Typical Applications
IR21271STRPBF is suitable for 7 applications: Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor Drive, Solenoid and Valve Driver, Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Primary Switch, HVAC Blower and Fan Control, Industrial 24 V Half-Bridge Actuator, Power MOSFET Driver for Synchronous Rectifiers, LED Lighting Ballast and Driver.
Brushless DC (BLDC) Motor Drive
The IR21271STRPBF is well suited for low-side leg driving in BLDC motor inverters used in industrial fans, pumps, and small appliances. Its 600 V high-side rating exceeds typical 310 V bus rails with substantial margin, while the integrated CS comparator eliminates the external current-sense amplifier normally required for cycle-by-cycle current limiting. With 250 mA source and 500 mA sink capability, the driver comfortably switches 600 V-class IGBTs at frequencies up to 20 kHz; at 15 kHz with a 100 nC gate-charge device, switching losses stay below 1.5 W per phase. Designers place a 1 ohm shunt in the low-side source return and route the CS trace directly to pin 3 to minimize noise pickup.
Recommended
Solenoid and Valve Driver
Industrial solenoid drivers for pneumatic valves and hydraulic actuators benefit from the IR21271STRPBF's integrated current-sense shutdown. The CS comparator monitors the solenoid current through a sense resistor, and when the trip threshold is exceeded, the SD output latches off the gate drive, protecting the coil from thermal overload. The 600 V tolerance is overkill for 24 V solenoids but provides exceptional transient protection for inductive kickback. Operating at 1-5 kHz PWM for proportional control, the driver maintains low switching losses. Place a flyback diode across the solenoid and decouple VCC with at least 10 uF ceramic close to pin 1.
Recommended
Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) Primary Switch
In isolated SMPS topologies such as flyback and forward converters, the IR21271STRPBF can drive the primary-side high-voltage MOSFET directly from the rectified bulk rail. The 600 V offset rating covers 400 V rectified mains with comfortable margin, while the integrated CS input serves as primary-side current-mode control feedback, replacing a dedicated current-sense comparator. With 200 ns propagation delay, the control loop remains stable at switching frequencies up to 250 kHz when paired with modern digital controllers. Place the current-sense transformer secondary directly at the CS pin with a 100 ohm damping resistor to suppress ringing.
Recommended
HVAC Blower and Fan Control
HVAC variable-speed blower motors and large fan drives benefit from the IR21271STRPBF's integrated protection and high-voltage tolerance. Operating from 24 V bus and switching 400 V three-phase inverter legs, the driver provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting via the CS pin, which is critical for stall-detection and rapid overcurrent shutdown in fan-bearing fault scenarios. The dV/dt immunity is rated to handle the fast switching edges of 600 V IGBT modules without false triggering. With 250 mA source current and the bootstrap supply, the part sustains 15 kHz switching continuously without thermal concern in typical blower applications.
Recommended
Industrial 24 V Half-Bridge Actuator
Low-voltage half-bridge actuators in industrial automation, such as bi-directional valve positioners and DC motor reversers, use the IR21271STRPBF in low-side configuration to drive the low-side N-channel MOSFET. The 600 V rating provides enormous transient headroom for 24 V systems, while the integrated CS comparator detects stall or short-circuit conditions and shuts down the output within microseconds. At 5-10 kHz PWM frequency, the 200 ns propagation delay contributes less than 1% duty-cycle error, making closed-loop position control accurate. A 100 nF bypass capacitor on VCC near pin 1 is essential.
Recommended
Power MOSFET Driver for Synchronous Rectifiers
The IR21271STRPBF can drive the secondary-side synchronous rectifier MOSFET in isolated DC-DC converters, where the 600 V tolerance and CS-based current sensing enable primary-side control of secondary-side switching. With 500 mA sink capability, the driver turns off 100 V MOSFETs with Qg under 50 nC in well under 50 ns, minimizing dead-time losses in LLC and phase-shift topologies. The integrated CS comparator detects reverse current in the synchronous rectifier and disables the gate to prevent conduction reversal. Decoupling the bootstrap capacitor with a 1 uF ceramic near pin 8 is mandatory for high-frequency operation above 100 kHz.
Recommended
LED Lighting Ballast and Driver
High-power LED drivers in commercial and industrial lighting use the IR21271STRPBF to switch the high-voltage PFC stage MOSFET. The 600 V rating handles 480 V rectified mains, while the CS input monitors inductor current for critical-conduction-mode (CrCM) PFC control. With propagation delay of 200 ns and rise/fall times below 100 ns at the gate output, the driver enables zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) operation at 100-300 kHz, reducing EMI in dimmable commercial luminaires. A 10 kOhm resistor from CS to VCC sets the trip threshold, with a 1 nF capacitor filtering high-frequency noise from the sense trace.

Design Notes
Bootstrap capacitor selection is critical for the high-side rail of the IR21271STRPBF. Choose a 1 uF to 10 uF ceramic or low-ESR tantalum capacitor from VB (pin 8) to VS (pin 6), with voltage rating at least 25 V to handle VCC transients. The capacitor must recharge each low-side cycle through the bootstrap diode; insufficient capacitance causes high-side UVLO and duty-cycle distortion. Estimated: for a 100 kHz, 50 nC gate charge load, a 1 uF cap holds ~10% droop per cycle; at 20 kHz the same cap holds under 2%.
Route the CS-pin trace directly from the current-sense resistor to pin 3 with a 100 ohm damping resistor and 1 nF filter capacitor placed within 5 mm of the IC. Keep the LO output trace short (under 25 mm) and the COM return path wide (at least 0.5 mm) to minimize ground bounce that could false-trigger the CS comparator. Place VCC decoupling (10 uF + 100 nF parallel) within 3 mm of pin 1. Per Infineon application note, the exposed copper area under the SOIC should be at least 100 mm^2 for thermal dissipation.
Do not exceed VCC of 20 V or operate below 9 V; below 9 V the internal UVLO disables both outputs and the CS comparator may produce false triggers. The CS input voltage must remain below 0.5 V in normal operation - higher voltages indicate a fault condition that triggers shutdown. Negative transients on the VS pin must be clamped with a TVS diode or Schottky to COM, as the datasheet rates the part for transient tolerance but not continuous negative voltage. Lastly, the LIN/SD pin is bidirectional in the IR21271 - applying a logic high shuts down both HO and LO outputs, which is a feature unique to this part.
