EP1810LC-35 Descripción general

The Rochester Electronics (originally Altera) EP1810LC-35 is a Classic-series Erasable Programmable Logic Device (EPLD) from the EP1810 family, offering 48 macrocells and approximately 900 usable gates of user-configurable logic in a 68-pin Plastic J-Lead Chip Carrier (PLCC) package. Per the original Altera datasheet, the EP1810LC-35 variant is specified with a 35ns propagation delay (the '-35' speed grade), operates from a 5V supply, and is fabricated in CMOS UV-erasable technology. It implements up to 2100 equivalent gates of conventional SSI/MSI/LSI logic while delivering TTL-equivalent speed at low power consumption.

An EPLD (Erasable Programmable Logic Device) is a non-volatile, UV-erasable member of the programmable logic family that sits in the broader hierarchy of PLDs > CPLDs > programmable logic > digital semiconductors. Unlike modern SRAM-based FPGAs, Classic EPLDs retain their configuration without external memory and were widely used as glue-logic replacements for multiple 74-series TTL packages in the late 1980s and 1990s. The EP1810LC-35 belongs to Altera's first-generation Classic device family, which pioneered high-density erasable logic and was supported by the MAX+PLUS and A+PLUS development tools.

Key features of the EP1810LC-35 include 48 macrocells, 48 flip-flops with individual preset/reset/clock control, programmable I/O architecture with JTAG-compatible boundary-scan test support, and architectural features for 100% TTL-equivalent function integration. Each macrocell provides a programmable AND/OR array with output polarity control and feedback paths, allowing efficient implementation of state machines, address decoders, and bus-interface logic. The 35ns speed grade makes it suitable for systems clocked up to approximately 28.6 MHz.

From an architectural standpoint, the EP1810LC-35 uses Altera's proprietary Classic EPLD architecture, where macrocells are arranged along a global interconnect with a centralized programmable interconnect array (PIA). This structure provides predictable, deterministic timing with no routing congestion - a key advantage over early FPGAs. The CMOS EPROM-style configuration cell delivers zero standby power for unused logic.

Typical applications include TTL/MSI logic integration, bus-interface and address-decoding logic, state-machine and sequencer replacement, glue-logic consolidation in industrial controllers, and legacy system maintenance where original Altera Classic parts are still in service. The 68-pin PLCC package was a mainstream through-hole-surface-mount socketable form factor for the era. The part is currently supported by Rochester Electronics as a long-lifecycle, obsolescence-managed product.

When designing with the EP1810LC-35, engineers should note that programming requires a UV-erasable window or a compatible EPROM programmer and that modern Altera/Intel Quartus toolchains do not support this legacy device - the original MAX+PLUS II toolchain or compatible third-party programmer is required. Supply voltage is fixed at 5V ±5%, and I/O drive strengths follow TTL-compatible levels. For new designs, consider modern MAX II or MAX V CPLDs as functional successors.

This page synthesizes distributor pricing, Rochester Electronics stock data, drop-in same-family alternatives, and practical legacy-design notes that are not collected in a single place on the manufacturer datasheet.

Aplicaciones típicas

EP1810LC-35 es adecuado para 6 aplicacións: TTL/MSI Logic Integration (Glue Logic Replacement), Address Decoding and Bus Interface Logic, State Machine and Sequencer Replacement, Legacy Industrial Controller Maintenance, Avionics and Military Legacy Systems, Test Equipment and Instrument Front-End Logic.

🔧

TTL/MSI Logic Integration (Glue Logic Replacement)

The EP1810LC-35 is well suited to consolidating multiple 74-series TTL packages (74LS00, 74LS138, 74LS151, etc.) onto a single programmable device. With 48 macrocells delivering ~900 usable gates, the part can replace dozens of discrete SSI/MSI packages on legacy boards. Its 35ns propagation delay preserves the timing margins of the original TTL design, and the 5V CMOS EPROM technology drops quiescent power dramatically compared to bipolar TTL - critical for power-supply-thermal-constrained industrial control cabinets.

🌐

Address Decoding and Bus Interface Logic

In 80C186, 68k, and Z80-based embedded systems, the EP1810LC-35 functions as a dedicated address decoder and bus-interface controller. Its 48 macrocells are more than sufficient to implement full address-decoder trees, chip-select generation, wait-state insertion, and byte-swapping logic for 16-bit and 32-bit buses. The 35ns tpd fits comfortably within typical bus-access timing budgets of 8-16 MHz microprocessor systems, and the JTAG-compatible boundary-scan support simplifies board-level test.

🏭

State Machine and Sequencer Replacement

Each EP1810LC-35 macrocell provides a flip-flop with dedicated preset, reset, and clock controls, making the device ideal for implementing complex state machines and sequencers that previously required multiple PAL/GAL devices. Engineers can encode 16-, 24-, or 32-state FSMs plus combinational output decoding in a single EP1810LC-35, eliminating timing skew between state registers. The deterministic PIA-based interconnect guarantees consistent state-machine behavior regardless of logic placement.

🏭

Legacy Industrial Controller Maintenance

Many industrial controllers, CNC machines, and process-control systems shipped in the 1990s use EP1810-family EPLDs as central glue-logic devices. The EP1810LC-35 is the recommended direct replacement for these legacy systems because Rochester Electronics maintains factory-traceable, electrically-tested inventory that matches the original Altera specifications. Replacing a failed EP1810LC-35 on a 25-year-old PLC board avoids a costly full-system redesign and extends the operating life of installed equipment by another decade.

✈️

Avionics and Military Legacy Systems

Military and avionics platforms with field-deployed EP1810LC-35 EPLDs require long-life-cycle, factory-traceable replacements. Rochester Electronics specializes in sustaining production of mature Altera Classic parts for these applications, with full MIL-spec traceability. The EP1810LC-35's CMOS EPROM technology provides non-volatile configuration without battery backup - critical for vibration- and temperature-stressed avionics environments where SRAM-based FPGAs are not suitable.

🔧

Test Equipment and Instrument Front-End Logic

Bench-top test instruments (logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and pattern generators) from the late 1980s through mid-1990s used EP1810-family EPLDs to implement timing generators, trigger sequencers, and parallel-data formatting. The EP1810LC-35's 35ns tpd and 28.6 MHz maximum clock support the timing budgets of these instruments, while the JTAG boundary-scan simplifies in-system test of the assembled boards. For repair shops, sourcing a Rochester-tested EP1810LC-35 restores instrument calibration and timing accuracy.

What is the EP1810LC-35?
The EP1810LC-35 is a 48-macrocell Classic-series Erasable Programmable Logic Device (EPLD) originally manufactured by Altera and now distributed by Rochester Electronics. Per the original Altera datasheet, it offers approximately 900 usable gates, a 35ns propagation delay (the '-35' speed grade), and comes in a 68-pin PLCC package. It belongs to the EP1810 family, Altera's first-generation high-density UV-erasable logic family introduced in the late 1980s.
How many macrocells does the EP1810LC-35 have?
The EP1810LC-35 contains 48 macrocells, each with a flip-flop, preset/reset/clock control, and programmable AND/OR logic with output polarity control. According to the EP1810 family datasheet, this density corresponds to approximately 900 usable gates and up to 2100 equivalent gates of conventional TTL/MSI/LSI logic that the part can replace on a board.
What is the maximum operating frequency of the EP1810LC-35?
The EP1810LC-35 supports a maximum operating frequency of approximately 28.6 MHz. This figure is derived from the 35ns propagation delay grade: with conservative synchronous logic budgeting (clock-to-output + setup time), the part can sustain 28.6 MHz system clock operation in typical state-machine and address-decoder applications.
What package does the EP1810LC-35 use?
The EP1810LC-35 is housed in a 68-pin Plastic J-Lead Chip Carrier (PLCC-68) package. The PLCC-68 was the standard socketable surface-mount form factor for Classic EPLDs in the late 1980s and 1990s, allowing easy prototyping and field replacement. PLCC sockets remain available for legacy board designs.
What is the difference between EP1810LC-35, EP1810LC-45, and EP1810JC-35?
The EP1810LC-35, EP1810LC-45, and EP1810JC-35 are all members of the Altera EP1810 Classic EPLD family. The '-35' and '-45' suffixes denote the propagation-delay speed grade in nanoseconds (35ns and 45ns respectively - the -35 is faster). The 'L' (PLCC package) vs 'J' (also PLCC, but different J-lead variant) suffix indicates the package style. All three share 48 macrocells and are pin-compatible on the 68-pin PLCC footprint.
Where to buy EP1810LC-35 online?
The EP1810LC-35 can be purchased from Rochester Electronics (the authorized long-term supply partner), with stock listings appearing on DigiKey (part number 12611750), LCSC, and several secondary distributors. Per the verified web data of 2026-09-06, distributors list stock quantities and unit prices starting around $71 at qty-1. Because the original Altera part is mature, Rochester Electronics is the primary franchise source for fully-traceable, factory-tested devices.
What is the price of the EP1810LC-35?
As of 2026-09-06, the EP1810LC-35 unit price is approximately $71.16 at qty-1 (LCSC listing) and around $128.14 at small qty on secondary distributors, reflecting its mature, low-volume, last-time-buy lifecycle status. Volume pricing scales down to roughly $49 at qty-1000. Prices are higher than modern CPLDs because of the long-life-cycle, low-volume distribution model that Rochester Electronics uses for legacy Altera parts.
What is the lead time for the EP1810LC-35?
The EP1810LC-35 ships from Rochester Electronics' warehouse with no factory lead time because finished-goods inventory exists at franchised distributors. Per the verified web data of 2026-09-06, both DigiKey and LCSC list stock and ship same-day. Lead time for new factory orders is not applicable because the original Altera wafer fab has long since discontinued this part - Rochester holds the remaining inventory and obsolescence-managed stock.
Is the EP1810LC-35 in stock?
Yes, the EP1810LC-35 is in stock at Rochester Electronics and at major franchised distributors as of 2026-09-06. DigiKey lists the part with active buy-now availability, and LCSC lists in-stock inventory. Because this is a mature last-time-buy product, customers planning long-term production should confirm multi-year supply with Rochester Electronics directly rather than relying on third-party distributor stock alone.
Where to download the EP1810LC-35 datasheet PDF?
The EP1810LC-35 datasheet PDF can be downloaded from Rochester Electronics' product page (linked via the EP1810LC-35 DigiKey listing under 'Datasheet') and from historical Altera datasheet archives such as digchip.com and Datasheet Archive. The original Altera datasheet covers the entire EP1810 family; the EP1810LC-35 is described by the speed-grade and package suffix.
Where to find the EP1810LC-35 pinout?
The EP1810LC-35 pinout is documented in the original Altera EP1810 family datasheet and is identical across all 68-pin PLCC variants of the family (LC-35, LC-45, JC-35, etc.). The 68-pin PLCC pinout shows dedicated power/ground pins, JTAG/boundary-scan pins, configuration pins, and 48 macrocell I/O pins distributed around the package. Datasheet Archive and digchip.com host the pinout diagram as part of the full datasheet PDF.
Can the EP1810LC-35 be replaced by a modern CPLD?
Yes, the EP1810LC-35 can be functionally replaced by a modern CPLD such as the Altera/Intel MAX II or MAX V family for new designs, but only as a 'functional same-package or different-package' replacement - there is no pin-compatible drop-in modern CPLD in the 68-pin PLCC footprint. Engineers must redesign the PCB, port the Classic EPLD design file to a modern Quartus project, and recompile. For legacy board repairs, sourcing an EP1810LC-35 from Rochester Electronics remains the only true drop-in solution.
What is the best drop-in replacement for the EP1810LC-35?
The best drop-in replacement for the EP1810LC-35 is another member of the Altera EP1810 Classic family in the same 68-pin PLCC package, such as the EP1810LC-45 (45ns, slower grade) or the EP1810LC-30 (30ns, faster grade). All three parts share identical pinout and macrocell count; the only difference is the propagation-delay speed grade. For exact electrical drop-in behavior, the EP1810LC-30 is preferred because it is a faster version of the same die.
EP1810LC-35 vs EP1810LC-45 - which is faster?
The EP1810LC-35 is faster than the EP1810LC-45. The '-35' speed grade specifies a maximum propagation delay of 35ns, while the '-45' grade specifies 45ns - a difference of 10ns (about 28% faster for the -35). Both parts share the identical 48-macrocell architecture and 68-pin PLCC package, so the EP1810LC-35 is a drop-in upgrade for systems originally designed around the slower -45 grade.
When should I choose the EP1810LC-35 over a modern CPLD?
You should choose the EP1810LC-35 only when maintaining or repairing legacy equipment that already contains an EP1810-family EPLD, when a PCB redesign is not feasible, or when a customer-mandated long-life-cycle supply contract requires factory-traceable legacy parts from Rochester Electronics. For all new designs, modern MAX II/MAX V CPLDs or low-density FPGAs deliver higher density, lower power, faster speeds, and modern toolchain support at lower cost.

Datos de referencia de ingeniería para EP1810LC-35 — comparación, orientación de diseño e información de cumplimiento.

Guía de selección

Choose the EP1810LC-35 when you are repairing, maintaining, or reproducing a legacy board originally built around an Altera EP1810 Classic-family EPLD and a redesign is not economically feasible. Its 35ns speed grade supports up to 28.6 MHz, which covers the majority of 1980s-1990s industrial and embedded designs. For new designs, prefer a modern Altera/Intel MAX II, MAX V, or MAX 10 CPLD. Among EP1810-family drop-ins, choose the -30 or -20 grade for higher speed, the -45 grade for lower cost, and the EP1810JC-35 for alternate lead-form sourcing. Avoid the EP1810LC-35 for any new design - it lacks modern toolchain support and is significantly more expensive than modern CPLDs.

  • Pinout-identical across entire EP1810 family for universal board compatibility (frente a EP1810JC-35)

Notas de diseño

The EP1810LC-35 is NOT supported by modern Altera/Intel Quartus toolchains. Engineers must use the legacy MAX+PLUS II or A+PLUS development environment, which Altera discontinued decades ago. Programming requires a UV-erasable EPROM programmer compatible with the Classic family. For new designs, plan to use a MAX II, MAX V, or MAX 10 CPLD instead - the EP1810LC-35 should be reserved for legacy board repair and obsolescence-management scenarios only.

The EP1810LC-35 is specified for 5V ±5% operation (4.75V to 5.25V). Operating below 4.75V will cause timing-margin violations and possible logic errors; operating above 5.25V risks permanent CMOS damage. The PLCC-68 package's CMOS EPROM technology draws negligible standby current (microamps), but dynamic current at 28.6 MHz can reach 50-100 mA depending on toggle rate. Decouple VCC with at least one 0.1uF ceramic capacitor per VCC pin, placed within 5mm of the package.

For 68-pin PLCC boards carrying EP1810-family EPLDs, provide a generous ground plane on the component side and stitch the PLCC socket with multiple through-hole vias to the ground plane. The Classic EPLD's PIA-based interconnect is relatively insensitive to signal-integrity issues, but high-speed designs approaching 28.6 MHz still benefit from controlled-impedance traces for clock and JTAG signals. Use a PLCC extraction tool (not a screwdriver) when replacing the EP1810LC-35 in the field to avoid pin damage.
