial PCs, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and SCADA gateways. IEEE 1588 TimeSync hardware time-stamping at the MAC gives sub-microsecond accuracy required for synchronized motion-control rings, while energy-efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) drops link power below 50 mW during idle periods. The 0 C to +70 C commercial temperature window covers most factory-floor enclosures; for harsher cabinets select the pin-compatible WGI210IT. Junction-to-ambient thermal resistance of about 28 C/W means a 4-layer ground plane beneath the QFN-64 EP keeps Tj below 100 C during continuous GbE traffic.

💳

Point-of-Sale (POS) Terminals and Retail Networking

POS terminals and self-checkout kiosks benefit from the WGI210AT's single-port MACsec engine and preboot iSCSI remote-boot support, which lets a back-office server stream an OS image to each lane-side register. The 3.3 V/0.9 V dual supply simplifies integration with the small mixed-voltage rails typical of ARM-based POS boards, and the 9 x 9 mm QFN-64 footprint fits easily beneath the small-form-factor displays used in modern checkout hardware. Combined with the Intel PROSet driver stack and DTLE/WOL wake support, retailers can centrally manage registers and wake them for end-of-day reconciliation. The integrated PHY eliminates the EMI footprint of a separate 1000BASE-T transceiver.

🖨️

Network Printers and Multifunction Devices

Office printers, multifunction devices, and label applicators use the WGI210AT as a single-chip Gigabit uplink to the office LAN, leveraging its 9.6 KB jumbo-frame support to push large PDF or PCL payloads at full line rate without tasking the printer's image processor. The on-chip PHY avoids a separate Ethernet magnetics section, and the WOL/preboot support lets the MFP wake from sleep on incoming print jobs, dropping standby draw toward zero. Deep-sleep EEE operation also meets ENERGY STAR imaging-equipment criteria. The single 3.3 V rail plus internal SVR simplifies the printer's multi-rail power design.

🌐

Small Business Routers and Network Attached Storage (NAS)

Small-business routers, branch-office firewalls, and 2- to 4-bay NAS enclosures use the WGI210AT as a WAN or LAN-side Gigabit port where board space, EMI, and BOM cost all matter. Hardware TCP segmentation offload v2 plus IPv4/IPv6 checksum offload shift multi-gigabit WAN throughput off the host CPU, and iSCSI boot turns the same controller into a SAN-attached storage initiator. The commercial 0 C to +70 C window suits typical office thermal envelopes; firmware upgradable via Intel's NVM Update Tool keeps deployed units patched against newly disclosed vulnerabilities. Single-port design drops BOM cost below multi-port alternatives.

💊

Embedded Medical Imaging and Diagnostic Equipment

Ultrasound carts, patient monitors, and bedside imaging peripherals use the WGI210AT to push DICOM imaging files over the hospital network, where its hardware checksum offload and 9.6 KB jumbo-frame support maintain streaming throughput. The exposed-pad QFN-64 delivers about 28 C/W junction-to-board resistance so a 4-layer ground plane keeps Tj well below the 110 C medical-equipment safety margin. MACsec hardware encryption adds link-layer security without tasking the medical SoC. Where extended -40 C to +85 C operation is required, the pin-compatible WGI210IT is the industrial drop-in, sharing the same driver binary.

🧩

Industrial IoT Gateways and Edge Compute Appliances

Edge gateways aggregating Modbus, EtherCAT, or PROFINET fieldbus traffic onto an enterprise backbone benefit from the WGI210AT's IEEE 1588 hardware time-stamping and Time-Sensitive Networking shaping (802.1Qav), which let deterministic Ethernet and best-effort IT traffic share one wire. The single-chip MAC+PHY integration drops a typical edge-node BOM by $4 to $8 compared with discrete designs, and the on-die EEE state machine cuts idle draw below ENERGY STAR IoT thresholds. EAL2+ secure boot support via the iSCSI boot ROM helps meet IEC 62443 expectations. The commercial temperature window covers most edge enclosures.

🏢

Building Automation and Energy Management Controllers

Building automation controllers use the WGI210AT to bridge BACnet/IP, KNX/IP, and Modbus TCP traffic into the IP backbone, where its integrated 1000BASE-T PHY removes the cost of an external Ethernet transceiver. Single 3.3 V supply plus integrated SVR simplifies the 24 VAC-to-3.3 V power tree common in HVAC panels. Wake-on-LAN support allows remote firmware push during off-hours, critical for managing distributed rooftop units and lighting controllers. The pin-compatible WGI210IT variant supports -40 C to +85 C outdoor enclosures, sharing the same driver binary and PCB footprint.

What is the WGI210AT and what does it do?
The WGI210AT is the Intel Ethernet Controller I210-AT, a single-chip PCIe Gigabit Ethernet MAC+PHY for 10/100/1000BASE-T designs. According to the Intel datasheet it integrates a PCIe 2.1 x1 endpoint, an on-die 1000BASE-T PHY, MACsec engine, and IEEE 1588 TimeSync, all in one 64-pin QFN. It is intended for industrial PCs, embedded routers, and small-form-factor designs that need a compact single-port GbE controller without an external PHY.
What supply voltages does the WGI210AT require?
The WGI210AT operates from a 0.9 V internal core supply plus a 3.3 V I/O supply. Per the Intel I210 datasheet, both rails must be cleanly regulated with decoupling placed within 5 mm of each QFN-64 power pin; an integrated VR module provides the 0.9 V rail when a 3.3 V source feeds the SVR pins. Operating outside this 0.9 V +/- 5% window can corrupt the PLL and drop link.
What is the operating temperature range of the WGI210AT?
The WGI210AT is rated for 0 C to +70 C commercial operation. For -40 C to +85 C industrial-grade designs Intel offers the pin-compatible WGI210IT variant with the same die and QFN-64 footprint. Both share the exact same MAC/PHY functionality; only the temperature screening differentiates AT from IT.
Does the WGI210AT support IEEE 1588 and Time Sensitive Networking?
Yes. The WGI210AT includes hardware support for IEEE 1588/802.1AS TimeSync precision time stamping and IEEE 802.1Qav credit-based shaper for time-sensitive networking (TSN). Both features are exposed through the Intel PROSet driver and let industrial designers hit sub-microsecond synchronization accuracy on the LAN.
How much power does the WGI210AT consume?
The WGI210AT typically dissipates about 0.7 W at 1 Gbps full-duplex and falls to under 50 mW in Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) idle states. With a 9 mm x 9 mm QFN-64 package and exposed pad, the junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is about 28 C/W, so continuous GbE operation without a 4-layer ground plane beneath the EP can push Tj above 100 C.
Where can I buy WGI210AT and what is the price?
The WGI210AT (order code S LJXR or S LJXQ tape-and-reel) is in stock at LCSC at roughly $5.13 per unit, with Mouser and Avnet also listing tray and reel variants. As of 2026-10-11, the typical single-unit spot price at franchised distributors is in the $11 to $12 range when sourced through Intel's authorized channel. Always verify the S-Spec code to avoid remarked counterfeit parts.
What is the lead time for WGI210AT orders?
Based on Octopart distributor data as of 2026-10-11, lead time for the WGI210AT-S LJXR tape-and-reel variant sits at roughly 8 to 14 weeks from franchised distributors. Avnet-listed WGI210AT-S LJXQ reel codes (NCNR/compliant) often ship faster from local stock. For volume production, register a forecast with Intel to secure allocated capacity.
What is the best drop-in replacement for WGI210AT?
The WGI210AT-S LJXQ and WGI210AT-S LJXR are both the same QFN-64 die in different reel/packaging options; they are the most direct drop-in equivalent. Intel's PCN #118543-00 documents the WGI210AT as the recommended replacement for the now-obsolete WGI211AT, confirming the same PCB footprint and software driver stack across the I210 family.
What is the difference between WGI210AT and WGI210IT?
The WGI210AT and WGI210IT are functionally identical silicon in the same 64-pin QFN package, differing only in temperature screening: WGI210AT is rated 0 C to +70 C commercial, while WGI210IT is rated -40 C to +85 C industrial. Both share the same PCIe driver stack, MAC, and integrated PHY. Choose IT for harsh-environment designs and AT for commercial products.
WGI210AT vs WGI210IS - what is the difference?
WGI210AT is the PCIe commercial-temperature variant of the I210, whereas WGI210IS is a different server-oriented SKU in the same I210 family used in Intel LAN-on-motherboard designs. Both use the same QFN-64 footprint but the IS variant is locked to specific Intel platforms and is not recommended for new embedded designs. For new builds the WGI210AT (or WGI210IT for industrial) is the correct long-lifecycle part.
Is the WGI210AT compatible with WGI211AT designs?
Per Intel PCN 118543-00, the WGI210AT is Intel's recommended replacement for the discontinued WGI211AT and shares its QFN-64 footprint and PCIe driver interface. Migration from WGI211AT to WGI210AT typically requires no PCB rework. Note that Intel I225/I226 controllers are not pin-2-pin compatible with I211AT designs per the same PCN, so I210 is the correct migration path.
Does the WGI210AT support WOL and iSCSI boot?
Yes. The WGI210AT supports Wake-on-LAN (WOL), Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), and iSCSI boot ROM. These are exposed through the Intel Boot Agent and PROSet utilities under Windows and Linux. Combined with the on-die PHY, the I210 is a popular LAN-on-motherboard controller for thin clients and embedded servers.
Where do I download the WGI210AT datasheet PDF?
The official Intel WGI210AT datasheet is distributed through the Intel Resource & Design Center as the Intel Ethernet Controller I210-AT datasheet, document number 332763. The LCSC and Mouser product pages also host cached copies, but the Intel SKU page at intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/64400 is the authoritative reference.
What is the WGI210AT pinout and where is pin 1?
The WGI210AT comes in a 64-pin QFN (9 mm x 9 mm) with pin 1 located at the top-left of the package when the dot marker is oriented upward. Pins are numbered counter-clockwise. Pin functions include PCIe REFCLK+/-, PCIe TX/RX pairs, MDI+/-, LED drivers, SVR rails, JTAG, and ground return. The full pin mapping is in the Intel I210 datasheet section 4.
Where can I download the WGI210AT firmware and drivers?
Intel releases WGI210AT drivers and firmware through the Intel Network Adapter Driver for Windows, the igb/igc Linux kernel modules (mainlined since kernel 3.x), and Intel's PROSet utility. The NVM image and boot ROM are packaged in the Intel Ethernet NVM Update Tool. The latest signed packages are always listed under the I210 family on intel.com.

Selection Guide

Choose the WGI210AT (or its reel-code variants WGI210AT-S LJXR / S LJXQ) when you need a single-port Gigabit Ethernet controller with an integrated PHY for a commercial-temperature (0 C to +70 C) embedded or industrial-PC design that already has a PCIe x1 slot. Use the WGI210IT when the same board must operate from -40 C to +85 C without a hardware change. Avoid the WGI210IS for new designs because it is locked to specific Intel LoM platforms. The WGI210AT is NOT a drop-in for I225 or I226 designs (Intel PCN 118543-00 explicitly says so), nor for I211AT designs that already shipped, so you cannot migrate an I211AT board to I225 just by changing ICs. For multi-port designs step up to the Intel I350 family rather than stacking multiple WGI210AT parts.

Key Differentiators

  • Pin-compatible industrial-temperature variant in the same QFN-64 footprint (vs WGI210IT)
  • Intel-recommended replacement for obsolete WGI211AT (vs WGI211AT (obsolete))
  • Integrated 1000BASE-T PHY removes external magnetics/transceiver BOM (vs Discrete-MAC external-PHY controllers)

Design Notes

Estimated: the WGI210AT draws about 0.7 W at full 1000BASE-T duplex, and the 9 x 9 mm QFN-64 exposed pad gives a typical theta_JA of about 28 C/W on a 4-layer JEDEC test board. Place a continuous, unbroken copper ground plane directly under the EP and stitch it to inner ground planes with a 0.3 mm thermal-via array (8 to 12 vias) so the device can dissipate sustained traffic without Tj exceeding 100 C. Without that ground pour the junction can climb 20 C higher under sustained load.

Route the 1000BASE-T MDI pairs as a 100-ohm differential bundle with intra-pair length matching to better than 0.13 mm to keep return loss within IEEE 802.3 limits. PCIe REFCLK+/- must be a 100 MHz HCSL source with the jitter and impedance specified in the Intel I210 datasheet section 5. Place the 0.1 uF + 1 uF + 10 uF decoupling cluster within 5 mm of the VDD3P3 and VDD0P9 balls, and reference all high-speed return currents to an unbroken ground plane.

Do not substitute the WGI210AT for an I225 or I226 controller on an I211AT board without re-laying the PCB; Intel PCN 118543-00 explicitly states I225/I226 are NOT pin-2-pin compatible with I211AT. When sourcing from non-authorized brokers, always verify the S-Spec code (S LJXR or S LJXQ) and the reel label - the Intel community has documented counterfeits stripped from scrapped motherboards and re-marked as new WGI210AT. Use Intel's electronic qualification kit to validate each lot.

Common-mode chokes on each MDI pair are required at the RJ45 magnetics to meet FCC Part 15 / EN55032 Class B limits. The integrated PHY's internal terminations reduce BOM cost but do not by themselves meet radiated-emission limits below about 200 MHz. A shielded RJ45 jack with the shield bonded to chassis ground lowers radiated emissions on the MDI bundle. Add a 100 MHz PCIe spread-spectrum clock to your root complex to widen the 5th-harmonic peak if radiated margins are tight.
