EPM7128STC100-6N Présentation
What is a CPLD? A Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) is a non-volatile programmable logic device that sits between simple PAL/GAL chips and FPGAs in the programmable logic hierarchy. CPLDs use EEPROM or flash configuration memory, provide deterministic timing with predictable propagation delays, and typically include on-chip non-volatile storage - making them ideal for glue logic, bus interfacing, and power-up configuration tasks. Within the taxonomy, EPM7128STC100-6N belongs to: CPLD > Complex Programmable Logic Device > Programmable Logic Device > Semiconductor IC.
Key features include 250 MHz internal counter frequency, IEEE 1149.1 JTAG boundary-scan support, in-system programmability (ISP) via JTAG, multi-volt core and I/O operation, and 5V-tolerant I/Os. The device is fabricated on a CMOS EEPROM process and supports Altera's Quartus and MAX+PLUS II development environments for schematic, VHDL, and Verilog HDL design entry.
The MAX 7000S architecture combines a Programmable Logic Array (PLA) with a Programmable Logic Device (PLD) macro-cell structure, providing each macro cell with a configurable register, product-term selection, and programmable I/O. This architecture yields fast, deterministic propagation delays and high logic density per I/O pin, suitable for high-speed glue-logic and state-machine applications.
Typical applications include address decoding for microprocessor and DSP systems, peripheral bus interface bridging (PCI, ISA, VME), state-machine control for industrial automation, bus arbitration and protocol conversion in telecommunications, and legacy system upgrade paths requiring 5V-tolerant logic. The 5V tolerant I/Os allow direct interface to legacy TTL logic without level shifters.
When designing with this part, verify power-supply decoupling: each VCC/VCCIO pin should have a 0.1 microfarad ceramic decoupling capacitor placed within 3 mm of the pin. Unused I/O pins should be configured as outputs driving ground to minimize power consumption.

Applications typiques
EPM7128STC100-6N convient pour 7 applications: Microprocessor Address Decoding, PCI/ISA/VME Bus Interface Bridging, Industrial Control State Machines, Legacy System Upgrades (5V TTL Replacement), Telecommunications Protocol Conversion, Test & Measurement Equipment Front-End Logic, Avionics & Military Legacy Interfaces.
Microprocessor Address Decoding
The EPM7128STC100-6N is ideal for address-decoding and chip-select generation in legacy 5V microprocessor and DSP systems. With 128 macro cells and 84 user I/Os, it can replace multiple 74LS/74FTTL decoder packages with a single in-system-programmable device, simplifying PCB layout. Its 6 ns propagation delay is well below typical 25-33 MHz memory-bus cycle times, providing comfortable timing margin for synchronous DRAM, Flash, and peripheral chip-select generation.
Recommandé
PCI/ISA/VME Bus Interface Bridging
The EPM7128STC100-6N serves as a bus-interface bridge between legacy 5V buses (PCI, ISA, VME) and modern peripherals, with 84 I/Os sufficient for full 32-bit data plus control/address signals. Its 5V-tolerant I/Os connect directly to TTL-level buses without level shifters, and the deterministic 6 ns pin-to-pin delay simplifies timing closure. The JTAG ISP interface enables in-field firmware updates for protocol-conversion logic.
Recommandé
Industrial Control State Machines
Factory automation systems benefit from the EPM7128STC100-6N's deterministic timing and EEPROM non-volatile configuration, which provides instant-on behavior without external boot memory. Each macro cell's product-term logic efficiently encodes Moore and Mealy state machines for motor-control sequencing, sensor debouncing, and safety-interlock logic. The wide 0C to +70C commercial operating range suits most factory-floor enclosures.
Recommandé
Legacy System Upgrades (5V TTL Replacement)
Engineers maintaining 1980s-1990s test equipment, instrumentation, and industrial controllers use the EPM7128STC100-6N as a modern, in-system-programmable replacement for racks of 74LS/74AS/74F glue-logic ICs. A single CPLD can absorb 5-10 discrete decoder, latch, and multiplexer packages, reducing board area and BOM cost. The 5V VCCIO allows direct solder-in replacement of legacy logic without PCB rework.
Recommandé
Telecommunications Protocol Conversion
Telecom line cards and base-station controllers use the EPM7128STC100-6N for protocol conversion between legacy E1/T1 framing, HDLC channels, and proprietary backplane buses. The 84 I/Os handle multiple full-duplex serial channels plus parallel control/status registers, and the 6 ns tPD supports bit-rate conversion up to 80 Mbps. JTAG ISP simplifies factory provisioning and field firmware upgrades.
Recommandé
Test & Measurement Equipment Front-End Logic
Bench-top oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators use the EPM7128STC100-6N for trigger logic, channel multiplexing, and front-panel I/O scanning. The 5V-tolerant I/Os interface directly with legacy analog front-end ICs, and the deterministic 4.5 ns pin-to-pin delay ensures clean trigger-event timing. The in-system programmability enables last-minute feature additions without board respins.
Recommandé
Avionics & Military Legacy Interfaces
Although the commercial-grade EPM7128STC100-6N operates only to 70C, the same MAX 7000S die is available in industrial and military temperature grades (EPM7128STI100-6N, EPM7128STC100-6) for avionics retrofit programs. The 5V-tolerant I/Os interface directly with MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC 429 transceivers without level translation, simplifying legacy airframe upgrades.

Notes de conception
Estimated: at maximum toggle rate the EPM7128STC100-6N ICC is approximately 300-500 mA from VCC (5V). Place one 0.1 microfarad X7R ceramic decoupling capacitor within 3 mm of each VCC/VCCIO pin, and add a single 10 microfarad tantalum or aluminum-polymer bulk capacitor near the package. ICC rises sharply above 50 MHz internal frequency; use a star-ground topology to keep digital switching noise out of analog supply sections.
The TQFP-100 package has a 0.5 mm pitch and requires careful PCB layout. Use 0.15 mm/0.20 mm trace width with matched length pairs for high-speed signals, and provide a solid ground plane on the layer immediately beneath the CPLD. JTAG signals (TCK, TMS, TDI, TDO) should be routed with 4-8 mil traces and series 33 ohm terminators if the JTAG cable exceeds 150 mm length.
Do NOT connect EPM7128STC100-6N I/O pins directly to a 3.3V-only bus while VCCIO is at 5V - this violates the absolute-maximum VCCIO+0.3V clamp. For mixed-voltage designs, set VCCIO to 3.3V; the I/Os remain 5V-tolerant per the datasheet. Unused I/O pins MUST be configured as outputs driving ground via Quartus device-options to minimize quiescent current.
When using the EPM7128STC100-6N for high-speed bus multiplexing above 50 MHz, add 22-33 ohm series damping resistors on each output to control overshoot and ringing. The CMOS output structure has roughly 5-7 ns edge rates which can excite resonances on unterminated traces longer than 50 mm. Quartus II pin-assignment tools should reserve output-pins adjacent to high-edge-rate signals for ground or unused-output configurations.
